Extractions: by Pastor Gary W. Hendrix What is the centerpiece or the objective of true religion? The answer to that question ought to be so obvious as to make the question totally unnecessary. Sadly, however, there is a great deal of confusion on that point. That confusion seems to exist even among those who are themselves very religious. What's the problem? Romans 11:36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. NKJ Revelation 4:11 "You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created." These Biblical statements are in fact representative of all that God has said to us in His Word. God created all things, including mankind, for Himself; that is, for His glory and pleasure. The end of all things will result in God's glory and pleasure. Thus, the conscious end of God's creatures must be God Himself. For us to aim at any other end, especially our own glory and pleasure, is to set ourselves in competition with God. Nothing could be more disastrous! We must lose ourselves in seeking to know God and to do all His good will. This is not merely the great purpose of religion, it is the great purpose of our entire existence. Our approach to our own lives, to our physical well-being, to our material condition, to our families, to our work, to our education, to the development and use of our abilities, to our recreation, to every single thing comprising our brief stay in this world must aim at pleasing God and responding to His will.

If your only child was on the brink of death due to a rare disease and you had just enough time to seek help from one of two people, a person who had heard much folklore about curing illness and an experienced physician who had himself conducted enormous research and had studied under the foremost authorities pertaining to your child's sickness, which would you choose? The answer is a "no call." In such a case, we would all want the person with the best, the most objectively proven knowledge. Every one of us do in fact face a very similar predicament with respect to our own souls. We are each appointed to die, due to our sin, and after that to stand before God in order to be consigned to our everlasting dwelling place. This life, with all of its uncertainties, is the only opportunity provided for us to prepare for eternity. Time is of the essence for death is often unexpected. Truth is also of the essence for a mistake will have horrendous, irreversible consequences. Who do we consult for direction in making preparation? Do we resort to people who have very strong opinions and conjectures on the subject? Do we entrust ourselves to long and standing traditions and to the institutions which uphold those traditions? Or do we stake our lives upon what God Himself has said.the same God who will be our Judge?

Those within the church sometimes forget that once they were outside the church. The Bible teaches that all of us have committed sin and we all stand in need of God's forgiveness. Churches should preach against sin, but they should also remember that Jesus lived and died to make sure that we find God's love instead of His punishment for sin. What is sin anyway? The Bible says that sin is breaking God's law, that means doing something we ought not, or perhaps not doing something we ought. Why is sin so important? Why is it so bad? God set the penalty for sin, and that is death. Because He is Holy, sinfulness cannot come into His presence, and to be separated from Him is death, both physically and eternally. But there is Good News. God provided a way to escape punishment and for us to be made holy enough to come into His presence both now and forever. That way is through His Son Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for our sin by dying on the cross. And because He died without having sinned, our sin is paid for by the gift of His life.
