Customer Reviews (7)

1-0 out of 5 stars Preachy and Repetitive
The author could have gotten his message across in 5 pages rather than 350 - speaking of environmentalism, that would have saved some trees...

4-0 out of 5 stars Sustainable Gardening
It covers the basics quite well but tries to oversell some aspects. For example not using concrete etc and trying too hard to save transportation energy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Long winded
I think the book is a little long-winded where simple explanations would do.Some things were not related to sustainability (like how to make a retaining wall) but just general landscaping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice -- Start to Finish
I recently bought this book in preparation for a number of landscaping projects around the house this spring and summer. I've found the guide to be extremely thorough and helpful. It has shown me how to take small steps that add up to making my yard more sustainable and healthy for the family. Included are a number of ready-to-be-implmented, professional quality landscape plans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Timely Advice
A much needed timely volume of practical advice for those on both professional and homeowner levels in the landscape development business. -A must have source for tips that we should all be implementing immediately to mitigate the climate crisis on our personal level! ... Read more

Very good book on business side, not much information about landscaping itself. Very detailled information about opening a business. Costs, overhead costs, and initial capital.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent well balanced book
This book was very well written with good balance between general business advice and more specific landscaping advice. I like that he does not mind going out on a limb to recommend specific brands and types of commercial lawn care equipment. Product Description
Despite the disarming title and a surfeit of coffee table books nowadays on tropical architecture, this profusely illustrated book would reveal layer upon layer of fresh insights and in-depth lessons to the inquisitive admirer of the subject. This is a unique autobiography of an experienced Sri Lankan architect who passionately loves architecture, design and untutored lushness of the natural surroundings. It showcases a wide range of designs, related creative work and covers tropical houses, housing, resort hotels, spas, museums, libraries, monuments, office buildings, interiors, light fittings, furniture and approaches to garden design.Being a combination between a coffee table book and a serious work about the practice of architecture, the reader who invests time to study the material would be amply rewarded. For the committed student of architecture and the deeply curious lover of design there is a wealth of information lucidly explained through drawings, photographs and illustrations gleaned from a lifetime of work including fascinating historical references. It celebrates the joy of teamwork with engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors and humble but talented workers in the construction trade, and inspiration derived from constant social interaction with kindred spirits. This nearly 500-page book is a visual architectural journey through the work and observation of the author, whose experience has been honed by an apprenticeship and dose relationship with the renowned Asian architect Geoffrey Bawa and his partners in the "golden period" of Sri Lankan modernity that began in the 60's.It concludes by touching upon the complexity of global warming, resource depletion and muses upon the need for simplifying our lifestyles while continuing to enjoy the man-made and the natural environment through the creation of tropical simplicity. The renowned Sri Lankan architect Jeoffrey Bawa in a dedication to him said He is the 'First among equals'. ... Product Description
International Expositions are independent kingdoms in their corporate
relation with other countries of the world. They are phantom kingdoms
wherein the people do everything but sleep. They germinate and grow with
phenomenal energy. Their existence is established without conquest and
their magic growth is similar to the mushroom and the moonflower; they
vanish like setting suns in their own radiance. Thousands of neophytes
of every race, creed and color come with willing hearts and hands to do
homage and bear manna to nourish the sinews of a phantom kingdom.

The National Constitution of phantom kingdoms commands that the Spirit
of beauty, refinement, education, culture and frolic shall govern. The
result is that they contain many palaces and shrines decorated with
sculpture and painting and that the earth is studded with fountains and
pools within tropical gardens. Such a Kingdom exists within a wonderful
valley bordering on a great sea. It is surrounded by high velvet hills
of fine contour and by many real cities. As the people look down on this
phantom kingdom from the hill-tops, or from ships sailing on the water,
they see Architecture nestling like flamingoes with fine feathers
unfurled within a green setting.

If building Phantom Kingdoms symbolizes man's highest aims on earth,
then the same is true when building Real Kingdoms. Architecture and the
sister arts are the most reliable barometers in recording human thought.
They are direct exponents of a universal language wherein national
progress is most clearly read.

People who build Phantom Kingdoms look hopefully for universal approval
by all mankind.

Product Description
A landscape which is designed properly is a source of enjoyment for the entire family, it enhances a community and adds to the resale value of your property. Landscape design involves much more than placing trees, shrubs and other plants on the property. It is an art which deals with conscious arrangement or organization of outdoor space for human satisfaction and enjoyment.
Some of its major goals include:
• Organizing and developing the site for maximum use and
pleasure.
• Creating a visual relationship between the house and the site.
• Reducing landscape maintenance to a practical level.
Americans spend tremendous amounts of money landscaping their businesses, homes, streets, parks, schools, etc. Much of this money is wasted, however, because of little or no planning. People cannot understand how to landscape until they know why they landscape.
There are several reasons why people landscape: some think it
improves the appearance of their place; others like to grow plants; still others just want their place to look pretty. Too often these landscapes dominate rather than serve. Masses of plants or other materials in the landscape may take up a large portion of the space and leave little
room for people.
So how does the designer arrange... ... Read more

Product Description
The Architecture & Landscape Gardening

When San Francisco was destroyed by fire in 1906, many people predicted that the city would never be rebuilt. A great number of men and women packed their goods and chattels and hastily bade farewell to the still smoking ruins of a City That Was, firmly believing that destiny had determined that it should remain forever buried in its own ashes.

There was another class of men and women who were optimists. They predicted that the city would be rebuilt, but that it would require from twenty to thirty years.

There was still another class of men and women who knew by observation that it required no more time to build ten buildings than one, provided the Spirit of Energy and Determination existed, to fortify the desire.

We all know now that the Spirit of Energy and Determination did abound in San Francisco--that the City did not remain buried in its own ashes, and that it did not require from twenty to thirty years to rebuild it. The City was not only rebuilt in less than ten years, but, in addition thereto, an International Exposition, surpassing all previous Expositions, was built by its people.
