Personalize this site LYNX ARRIVE FROM CANADA FOR DIVISIONS REINTRODUCTION Four lynx captured in eastern Canada have arrived in Colorado, the first of up to 50 lynx the Division of Wildlife will reintroduce this spring in its ongoing effort to re-establish the native species in Colorados high country. The four lynx, captured in Quebec in December, arrived aboard an Air Canada jet at Denver International Airport. After an inspection and clearing customs, the lynx were driven to a holding facility in southern Colorado, where theyll spend the next several months to ensure that they are in prime condition for release. Wildlife managers plan to release the lynx in April at sites adjacent to the Weminuche Wilderness Area and in the San Juan National Forest. The reintroduction plan, approved Nov. 15, 2002 by the Colorado Wildlife Commission, calls for up to 180 lynx to be reintroduced to southwestern Colorado over the next five to six years, including up to 50 in each of the next three years.

The color of their coat varies from blond to reddish to dark brown. They have a prominent shoulder hump, rounded ears, and claws that measure more than 2 inches in length. Grizzly bears are omnivores . Their diet consists mostly of vegetation grasses, roots, nuts, and berries. They also feast on carrion (dead things), insects, fish, and small mammals and have been known to steal kills from other predators. There have always been grizzly bears in the North Cascades Ecosystem, however, many were killed by trappers, miners, and bounty hunters by 1860. The estimated current population of grizzly bears within the entire North Cascades Ecosystem is a maximum of 30-50 bears. Of these, a maximum of 20-30 reside in British Columbia north of Highway 3; Canadian officials do not have an estimate for the number of bears between Highway 3 and the international border. Many factors affect grizzly bear populations: they require a large territory or home range; there is increasingly little protected land available to them; they breed infrequently (once every 3 to 5 years); they have small litters averaging one to two cubs; they spend 2-1/2 to 4-1/2 years raising the cubs, and they are still hunted illegally by humans.

Today representatives of Canada's endangered species showed up at the Hyatt Regency where the Prime Minister and his Caucus are meeting. The animals and fish condemned the government's failure to protect their habitat and future. Only a tiny fraction of those species under threat were able to make it: grizzly bears, salmon, elk, fox and numerous other animals carried placards that said, "WILL WORK FOR HABITAT". Hundreds of other species had to send their regrets, stating that they are too busy trying to find a place to live, now that their habitat has been destoyed. Habitat destruction is responsible for 80 percent of species decline in Canada. "The proposed legislation ignores the fact that most species walk, fly or swim," said Tzeporah Berman of Greenpeace. "We cannot protect endangered species without strong Federal leadership that ensures habitat protection across Canada."

A full grown kermode bear is about as big as two men, sometimes bigger and weighs about 250 pounds. When it stands up, it looks like a big, fat, man in a fur coat! The Kermode bear's fur keeps it warm and dry and it is made of two kinds of hair. Kermode bears are very strong and can turn over heavy logs when searching for food. Kermode bears have white claws and cream coloured coats. They have brown eyes and beige noses. They are "omnivorous" which means that they eat meat and plants. They need lots of food! They eat honey from wild bees nests, grasshoppers, grass and ants, roots, berries, nuts and fruit, mice and ground squirrels, fish and lots of salmon. Extractions: Wetlands support many of Florida's most popular and endangered species. The Southwest Florida Water Management District has acquired several tracts of wetlands in order to preserve them. Imagine travelling back in time a few hundred years and visualize the area where you live. What do you see there? No houses or cars, buildings or streets. Instead you see mostly marshes and grasslands, swamps and forests-hardly touched by humans. What animals might you see there? In wild grasslands, you might see a red wolf stalking its prey. In an estuary, you might see a West Indian monk seal sunning itself in the warm water. In a large open plain, you might even see a small herd of roaming buffalo. Florida still has millions of acres of wetlands and wilderness where a variety of animals den and nest, eat and are eaten. However, some animals are missing from the Florida landscape. The wolf, monk seal and buffalo among many others have all disappeared from Florida -they have become extinct. The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission currently lists more than 100 animals in the state as endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. Each of these species is in danger of becoming extinct unless the harmful factors affecting their habitats cease. Animals in Florida can become extinct for a number of reasons, ranging from loss of habitat to overhunting, from pesticides to vehicle collisions. Some species have become so fragile that a hurricane or viral infection can cause their extinction. Once a species becomes extinct, it is gone forever. Many of Florida's most popular animals including the panther, manatee and our national symbol, the bald eagle face the risk of becoming extinct - unless people act in order to save them. Fortunately, people today care now more than ever and are willing to act, brightening the future of many of the animals currently listed as endangered species.
