Product Description

Dissident democratic leaders are exceptional individuals who risk much trying to advance the cause of democracy in authoritarian regimes. This unique and intriguing book employs fine-grained studies of ten dissident leaders in Asia to show their vital role in democratic transformations. The vivid and dramatic accounts of their political struggles reveal how particular institutional, cultural, religious and ethnic conditions affect individual leaders. They also display the powerful challenges, dangers and temptations that dissidents face. One of the most important themes of the book is the way dissident leaders must learn to manage and negotiate the ambiguities and tensions of democratic leadership itself.

Product Description
Close to a decade after the collapse of the Soviet bloc, the communist parties of China and Vietnam are not only surviving but are firmly in control. Both countries have moved decidedly away from the state-planned economies their governments championed for decades. They are now "market economies" and can look with some satisfaction to their recent records of economic performance. Yet, unlike their European counterparts, they have made this transition without undergoing major political upheavals. Arguing that an understanding of the similarities and differences among communist countries provides valuable insights into their momentous transformations, this comprehensive volume compares recent changes in China and Vietnam. Exploring the economic, political, and social effects of reform programs, the chapters pair leading Vietnam and China scholars in a genuinely comparative analysis. Finding similarities-and unexpected differences-the authors conclude that Vietnam often has forged its own path rather than following the Chinese model. ... Read more

Product Description

The Indian constitution seeks to prevent the perpetuation of caste and build a casteless social system. But in over half a century since Indian independence, this has not been achieved and does not seem likely in the near future. Therefore, no understanding of Indian politics is possible without a thorough understanding of the complexities of the caste system. The aim of this four-part book is to bring about such an understanding. It begins by examining the various meanings attached to the notion of caste. The essay and book extracts in this first section include classic writings on caste such as those by G S Ghurye, Louis Dumont, Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar. The second part consists of essays that demonstrate the relationship between caste and power. The third part comprises material that investigates caste and various Indian political practices on the ground. The fourth, on caste and social transformation, includes discussion on one of the most salient topics in contemporary Indian politics, namely, the issue of reservations for socially backward castes.

Product Description
East Asian democracies are in trouble, their legitimacy threatened by poor policy performance and undermined by nostalgia for the progrowth, soft-authoritarian regimes of the past. Yet citizens throughout the region value freedom, reject authoritarian alternatives, and believe in democracy. This book is the first to report the results of a large-scale survey-research project, the East Asian Barometer, in which eight research teams conducted national-sample surveys in five new democracies (Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Mongolia), one established democracy (Japan), and two nondemocracies (China and Hong Kong) in order to assess the prospects for democratic consolidation. The findings present a definitive account of the way in which East Asians understand their governments and their roles as citizens. Contributors use their expert local knowledge to analyze responses from a set of core questions, revealing both common patterns and national characteristics in citizens' views of democracy. They explore sources of divergence and convergence in attitudes within and across nations. The findings are sobering. Japanese citizens are disillusioned. The region's new democracies have yet to prove themselves, and citizens in authoritarian China assess their regime's democratic performance relatively favorably. The contributors to this volume contradict the claim that democratic governance is incompatible with East Asian cultures but counsel against complacency toward the fate of democracy in the region. While many forces affect democratic consolidation, popular attitudes are a crucial factor. This book shows how and why skepticism and frustration are the ruling sentiments among today's East Asians. ... Read more

Product Description
In the summer of 1997, a tidal wave of economic problems swept across Asia. Currencies plummeted, banks failed, GNP stagnated, unemployment soared, and exports stalled. In short, the vaunted "Asian Economic Miracle" became the "Asian Economic Crisis"--with serious repercussions for nations and markets around the world.

While the headlines are still fresh, a group of experts on the region presents the first account to focus on the political causes and implications of the crisis. The events of 199798 involved not just property values, financial flows, portfolio makeup, and debt ratios, they argue, but also the power relationships that shaped those economic indicators.

As they examine the domestic, regional, and international politics that underlay the economic collapse, the authors analyze the reasons why the crisis affected the nations of Asia in radically different ways. The authors also consider whether the crisis indicates a radical change in Asia's economic future.

Product Description
In the late 1980s, India seemed to have finally broken the shackles of the Hindu rate of growth. The reforms process begun in the early 1990s put the economy on a high growth trajectory, or did it? From the late 1990s, again the growth process faltered and then picked up momentum. While the latest Economic Survey is correct in stating that the economy has moved "decisively" to a higher growth phase, it is yet too premature to say what a sustainable growth rate in the near future is going to look like. This volume written by experts in this field provides a bird's eye view of the growth experience in recent years. The essays start with a discussion on the growth experience in recent years. Then the composition of the government budgets is explored in some detail to examine the nature of fiscal imbalances. Since the generation of additional savings and channelling of savings into investment is a critical element in the whole process of growth, two essays deal with the nature of financial sector reforms in India and the current state of the financial system. The volume concludes with two essays examining the question of macroeconomic management in an open economy. ... Read more

Product Description

India became independent in 1947 and, after nearly three years of debate in the Constituent Assembly, adopted a Constitution that came into effect on 26 January 1950. This Constitution has lasted until the present, with its basic structure unaltered, a remarkable achievement given that the generally accepted prerequisites for democratic stability did not exist, and do not exist even today. Half a century of constitutional democracy is something that political scientists and legal scholars need to analyze and explain. This volume examines the career of constitutional-political ideas (implicitly of Western origin) in the text of the Indian Constitution or implicit within it, as well as in actual political practice in the country over the past half-century.

Product Description
The Outsiders Within is an engaging account of the ways in which over hundreds of years Indigenous and Asian people across northern and central Australia have traded, intermarried and built hybrid communities. It is also a disturbing expose of the persistent, sometimes paranoid, efforts of successive national governments to police, marginalize and outlaw these encounters.

Stephenson focuses on four key moments: the outlawing of Macassan-Yolngu trading in 1906; the separation of Asians and Aborigines under laws introduced between 1897 and 1911; the internment of people of mixed Japanese-Indigenous ancestry during World War II. Finally she looks at the revival of hatred against Australia's 'outsiders within' in 1996 when Pauline Hanson, MP, leader of the extreme right party, One Nation, yoked Aborigines and Asians, claiming they represented a common threat to Australia's social and political cohesion.

The Outsiders Within brings to life the different views and experiences of those involved by drawing on family narratives and oral histories as well as official documents. Its story is set within the larger ongoing debate about Australia's identity and shows how these four historical moments are now being refracted through plays, paintings, installations, and novels. ... Product Description
Food security can be defined as the perceived availability of a high-quality, domestically-produced staple food supply which will maintain the existing standard of living. This book provides a forum for a panel of distinguished authors to debate such issues as whether or not many developed countries in Asia - such as Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong and Singapore - have legitimate concerns about their food security. They find, controversially, that this issue is of importance to all countries, not just to developing countries lacking the income to acquire an adequate food supply.

The authors analyze the forces affecting the demand for, and supply of, staples such as rice, vegetable oils and protein meals. Rice is the most important staple in Asia and so the authors pay particular attention to the effects of rice production strategies and trade policies on food security. They examine the implications of trade liberalization in the ASEAN free trade area and in East Asia on agricultural trade and food security. They also discuss the implications of China's ongoing economic transition on its intra-provincial and international agricultural trade, and its policy on self-sufficiency.

Food Security in Asia provides a timely evaluation of the food security issue which will be of interest to scholars of Asian studies, agricultural economics and international economics. ... Read more
