Extractions: A Blind Net A Philosophy Of Blindness At first glance it might seem strange to have a section about a philosophy of blindness, however I think it is an extremely important topic to cover. The reason is simple, how you view blindness will determine your reaction to being blind or to those of us who are blind. There are as many ":philosophies" of blindness as there are people so obviously I won't be trying to cover EVERY point here. What I want to do is present you with some ideas about what blindness is, a positive outlook if you will, and thereby let you know what blindness DOES NOT NEED TO BE. Whether we think about it or not we all have a philosophy of blindness. It determines how we treat blind people and how we think about ourselves if we are or become blind. Of course one question to answer is who is blind ? Then there's the ":sensitive": question of what do you call someone who is blind ? My short answer would be blind, but God help us some people are offended by that "nasty five letter word." So here are some discussions about different aspects of blindness, incidents that have happened to blind people and the affects of different philosophies of blindness.

The presence of direct sunlight or artificial light may produce some discrepancy in the results because of some alteration in the appearance of shades of colour. This electronic version may also produce some discrepancies as the images have been optimised for web-based delivery and with a monitor resolution of 800x600 and 256 colour display or greater. The results of this test are not to be considered a valid medical test for colour blindness and merely serve to illustrate the tests available. If you have any queries about your own possible colour vision deficiencies consult your local GP. Position yourself about 75cm from your monitor so that the colour test image you are looking at is at eye level, read the description of the image and see what you can see!!

Extractions: Color Blindness Problem Set This problem set is based on a question received from a woman named Audrei. Audrei is red-green color blind and so are other members of her family. She wanted to know if we could help her understand how she inherited her color blindness. Audrei's family There are 7 children in Audrei's family, three girls and four boys. Two of the girls, Audrei and Liz, are red-green color blind. Caroline has normal color vision. Only two of the boys have been tested. Paul is color blind and David has normal color perception. Andrew and Jason, who have not been tested, may or may not have normal color perception. Barbara, the mother of the seven children, has normal color vision, but Sidney, the father, has the red-green color perception defect. Audrei also has a half brother Stephan. Audrei and Stephen have the same mother, but a different father. Stephan is also red green color blind. Red-green color blindness Red-green color blindness is an X-linked, recessive trait. Extractions: Color Blindness Although defective color vision may be acquired as a result of another eye disorder, the vast majority of color blind cases are hereditary - present at birth. Color blindness is rooted in the chromosomal differences between males and females. Females may be carriers of color blindness, but males are more commonly affected. About 8 percent of males and 0.5 percent of females are color deficient. Color blindness is a malfunction of the retina, which converts light energy into electircal energy that is then transmitted to the brain. This conversion is accomplished by two types of photoreceptor cells in the retina: rods and cones. The cones are responsible for encoding color. Each cone contains structures or visual pigments sensitive to one of three wavelengths of light: red, green, and blue. Normal persons are able to match all colors of the spectrum by mixtures of only three fundamental color sensitivities. Hence, the huge variety of colors we perceive stems from the cone cells' response to different compositions of wavelengths of light. Defects in color vision occur when one of the three cone cell color coding structures fails to function properly. One of the visual pigments may be present and functioning abnormally, or it may be absent altogether.

Repeated occurrences scar the upper eyelid, eventually turning it inward. The eyelashes then scratch the cornea, leading to blindness. It is a gradual yet painful condition affecting the poorest of the poor. Though it has blinded about six million people worldwide, trachoma can now be controlled with a strategy called SAFE that combines treatment with prevention. The International Trachoma Initiative is dedicated to eliminating blinding trachoma by the year 2020.
