The exact date of its origin, however, remains unclear. Traces of historical evidence reveal that this manly art of self defense no doubt existed long before the arrival of the first Spanish colonizers in the country. Lapulapu The first known Philippino hero, Lapulapu, was believed to be one of the foremost masters of arnis, which was known during that time in the native dialect as pangamut. In fact, Lapulapu had vigorously trained and prepaired his men for "Showdown" fights against his enemies long before his historic battle with Ferdinand Magellan on April 27, 1521, in Mactan Island. It was no surprise then, that when the first circumnavigator of the world tried to subdue the recalcitrant Lapulapu, who refused to come and meet him in Cebu, Magellan and his men were met not with a hail of bullets but with wooden instruments, spears, and bolos. It was ironic that when the smoke of that epic battle cleared, the Spanish conquistadors more "modern" weapons were no match for the crude wooden arms of Lapulapu and his warriors. Magellan lost his life in that battle.

In the Beginning DOS - 1981 In 1981 when the original IBM Personal Computer was announced, IBM released three operating systems for it. How many of you remember that? Since I wrote the first IBM course on how to fix this original PC, I had to know at least a little about all three of them. IBM decided early in the development process of the PC that they did not want to hire a bunch of programmers to write software for it - especially an operating system. IBM wanted the hardware business and did not care about the software. Since there was no clear-cut contender for an operating system at the time, IBM approached three organizations about writing one for the PC. IBM first approached Digital Research and asked them to create a version of CP/M (Control Program/Microcomputer). The owner of DR snubbed the IBM lawyers and went flying or golfing (depending upon whose story you hear) instead.

    Extractions: Beginning in 57 BC, Julius Caesar extended the power of Rome into the region of Europe that is now Belgium. The people he encountered there were the Belgae , one of the various Celtic tribes of early Gaul, and the Romans dubbed their new province Gallia Belgica. In the fourth century AD, with Rome in decline, control of Gaul was ceded to the Franks, a Germanic tribe that the weakened empire employed as mercenaries. As the Franks flourished, they decided to dispense with their Roman employers. By 431, they had established an independent dynasty, the Merovingian, with its capital at Tournai. Soon after, under Clovis I (c.466-511), the Merovingians succeeded in pummeling the last of the Romans in Gaul. They held large parts of present day France and Belgium as well as southwestern Germany. Clovis also adopted Christianity, thus gaining the support of the Church.

The principal domestic problem is the continuing tension between the Flemish-speaking north and the French-speaking south of the country, whose inhabitants are known as Walloons. Electoral politics have been dominated by coalitions as none of the four major parties - the Socialists (PS), Christian Social (CVP), Flemish Liberal Democrats (VLD) and Liberal parties (PRL) - have been able to attract sufficient support to establish a government on their own. In addition, there are several smaller parties which have a significant influence over the outcome of elections: the ecological party 'Ecolo' and the Vlaams Blok established by extreme right-wing Flemish separatists. Coalitions of four or five parties have governed Belgium throughout the 1990s. In 1992, Belgium lost its popular and long-serving head of state when King Baudouin died; his brother, Prince Albert, then succeeded to the Belgian crown. In 1993, a new constitutional arrangement came into effect under which Belgium became a federal state: now comprising the largely autonomous region of Flanders, Wallonia and the bilingual Brussels district. A complicated three-tier system of local government (regional, provincial and communal) now prevails. During the late 1990s, a series of political scandals and badly-handled major criminal cases combined to undermine the Belgian people's already fragile confidence in the organs of state. At the most recent general election in June 1999, the ruling coalition was rejected in favour of a six-party grouping, headed by VLD leader Guy Verhofstadt, and including socialists and ecologists. But the high level of popular discontent continues to be reflected in the growing attaraction of the far-right Vlaams Blok, especially in local politics, where their influence is steadily growing.

Do not expect to find lace factories in Brussels or Bruges, they do not exist. There are four different techniques of lacemaking, two of which are no longer practiced today and therefore come under the heading of antique laces. There are important differences between embroidery and lace: the latter is worked on the basis of a paper pattern, on a net ( tulle ), or on a combination of both. UCHESS LACE This type of lace is manufactured on a "carreau" or cushion -taken from the Flemish word "kussen"-, on which the paper pattern is pinned. This pattern is the design to be realized in lace. The lacemaker generally works with 22 bobbins, two of which are called the " Conductors ". The more complicated the design, the more bobbins have to be used. For a Binche Point de Fee, up to 200 bobbins have to be utilized. The conductors are woven from left to right, and then from right to left. The end of the row having reached, the thread is held in place with a pin. The conductor's threads form the weft of the work, while the other bobbins form the warp, or the vertical threads of the design. To make the corner of a handkerchief, the lacemaker will have to work for about three days, depending upon her level of skill.

    Extractions: Antwerp Much of Jewish settlement in Europe began with the Roman conquests. Jews followed the path of the Roman legions to Belgium in the years 53-57 CE. Written evidence, however, only dates back to the 13th century. Hebrew tombstones and street names like "rue des Juifs" have been traced to 1255. Other sources mention Jews as early as 1200 in the Brabant province. Anti-Jewish measures can also be traced back to the 13th century. In his 1261 will, Duke Henry III ordered all Jews and usurers to be expelled from the Brabant province. At about the same time, theologian Thomas Aquinas suggested the Jews be taxed and forced to perform manual labor to prevent them from becoming wealthy as usurers. Although these measures did not adversely affect the Jewish population in Belgium, the 1309 crusade did. Jews who refused baptism were massacred.
