Facts About Schools As the father of two high school graduates and the husband of a teacher, I've learned many lessons about what makes a school good and an education excellent. The more I see, the more I am convinced of one thing: every child can learn. Great schools do great works in the life of a child, and I have watched it happen. But we must do more. Because I believe every child can learn, I intend to ensure that every child does learn. My Administration put forward a plan called No Child Left Behind based on four principles: accountability for results; local control and flexibility; expanded parental choice; and effective and successful programs. We are pursuing these principles because too many of our schools fail to help every child learn. As our children return to school, we should reflect on how we can improve the schools they attend. It's time to set high standards for what children should know and be able to do, to give our schools the tools they need to help children reach those high standards, and to demand that they reach them. We know that every child can learn; it is time to ensure that every child does learn.

Extractions: Create a bulletin board that resembles a huge jigsaw puzzle with interconnecting pieces. Title the board "We Go Together."As each student arrives, give him/her a piece from the puzzle. Have them draw pictures or symbols and write words that describe them and their families. When all the students have finished, allow them to assemble the puzzle, attaching the pieces to the board. For easy assembly, I write numbers on the back of each piece. This allows me to aid the students in their assembly of the puzzle.

All of this has changed and the women teachers gathered together to upgrade their teaching skills in preparation for the opening of the new school year on 23 March and now all Afghan girls and boys have the chance to realize one of their fundamental rights as enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child : the right to education. The Interim Authority is working hard to ensure that 1.5 million Afghan girls and boys will return to school on 23 March, the official start of the new school year. UNICEF is supporting the Interim Authority to address these and other issues, as the rebuilding and recovery process of the education system begins. During his address, he emphasized that all Afghan people need to help ensure that all Afghan girls and boys return to school to not only rebuild their lives, but to also rebuild Afghan society. Marastial also stated clearly that his door was always open and that he encouraged the viewpoints of female teachers so that working together, the Afghanistan education system could get back on its feet as quickly as possible.

Fifth in a series DAY ONE Bad teeth epidemic among poor children In recent years, they've been buoyed by reports from around the country that conclude a child's capacity to learn is strengthened by an ongoing exposure to the arts. Nonetheless, the teachers say, when budgets are cut the arts are often the first to go. Soon, though, arts teachers in Pennsylvania may be handed a new lobbying tool: state standards for arts education that detail what a child in the public school system should know about the arts and when. Unlike many other subjects, the arts in Pennsylvania have never had such comprehensive state standards. Though other teachers sometimes find such guidelines confining, many art teachers are looking forward to their adoption.

They have put up calendars, posters and alphabet charts on the freshly painted walls and wiped a summer's worth of dust off bookshelves. But the women's most critical preseason chore is arranging the furniture. Learning Support teacher Lisa Lester, accompanied by her 2-year-old daughter Aviana Nunnally, positions desks in her third-grade classroom in preparation for next week's first day of school. Lester, who teaches from a wheelchair, is in her ninth year of teaching at Clairton Elementary School. (Martha Rial, Post-Gazette) Bittner and Lester teach from wheelchairs, and they must make plenty of room to maneuver around pupils' desks and chairs. "With us, space is always an issue," said Bittner, 28, a first- and second-grade learning support teacher. Thirty miles away in Downtown Pittsburgh, Richard Lewis, too, is pondering his classroom layout as he prepares for classes to get under way at Pleasant Hills and South Allegheny middle schools.

Unlike your school year, which starts in August or September and ends in May or June, most of Afghanistan's schools start in March and end in December. You have a summer vacation, while most Afghan children break from school during the harshest months of the winter. Children return to school after Nawrz Roz , the New Year holiday in Afghanistan. In preparation for the first day of school in Afghanistan, President and Mrs. Bush discussed the U.S. contributions to the women and children of Afghanistan at Samuel W. Tucker School in Alexandria, Virginia on March 20, 2002. Mrs. Bush announced a new global partnership to help provide school uniforms and jobs to the women and girls of Afghanistan. This is the first time in several years that many Afghan boys and girlsespecially girlswill have the chance to attend school. The people of Afghanistan have been hurt by years of civil war and a brutal government that didn't give its citizens the freedoms that we enjoy. When the Taliban regime was running the country (from 1996 through 2001), girls were banned from the classroom. Women teachers weren't allowed to teach. Not many boys went to school either. Only 32 percent of Afghanistan's 4.4 million children were enrolled in school in 1999. Nearly all girls, 92 percent, were not in school.

Extractions: 28 March 2002 Press information: Miranda Stephenson, Science Education Group 01904 432523 Visits to industrial sites and residential study courses at university are on the curriculum for school science teachers in two new programmes designed to enhance their teaching. Science teachers in primary and secondary schools are set to benefit from two programmes being developed at the University of York to enhance science education. The programme has been made possible by a grant from Gatsby Technical Education Projects. Primary school teachers will work with industrial partners to arrange visits by school children to industrial sites. Topics which might be taught with industrial themes include water usage in industry and the properties and uses of plastics. Visits to industrial sites will help the children to understand the application of scientific principles. The project will benefit both teachers and pupils by helping them understand the role of science in industry. The secondary school Science Enhancement Programme will draw upon the links which have been established at the University between the Science Education Group and the departments of Physics, Chemistry and Educational Studies. Teachers on the programme will attend a three week residential study course. The focus will be upon updating teachers' knowledge of their subject, with contributions from external speakers from industry, as well as updating their knowledge of the latest developments in the teaching of science.
