Extractions: Belize City, Wednesday, March 12, 2003 On the first day of official government business, following last Fridays swearing in of the new PUP government, the Ministry of Culture has announced the creation of an Interim Board of Director for the activation of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH). NICH will bring together the various wings of public sector cultural management and promotion, namely, the Arts Council, the Department of Archaeology and the Museums and Houses of Culture. Yasser Musa, the Director of the Image Factory Art Foundation has been appointed as President of the Interim Committee. Each of the Directors of the various departments will also serve on the Board: George Thompson from Archaeology, John Morris from Museums, Lita Krohn from Houses of Culture and the new Director of the Arts Council, Mr. Andy Palacio. The Secretariat of the NICH will be based at the Museum of Belize in Belize City. The 1998-2003 term of the PUP saw many major developments in culture the opening of the Museum of Belize, Houses of Culture in Belize City, Benque Viejo del Carmen and Orange Walk Town, a more vibrant music and visual arts industry, the internationalization of Belizean art with the Zero Exhibition and opening of Belize Center for Art Education, to mention just a few of the recent developments. In this new term, the PUP government will complete the new Bliss Performing Arts Auditorium and the renovated House of Culture in Belize City. These flagship centers, along with the new Museum of Belize in Belmopan, the Garifuna Museum in Dangriga and the Houses of Culture in Corozal and Punta Gorda will inject new energy into the cultural renaissance that has started.

Cordel Hyde, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports joined St. Martin De Porres School, corner of Partridge and Ebony Streets to celebrate the schools first cultural day celebration on Monday 18th November. Mrs. Veronica Jones, Standard I teacher, informed that it was a whole day event. The celebration began 9am when students gathered at the St. Martin De Porres Church and had a religious ceremony. Father John Stochl led the procession. Students read petitions and prayers in Spanish, Creole and English languages. Hymns were sung in different languages also. After the church service, the students paraded through the streets in Lake Independence and headed towards their classes. At school they had lunch and played cultural games. In the evening they had educational activities, contests and short dances. This, our first cultural day was one of awareness where we had items which belonged to different cultures displayed for the students. We displayed dresses, cooking utensils, and had cultural dishes for the students to sample. Every student got the opportunity to taste what other ethnic groups cultural food is. It was a small scale cultural fest, Mrs. Jones said.

Several major archeological sites, notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich, reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period also was marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century but Belize was not formally termed the "Colony of British Honduras" until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

Extractions: The last few days Well, the weekend did not go quite as I had planned. I got felled by one of those lovely stranger-in-a-strange land bugs and wasn't too lively for most of it. But I did get moved. On Saturday Francine, the woman who cleans here at Naturalight and works part time at Pelican, came to help me clean up the new place. It was pretty dirty. Mostly dust and sawdust and dead bugs which a vacuum likely would have made short work of. But we didn't have a vacuum. What we had was a broom, bucket, mop, scrub brush and one rag. (Here's some advice. If you're going to live in a foreign country, take more than one rag.) We also had Joy and bleach. So we scrubbed everything up as high as we could reach and called it good. The advantage of that cement floor is you just slosh to your heart's content and then mop down the floor when you're done. I discovered that plastic-coated metal louvers are waaaay harder to wash than windows and learned how to wash screens in a shower that sort of droobles a wad of water. Washing the body is interesting too. Anyway we worked for about 4 hours with some help from Francine's daughter (about 14 yrs old I guess) and lots of help from her 3-year-old son. In case there was any doubt, three year olds the world over like nothing better than playing in a bucket of soapy water, even if it is full of dead bugs. I was a bit concerned about how much to pay them and finally settled on offering BZ $50 (US $25) and watching for the reaction. It must have been okay, because Francine crossed herself.
