Extractions: The challenges presented by inaccessible food sources may have played a large role in the evolution of the primate brain. Solving the problem of removing small nuts from shells or capturing tiny insects requires animals to be ingenious in their feeding methods; they may begin to mentally map the location of the food if they cannot see it, or they may use tools to access their foods (A. Jolly 1985). Theropithecus gelada of Ethiopia occupy a graminivorous niche; they feed chiefly upon the greenest blades of grasses which they must carefully pluck using their long thumbs (Krentz 1993). It has been suggested that the gelada, with their highly-developed precision grip, resemble the early hominids, who were also small-object feeders (C. Jolly, in A. Jolly 1985). Theropithecus gelada have adapted to a graminivorous niche in several ways, and this specific niche occupation has various effects on the geladas behavior. If their preferred grass blades are not in good supply, the gelada will eat roots, bulbs, and rhizomes; this dietary flexibility is especially needed during the dry season. Morphological characteristics specialized to the graminivorous niche include dentition, thumb opposability, robusticity, a seated feeding position, and terrestriality. The geladas occupation of a graminivorous niche offers much protection on the Ethiopian savanna; no other primate shares the same feeding habits and schedule as the gelada.

Extractions: We identify three traits that are transmitted in humans in a Mendelian fashion: Aggression (A), Perfectionism (P) and Narcissism (N). We believe that the genetic loci corresponding to these traits will soon be identified. Thus, DNA analyses in the near future will allow one to trace personality traits and even personality types in ancestral hominid lineages. The trait of perfectionism is not a basic drive of ambition and is not associated with a rage reaction. Rather it is a mediator of the unbridled drives of aggression and/or narcissism. The stereotypic acts associated with the trait of perfectionism are obsessiveness, compulsiveness, repetition, and the maintenance of neatness, order and symmetry. It is concluded that certain autistic and schizophrenic individuals are those in whom the two components of ambition, i.e., aggression and narcissism, have been suppressed by genetic or environmental factors, either congenitally, in childhood, or after maturity, thus revealing in the individual a primitive state of perfectionism.

That is, it is an example of an ADAPTATION... a physical trait, in this case, that had a selective advantage for individuals, allowing them to achieve greater reproductive success and pass that on to their offspring. Most anthropologists have long thought only humans can donate information in this manner. Now, a new book written by Barbara King , assistant professor of anthropology, suggests human's primate cousins also have the capability. Titled The Information Continuum, King's study is based in part on more than 1,000 hours of data gathered during a 14- month field study of baboons in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. The anthropologist originally began her research to observe baboons' foraging habits. However, she soon became intrigued by the way the infants seemed to extract information from their mothers and other female relatives about how and what to eat. Closely observing two groups of 110 baboons which included 19 infants, King noticed the primates attentively observed what plants their mothers ate and also how they ate them. Often, the infants simultaneously ate the same food their mothers consumed. King recalled one rare, but dramatic instance, when an infant didn't follow an adult's lead and chose to eat a piece a bark, a substance that no baboon had ever consumed in King's presence. After eating it, the baboon soon became sick and vomited. Its mother, meanwhile, did nothing to help the child.

But there it was, the male baboon, fearsome with his daggerlike canines, menacing a female half his size. The male chased the female around the savanna and up a nearby acacia tree, until she hung high up on branches barely able to support her weight. The attacker kept up his threats from a nearby limb while the other baboons in the group ignored the sceneall but one adult female, who ran to the tree's base and started screaming at the male. Why did this one animal come to the rescue? To Altmann, who with his wife and fellow researcher, Jeanne, PhD'79, has been studying the baboons of Kenya's Amboseli National Park since 1963, the answer was obvious: The female under attack was her daughter. He tells the story to show how even the baboons' most basic behaviors would be mystifying without being able to recognize individual animals and knowing which is related to which. Those methods, rare when the Altmanns first came to Kenya but now standard procedure in studies of wild primates, are typical of the many advances they've helped bring about. While the average primate study lasts, by one estimate, just 18 months, the Altmanns, through intense, long-term observation, have untangled the meaning of behaviors more complexand more variable among individualsthan brief studies could ever reveal.
