Buddhism was probably introduced in the 2nd century although traditionally its introduction is credited to the first visit of Guru Rinpoche in the 8th century. Guru Rinpoche is the most important figure in Bhutan's history, regarded as the second Buddha. His miraculous powers included the ability to subdue demons and evil spirits, and he preserved his teachings and wisdom by concealing them in the form of terma (hidden treasures) to be found later by enlightened treasure discoverers known as tertons. One of the best known of these tertons was Pema Lingpa; the texts and artefacts he found, the religious dances he composed, and the art he produced, are vital parts of Bhutan's living heritage. Before the 16th century, numerous clans and noble families ruled in different valleys throughout Bhutan, quarelling among themselves and with Tibet. This changed in 1616 with the arrival of Ngawang Namgyal, a monk of the Drukpa Kagyu school of Buddhism from Tibet. He taught throughout the region and soon established himself as the religious ruler of Bhutan with the title Shabdrung Rinpoche. He repelled attacks from rival lamas and Tibetan forces and transformed the southern valleys into a unified country called Druk Yul (Land of the Dragon). While the political system he established lasted until the beginning of the 20th century, the announcement of the Shabdrung's death in 1705 was followed by 200 years of internal conflict and political infighting.

It can be gleaned from available records that the people of Bhutan followed a kind of Shamanistic faith called "Bon" prior to the advent of Buddhism in the country. Between the 8th and 17th Century AD, a number of renowned Buddhist masters from both India and Tibet visited Bhutan and left their marks in the forms of monasteries, temples, fortresses and social beliefs and values. Buddhism provides a cohesion among the people of different regions in Bhutan during the middle ages but the country was unified under the central authority of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyle only during the 17th century. Towards the end of the theocratic regime, on the 17th of December 1907, the regional Governors, the powerful Clergy, and the representatives of the people, weary of the hardship faced due to factional rivalries and unending strife, unanimously elected Ugyen Wangchuck, the Penlop of Trongsa, as the first hereditary King of Bhutan.

The modern name for the country is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Bhu-Uttan' ('High Land'). The Bhutanese, however, have always known it as "Druk Yul". The indigenous people are "Drukpas" and the school of Buddhism they adhere to is the "Drukpa Kagyud". Bhutan is the last unspoilt Himalayan kingdom and the only nation in the world to profess Tantric Buddhism as its state religion. The most recent watershed in Bhutan's history was the coming to power of Ugyen Wangchuk, first hereditary monarch of Bhutan. Like the great Shabdrung, Ugyen Wangchuk pacified the feuding Regional Governors who had plunged Bhutan into a state of almost perpetual civil war. Having consolidated his authority across the entire country by 1885, he played the key mediator role between the British and the Chinese. Finally, on December 17 (Bhutan's National Day) 1907, Ugyen Wangchuk was unanimously elected by all Regional Governors and the Central Monastic Body, at the Punakha Dzong and crowned "Druk Gyalpo" ("Precious Ruler of the Dragon People). The present king, fourth hereditary monarch, is Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuk, upon whose coronation in 1974 Bhutan opened its doors to tourists. While tourism in Bhutan has come a long way since then, it has always been guided by the desire to preserve Bhutan's unique heritage and spectacular natural beauty. Visitors can thus still encounter a vibrant culture in an unspoilt environment.

The author is a New York Times correspondent who has spent considerable time in Bhutan and other Himalayan regions. Published in 1995, the book discusses some of the current development and political problems facing Bhutan. Dreams of the Peaceful Dragon is a traveller's account of a walk across Bhutan in the 1970s, before the road between Bumthang and Mongar was completed. It gives a good picture of trekking in Bhutan. Joanna Lumley in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon is by Joanna Lumley, the co-star of the BBC program Absolutely Fabulous . Her grandfather was a political officer in Sikkim; the book is based on a TV program that traced his trek through the country in the 1930s. The Raven Crown by the late Michael Aris is the definitive history of Bhutan's monarchy. Aris, who lived in Bhutan from 1967 to 1972, is the leading western authority on Bhutan's history. The book is lavishly illustrated with rare photographs of the early days of Bhutan that help show what a unique civilisation existed in the early 20th century. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rimpoche is a translation of Guru Rimpoche's Tibetan Book of the Dead. It's a sophisticated Himalayan Buddhist text, but worth a look if you are especially interested in learning about some of Bhutan's religious foundations.

The people of Monyul practiced a shamanistic religion that emphasized the worship of nature and the existence of good and evil spirits. At this time there was no central government in the country; separate valleys were ruled by feudal lords. As Buddhism matured within Bhutan, it became a unifying element for the country. Bhutan's rugged mountains and dense forests long rendered it almost inaccessible to the outside world, and the country's rulers reinforced this isolation by banning foreigners until well into the 20th century. Then, under pressure of neighbouring countries with strategic interests in Bhutan, a slow change began, and the lack of outside contacts became a hindrance to modernization. Bhutan's government is now committed to the twin policies of modernization and economic development. 1774 the deb raja signed a treaty of peace with the English East India Company. In the 1870s and 1880s regional rivalry between the pro-British governor of Tongsa and the anti-British governor of Paro resulted in the rise of Ugyen Wangchuck, the governor of Tongsa. Ugyen Wangchuck defeated his rivals and united the country under his leadership. After the dharma raja died in 1903 and no suitable replacement (who must be determined to be the reincarnation of the dharma raja) was found until 1906, the dual system of government was abolished. In 1907 Ugyen Wangchuck was installed as the first hereditary druk gyalpo of Bhutan. He reigned between 1907 and 1926. He was succeeded by his son Jigme Wangchuck, who reigned from 1926 to 1952.

This route was closed to all foreigners except Indian travellers in late 2001. There is a highly visible Indian army presence in Assam. If you choose, or are forced by road closure, to travel through this area, take extreme caution. Do not take inspections lightly - the Indian army is under continuous attack and understandably jittery.

B hutan's climate ranges from tropical in the south, to temperate in the centre of the country, to cold in the north...and can be quite unpredictable. The weather can vary dramatically from place to place and equally dramatically from day to day or even within the same day. In the Thimphu and Paro valleys, winter daytime temperatures average 60 degrees Fahrenheit during clear winter days but drop well below freezing during the night. Mid December to early January can be a beautifully clear and dry time in Western Bhutan. The fluctuations are not quite so great during the summer and daytime temperature often rises to the mid-eighties in Fahrenheit.

Differing ethnic groups are also distributed according to the varying environments. It is possible to divide Bhutan's population into three broad ethnic groups, though the distinctions blur in places. Southern Bhutan is inhabited mainly by Nepalese farmers who arrived in the country at the end of the 19th century. They brought the Hindu religion with them as well as the Nepalese language, which is still spoken today over much of Southern Bhutan. There is not the same mingling of Buddhism and Hinduism as is apparent in Nepal, and the two tend to keep apart. The central Himalayan region is the home of the Drukpa people, who are of Mongoloid origin. Most breed cattle or cultivate the land, and their dwellings are spread over a wide area. The Northern Himalayan Zone, over 3,000 meters (9,000 feet), is the haunt of semi nomadic yak herdsmen. They spend most of the year in their black yak hair tents, but also possess dry-stone walled houses, where they spend the coldest months of the year and which are used to store their goods. Additives to a diet composed mainly of yak milk, cheese, butter and meat are barley and winter wheat, plus a few root vegetables grown in small fields.
