Extractions: The responsibilities of the group include research, monitoring and provision of advice on terrestrial species and their habitats in relation to the international obligations placed upon Denmark under the EEC Habitats Directive, the EEC Birds Directive, the Ramsar Convention and the Waterfowl Agreement under the Bonn Convention. Waterbirds are in addition also monitored in marine areas. The Biodiversity Group is facilitator of the Topic Center for Biodiversity and Terrestrial Nature Data (in Danish). The Topic Center compiles and publishes data about species and their habitats in a co-operative effort with the NERI departments for Landscape Ecology and Terrestrial Ecology . The Topic Center is under development and will particularly work in relation to the NOVANA monitoring programme, which from 2004 will replace NOVA

Through wildness we come to understand the marvelous complexity, mystery, diversity, beauty, and stability of the full world in which we live. To that end, to restore the evolutionary process, our foundation places its highest priority on saving wild Nature. "The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness." John Muir The surest way to preserve wildness is to protect wilderness. Though the traditional North American models of parks and wilderness areas may not work equally well in all parts of the world, the growing discipline of conservation biology has clearly shown that only large wild areas free of roads and other industrial intrusions wilderness will sustain the full range of biological diversity, the full spectrum of wildness. FDE supports efforts to preserve and restore wilderness throughout the Americas, with the aim of returning these lands to a condition dominated by wildness.

' As the psalmists so eloquently sang, God's glory is to be found in the whole of the vast order of the universe and in the miraculous detail of nature in all its forms', said the Archbishop of Canterbury in July 1997. Out of the 5 to 15 million species of living organisms which live on earth only 1.75 million have been identified. Many will be small and not yet described by specialists, but provide essential food or support for more familiar forms of life. Humans and other animals, plants, fungi and micro-organisms depend on each other. It is estimated that between 1% and 10% of the world's species could become extinct in the next 25 years, mostly as a result of human activities. This rate of extinction is 50 to 100 times the average expected natural rate of extinction and in some areas may rise to 1,000 to 10,000 times that rate due to habitat loss. Overleaf are a few examples of bio-diversity loss, some reflections on why this matters to Christians and what each of us can do to help.
