The 15th-century Kingdom of Allada was succeeded by the more famous and influential Kingdom of Dahomey in the area that is now Benin. These kingdoms engaged in active trading with the Europeans who eventually arrived and built forts along the coast, and many of the Africans sent as slaves to Brazil and the Caribbean carried the culture of Dahomey with them. In 1894 the French took control of the territory, ruling it as part of French West Africa until 1960. Since independence, problems with political leadership and a slow economy have not suppressed the lively cultural traditions of this West African nation, which changed its name from Dahomey to Benin in 1975. Each ethnic group also has its own centuries-old tradition, which itself often mixes with the French influence. These cultural traditions are clustered in two distinct regions, the largely Muslim north and the largely animist and Christian south. In other sections of the towns, however, tradition dominates cultural life. Extractions: History The history of Benin is indistinguishable from that of the entire area of West Africa until the early part of the 17th century. Up until this time, the area had been divided into numerous principalities. It just takes one bad apple to spoil it for the rest of them, however, and in Benin's case a chief had a row with his brother and moved to Abomey before conquering the neighboring kingdom of Dan, which became known as Dahomey (Fon for 'in Dan's belly'). He then made a pledge - repeated by each successive king - to leave more land than he inherited. Not surprisingly, this policy led to war after war, and a particularly bad relationship with the powerful Yoruba of Nigeria. Of course, wherever there was a good fight, Europeans were never far behind, and the Portuguese and others began establishing trade posts at Porto Novo and Ouidah. The Dahomey traded with the Europeans; the hot item was prisoners of war sold into slavery in return for guns. For well over a century, an average of 10,000 slaves a year were shipped to the Americas, primarily Brazil and the Caribbean and particularly Haiti, exporting their knowledge and practice of voodoo. Benin had become perhaps the most beaten track by Europeans in Africa, and southern Benin had the dubious honour of being dubbed 'the Slave Coast'. In the 1800s the French sashayed in and gained control of the coast, making the kingdom of Dahomey part of French West Africa. Named the 'Latin Quarter of West Africa', Dahomey became famous over the next century for its educated elite, employed as regional advisors. This education process backfired on the French; the locals became vocal and began agitating for equality. They even published a newspaper critical of the French.

The aspect of Beninese culture that has garnered most interest worldwide is the practice of voodoo, an animistic religion observed by about 70% of the population. The belief is a polytheistic one that sees an interconnectedness of human and spirit worlds. Voodoo is, in a nutshell, the worship of the spirit in all things. A darker side of Benin culture is the widespread practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) - commonly described as 'female circumcision'. Though roundly condemned by international health experts, the practice remains quite widespread, particularly in the north of Benin where some studies suggest that as many as 50% of women have undergone the ritual. It means that you are welcome to speak in the home as you please, with nothing to be nervous about. It is considered rude not to offer water and not to drink water that is offered. As a foreigner, it is not always in the best interest of my health to drink water that is offered to me. I was relieved to learn that I may simply pour a little water on the ground as a symbolic gesture. By pouring water on the ground, I am saying that I am not alonespirits accompany me, and I am offering them the water. I would just like to give you a little information on the Dogbo-Ahome water pump where I took the photos for this project. Dogbo-Ahome is a small village located southwest of my village. The pump was put in by a "white man's project" fifteen years ago. According to the local story, the first day the pump was available to the local villagers, everyone came to get water. The local voodoo queen did not get to the pump in time, and the water had already been turned off when her helpers got there. The queen was angry and told her helpers to return to the pump, that it would be running when they got there. Since that day the water has run all the time. Before this pump was put in the people had to rely on collected rainwater or walk three kilometers to a well. Now water is always available and free to everyone.
