A Case Study - the Passenger Pigeon The Passenger Pigeon, once probably the most numerous bird on the planet, made its home in the billion or so acres of primary forest that once covered North America east of the Rocky Mountains. Their flocks, a mile wide and up to 300 miles long, were so dense that they darkened the sky for hours and days as the flock passed overhead. Population estimates from the 19th century ranged from 1 billion to close to 4 billion individuals. Total populations may have reached 5 billion individuals and comprised up to 40% of the total number of birds in North America. No one in the late 1800's could have ever imagined that these birds would no longer be with us! The immense roosting and nesting colonies invited over-hunting. Tens of thousands of individuals were harvested daily from nesting colonies, and shipped to markets in the east to make pigeon pie. Modern technology hastened the demise of the Passenger Pigeon. With the coming of the telegraph, the locations of flocks could be ascertained, and the birds were rentlessly pursued. To add insult to injury, continous clearing of the forests on which these birds depended limited the nesting habitat that they could use.

Extractions: Nesting colonies of the endangered least tern and threatened piping plover are documented and monitored to determine reproductive success and to delineate essential nesting habitat. Data is used to identify management practices necessary for restoration of the two species. River sandbars have been cleared of vegetation to provide suitable nesting habitat. Nesting colonies susceptible to human disturbance are posted with signs to prevent intrusions. Wintering bald eagle concentrations and whooping crane migration stopover sites are being documented and monitored so that threatened, essential habitat can be protected. Research on the swift fox, blow-out penstemon least tern and mountain plover , conducted by universities under contract with the Game and Parks Commission, has identified factors limiting the survival of species, and has helped determine how the species can be restored or how further population declines can be prevented. The endangered blow-out penstemon is now being propagated in University of Nebraska greenhouses and successfully transplanted to suitable habitat in the Nebraska Sandhills.

Extractions: Official Status: Endangered Endangered species are species that are in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of their range. It is unlawful to kill, harm, or harass endangered species. Listed: 35 Federal Register 8495; June 2, 1970 Historical Status: The historical breeding range of the whooping crane extended from Illinois, northwest through North Dakota, and up to the Northwest Territories. The last nesting record for North Dakota was in McHenry County in 1915. The birds historically wintered along the Gulf of Mexico. By the 1940's there were an estimated 21 whooping cranes left in the world. Most were from a flock that wintered at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the coast of Texas. It was later discovered that the birds were breeding in Wood Buffalo National Park in the Northwest Territories. Present Status: There are presently about 145 whooping cranes in the wild. About 132 birds are in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and 13 birds are in a flock that migrates between Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Idaho and Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. The Aransas-Wood Buffalo population migrates through North Dakota. During the 1991 fall migration there were 8 sightings in North Dakota from late September to mid October. The spring migration occurs from late April to mid June. Birds can show up in all parts of North Dakota although most sightings occur in the western 2/3 of the state.
