Product Description
The Album of Armenian Paleography provides a comprehensive selection of some 200 definitively dated, handwritten texts, sampled from among the 30,000 manuscripts preserved in the major public collections of Europe, the Middle East, the former USSR and North America. Selected specimen pages from these manuscripts are presented in chronological order, and span the period from AD 862 to 1911. Each text is illustrated by a high-quality color facsimile of a typical page, and is accompanied by an alphabet table for the folio in question and a sample transcription. All photographs are new, taken especially for the Album. Thanks to the large format of the volume it has been possible to show all manuscript pages (except the very largest) in actual size. In addition, each facsimile page is accompanied by a color enlargement of several lines of the text, enabling the reader to study the lettering in even greater detail.

In a separate section, computerized tables are used to show changes in the forms of individual letters. By following the development of letter shapes, it is possible to discern the evolutionary process of the Armenian scripts in a far more detailed and sophisticated manner than the traditional division of the Armenian hands. This provides much more precise datings than those previously available to scholars. The foundations are thus laid for a better understanding of the chronology of Armenian manuscripts and the literature and art they contain.

This volume will be an indispensable tool for any serious student of the Armenian language, literature and art, and its innovative approach to the study of lettering will be of interest to paleographers and codicologists. ... Read more

Product Description
The book offers a comprehensive treatment of Classical Armenian nouns as transmitted in the 5th century Bible translation. Beside a synchronic classification and functional investigation of the individual stem classes, suffixes and nominal compounds, the main stress has been laid on the historical evaluation, in particular in connection with the inherited formational types and isolated, lexicalized relics.

The historical-comparative approach to the Armenian material hasresulted in a number of new suggestions and modifications of earliertheories, summarized in two sections on the general development ofIndo-European into Armenian, one on phonology and one on morphologywhere an occasional tentative glimpse at the pre-history of theproto-language is ventured.

The non-indigenous parts of the vocabulary, mostly Iranian loanwords and words of a more or less obscure origin, are listed in appendices. ... Read more

Product Description
The author of Samuel, Baruyr Haykaz, and Starvation whose real name was Hagop Melik-Hagopian, is well known by his pseudonym, Raffi. He was an Armenian from that part of Armenia which was under the Mohammedan rule of the Shah of Persia. In the Dairy of a con artist he proposes the civic duties and responsibilities of individuals. He vividly depicts the dark side of the human being but proposes the nurture as opposed to the nature theory. He suggests the society as responsible for creating fertile grounds for individuals' actions. Hence, he proposes the responsibility of the society to its individual in parallel with civic duties of the individuals to the society. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good source but needs to be updated
At first, I was extremely excited at getting a copy of this dictionary. I was hoping it would meet the expectations, but did not know what to expect as an online picture of the inside pages were not available. Now that I've received it, I must say that I am a little disappointed by the quality of the print. Some letters in Armenian look very similar when the print is a little smudged and it is very difficult to read. It looks like a bad photocopy of an original. Otherwise, it's a good source. I'd also recommend a Latin phonetic equivalent for each word for those who cannot read the Armenian script.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst dictionary ever...
EnglishArmenian; Armenian English Dictionary: A Dictionary of The Armenian Language

You need otherthings than a pretty cover to have a good book like nice legible fonts, reasonable size and content. Unfortunately this book laks all. The fonts are too small, the print quality is horrible it looks like a photocoppied dictionary that has been professionally binded. The quality also varries from page to page, there are pages that if one tries hard then he/she can make out the letters and parts that you just have to flip the page. As far as content it is very poor, both English and Armenian are languages with very rich vocabulary. Both languages have many words with multiple meaning and it does not do justice to any of the languages to have only one of the few meanings written in the dictionary. I am by no means a linguist but by flipping through pages I came accross the most random words that are useless with the most random definitions. I am so dissatisfied with the book that I returned it within 5 minutes of getting it and would strongly recommend not waisting your time or money on this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only Fair AndNeeds Improvement
Firstly, I was leery about it being in paperback. For more money, I would have been willing to buy it in hardback.I appreciated the introduction about Armenian history and language. It was informative. In the English-Armenian section, I encountered English words that I had never seen before. An Armenian learning modern English will never use these words. In the same section, the small case Armenian type isblurry and confusing. For example, a small case Armenian a and a small case Armenian t are very similar. In various entries, it was difficult for me,if not impossible, to distinguish which was which. In the Armenian-English section, the same thing is true, but it is not as bad. In both sections, some of the English type is not clear either. Yet, I have been able to learn from the book. Hence, it is not a total loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best from Armenia compared to the others
I recommend this dictionary to anyone learning Armenian; Orfor any Armenian who wishes to learb English. dictionaries, particularly this large, are a must for people wishing to learn a language in a serious way,
This dictionary is the finest Armenian dictionary so far. However, I am disappointed the definitions tend to be short, so much so that the full nuance is lost. Illustrative examples of word use are also greatly reduced. Like other Armenian, it does not provide the pronunciation of many words that the editors consider familiar to native speakers of Armenian. The dictionary is easy to follow and extremely thorough, and would be beneficial to students and professionals alike.
Despite its drawbacks it is still a brilliant, user friendly dictionary that is indispensable for the beginning learner.

Product Description
The «Physiologus», an early Christian writing in Greek (ca. 200 A.D.), consists of cameo stories about the nature of animals, with a religious interpretation of their peculiarities. It was widespread during the Middle Ages in various languages. The study of more than forty manuscripts of the Armenian «Physiologus» reveals its main recension (ms M2101 and others), translated during the first half of the fifth century, and two subsequent recensions. The translation is close to the eleventh century Greek Codex Mosquensis (Synodal Library 432). The «Physiologus» had widespread influence in both eastern and western writings, and the Armenian version is one of the oldest and most faithful witnesses. In addition, the "revised diplomatic edition" of the parallel Greek and Armenian texts based on the mentioned manuscripts, regards variant readings which bring the two texts close to each other, helping to reconstruct their archetype. ... Excerpt: Bulgarian ( , pronounced ) is an Indo-European language, a member of the Slavic linguistic group. Bulgarian demonstrates several linguistic innovations that set it apart from all other Slavic languages except the Macedonian language, such as the elimination of case declension, the development of a suffixed definite article (see Balkan linguistic union), the lack of a verb infinitive, and the retention and further development of the proto-Slavic verb system. Various verb forms exist to express unwitnessed, retold, and doubtful action. Estimates of the number of people around the world who speak Bulgarian fluently range from about 8.5 million to 9 million. The Bulgarian language is mutually intelligible with the Macedonian language. The development of the Bulgarian language may be divided into several historical periods. The Codex Zographensis one of the oldest manuscripts in the Old Bulgarian language dated from the late 10th or early 11th centuryBulgarian was the first "Slavic" language attested in writing. As Slavic linguistic unity lasted into late antiquity, in the oldest manuscripts this language was initially referred to as , "the Slavic language". In the Middle Bulgarian period this name was gradually replaced by the name , the "Bulgarian language". In some cases, the name was used not only with regard to the contemporary Middle Bulgarian language of the copyist but also to the period of Old Bulgarian. A most notable example of anachronism is the Service of St. Cyril from Skopje ( ), a 13th century Middle Bulgarian manuscript from northern Macedonia accord...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4149 ...
