5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative art book
What a great book! Each page offers interesting information regarding art, whether it be about artists, museums, techniques or even interactive exercises in drawing. I'm not through reading it yet, but what I have read is really interesting. I have learned so many things, I feel like I have taken an expensive college class without the high cost. I'd like to see more subjects included in other Daily Books (hopefully this will be a series...hint hint publisher), such as music (which I would love to learn more about also) and religions of the world. I bet there are 365 different religions that we could learn about. It's nice to see a collaboration of numerous writers/artists in one book, it gives you so many different perspectives. Anyway, enjoyed THIS book a lot and am looking forward to other books along this line.

5-0 out of 5 stars the daily book of art
As a beginning artist the book is extremely helpful in that its style is simple enough, yet very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I love this book. It is very well written and very interesting. I definitely recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Wanting to broaden my knowledge of not only history of art but the subject in general I went in search of Art books and I came across this book.I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, it's a rather small book so I figured there couldn't be much in depth coverage of anything since the subjects are limited to just a single page but there's actually quite a bit of information in here.

Each page of this book contains a writing that falls into one of the following categories:
Art 101 with Elizabeth T Gilbert
Philosophy of Art with Colin Gilbert
Art Through the Ages with Amy Runyen
Profiles in ARt with Rebecca J. Razo
A pictures worth 200 words with Dylan Gilbert
Art From the inside out with Sharon Robinson
Art Around the World with Sharon Robinson
Unexpected Art Forms with David J Schmidt
Artistic Oddities with Gabriel Guzman
Step by Step Exercises

Of course with such a small amount of space for each subject there's no in depth coverage or discussion of any of the subjects. However, you get some nice highlights and entertaining discussions that will make you stop and think and may inspire you to go in search of other resources for more information. At the very least some of these writings will prompt some lively discussion. You'll also get a chance to flex your artistic skills in the form of drawing and sketching using the Step by Step exercises that appear at each 10 day interval in the book.

Sprinkled throughout the book you'll find Questions to Ponder, Fun Facts and Try This boxes along with some beautiful photographs and illustrations. This is a really well done book that is a must have for anyone wanting to get acquainted with or broaden their overall knowledge of the art world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Gift Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver for a visual-spacial, homeschooled student
We happened upon this book by chance. It is the first curriculum my child has actually thanked me for and looked forward to doing.I can only hope that this is a taste of the future of textbooks.I highly recommend this book to any educator of fifth through tenth graders, but especially to those who teach visual-spatial students.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book!
I had the fantastic honor of meeting Teri Tibbett in person and my childrenworked with her for two days. She is such a wonderful teacher and a joy to listen to! She shared from this book and I had to buy it. The information is presented in an interesting way and you can have fun learning history and how music is tied into it.I can't say enough good things about this book--buy it. You wont' be disappointed! Look for her other books at tibbet.com too. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun AND Educational
I used this book in Summer School this year with 9,10 and 11 year olds and found it to be an excellent blueprint for study of American Music. Tibbett has done her research and provides a comprehensive look at the cultural backgrounds to today's music. The examples on the CD are from original artists when possible and when not, Tibbett steps in admirably.

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a music teacher to love this book
This book is well organized, easy to use, and will entice your reluctant readers and writers to learn more because the subject is music! You students will be thrilled when their culture is the subject of the lesson. At my school we even used it with teens and just accelerated the pace abit. Thank you Teri for capturing your knowledge and love of music, culture, language and children all in one place! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book if you intend to teach yourself and is an absolute beginner!
The pace of this book is VERY fast and it overwhelm me, and it doesn't go into detail about new music concept. For example, it said "Legato : play smoothly"

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I have voice training from my drama background, so I already had the basics of breathing. This book though, was a step by step guide of exactly how to manage your tongue, throat and body for proper production of the singing voice.I was amazed by a noticeable and instant improvement to my singing voice. Highly recommended for the beginning singer!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, maybe
This book is not at all helpful if you already know how to read music and carry a basic tune.It might be helpful to someone who's never tried to read music or sing before, but not me (I have 11 yrs. instrumental music experience).I guess I'm going to have to fork out $$$ for professional lessons!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best book for learning to sing!!
This is a wonderful book for all levels of singers, from beginners to advanced! The vocal instruction included in this book is practical and easy to follow. The approach is gentle and holistic. The exercises are simple, fun, and well-explained.I liked that the emphasis is on discovering your own unique voice, not trying to emulate anyone else's.I learned a lot more here than in thevoice course I took in college!

There is information on reading music and some physiological information about vocal production that was very interesting and enlightening. The songs are from all sorts of genres, many of them classic folk and pop songs. The performance advice was great, too.

I especially liked the CD with accompaniments to the songs included, and enjoyed singing to it.The enhanced CD /computer part of the disk was great- I could use it on my CD player, or pop it into my computer. I love that on the computer there are options where I can adjust the tempo and pitch to my comfort zone.I am thrilled because I have seen wonderful results and improvements in my singing!I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about singing! ... Product Description
Portraits in Music is a collection of background material to be used in conjunction with 15 pieces of music for listening. While the music has been chosen carefully for its liveliness and general appeal, the depth of treatment, which it will receive will depend on the needs and abilities of the class. Each piece is covered in units of 3-5 pages containing background information drawn from original sources, songs to sing with guitar accompaniments, notes on composers, and their periods, suggestions for follow-up work, useful information about forms, styles, and instruments, numerous illustrations, and a quiz. In general, the pieces illustrate the theme that people, places, and events have been a source of musical inspiration to many great composers: the scoundrel character of Till Eulenspiegel, the romance of Scotland, the tragic journey of Captain Scott to the South Pole. Portraits in Music attempts to remove some of the traditional barriers which frequently exist between music and other subject areas of the curriculum in the secondary school such as visual arts, drama, literature, poetry, and social studies. Some of the many pieces include the following: Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, Sinfonia Antartica by Ralph Vaughan Williams, The Execution of Stepan Razin by Dmitri Shostakovich, Romeo and Juliet by Peter Llich Tchaikovsky, Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms, Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, Billy the Kid by Aaron Copland, Portmouth Point by William Walton, An American in Paris by George Gershwin, and Washington's Birthday by Charles Ives. ...
