5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for new psychologists!
I'm a PhD candidate (clinical psych) and got this book based on a friend's recommendation. It is super helpful. It has brief sample case conceptualizations (mainly CBT, but other modalities when appropriate) and step by step treatment plans for different depression and anxiety disorders. It also has worksheets and a CD so you can print and use them whenever you want. It's easy reading, but not just fluff.Strongly recommend to anyone looking for a CBT treatment guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific empirically supported self-help text
This is the best treatment manual I've seen for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It presents a scientifically sound cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol in user-friendly language. Individuals with GAD can either work through it on their own or with a therapist. The Therapist Manual is excellent, too; I highly recommend both.

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical CBT manual for childhood anxiety
This is probably the most practical of all the CBT for childhood anxiety I've read. It not only addresses some of the issues in modifying the treatment, through the use of modules and monitoring of treatment, but takes you through the key components of effective treatment.
The writing style, somewhat informal and easier to comprehend than most similar manuals, takes a little getting used to.

Product Description
The widely acclaimed "father of cognitive psychotherapy" adds a new introduction to the gold-standard book on anxiety disorders and phobias

At the forefront of the cognitive revolution, renowned psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck turned to information processing in order to understand the sources, consequences, and cures of anxiety disorders and phobias. In the first half of this classic text, Beck elaborates on the clinical picture of anxiety disorders and phobias and presents an explanatory model to account for the rich complexity of these phenomena. Cognitive psychologist Gary Emery then details the therapeutic principles, strategies, and tactics developed on the basis of the cognitive model of anxiety disorders and phobias.

This fifteenth anniversary edition of the foundational work on cognitive therapy features a new introduction by Beck, in which he offers an up-to-date appraisal of the current state of cognitive therapy and its application to the treatment of phobias and anxiety. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beck keeps moving on
Aaron Beck and his associates keep providing a world of knowledge about the many disorders that affect us humans, and how to deal with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of the Cognitive Perspective, but has some flaws...
This book offers a great overview of the subject, anxiety disorders and phobias, from a cognitive perspective. The book is divided into two parts, a clinical/theoretical analysis and a practical outline of the application of the theory in therapy, authored by Beck and Emery, respectively.

The book accomplishes its aim of laying down the fundamentals from a cognitive perspective, but does have some flaws.First, much of the anecdotal evidence is just that--anecdotal.Specific studies aren't often mentioned, especially in the second part of the book. Additionally, the book does not address the importance of approaching psychological topics from multiple perspectives. That is, the book does not inform the reader of the other perspectives. So, if you take a more biologically-oriented perspective towards behavior and psychopathology, it is difficult to not take much of the book with a grain of salt. All in all, however, it is a good overview of the cognitive perspective on the issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful - for patients as well as therapists
I picked up this book years ago (before getting therapy for my own anxiety disorder) and quickly gained much insight into the many variants of phobia and anxiety disorders. The explanations are clear, allowing laypersons as well as experts a good level of understanding.

While the book is definitely geared toward therapists interested in learning Beck's cognitive therapy approach, it is certainly useful to any patient or relative who is confronted with such problems -- above all the first half of the book!I really appreciated not being talked down to as in so many patient-oriented books.

Beck opens with an overview of everyday experience of fear and anxiety.Next, he describes the adaptive purpose of anxiety responses ("fight or flight") putting anxiety disorders on a dimension with normal behavior. He continues on to discuss the difference between "normal" and "pathological" forms of anxiety, addressing the major symptoms and thought patterns associated with clinical forms. He then gives an overview of clinical anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder,post-traumatic stress disorder, atypical anxiety disorder, phobic disorders (of which there are many kinds), agoraphobia, social phobia and simple phobias.

He then presents his cognitive model of threat reactions and in-depth chapters focussing on anxiety disorder clusters ("Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder", "Simple Phobias", "The Agoraphobic Syndrome", and "The Evaluation Anxieties" social phobia and social anxiety). The second part of the book is devoted to his principles and strategies/techniques of cognitive-behavioral therapy.

The fact that new editions of this book have been published every few years over the past 2 decades is a tribute to its usefulness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beck's Anxiety Disorders and Phobias - Cognitive Perspective
Every day, veterans of the Vietnam War commit suicide in deep depression. With the United States almost continually cutting its Veterans Administration budget, you would think that the V.A. would give up, butbooks like those of Beck help it treat and cure depression and anxiety. The Cognitive Therapy uses Socratic questioning, training people to ask whythey feel sad or anxious, what their answers mean, to substitute moreeffective coping thoughts for ineffective thoughts and wrong ideas(illogical ideas, like "everybody is against me," "I'm bornto fail," etc.).Patients record in diaries or logs what eventstrigger these wrong thoughts and learn to instantly respond with otherthoughts and actions. This is one of the greatest books in psychology andpsychiatry, and should be read by the young people of all ages (many ofwhom are depressed) as well as the older ones. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for therapists
As a psychologist specializing in treating anxiety, I found this book very helpful. It is an accademic text and aimed at professionals instead of the general public. With that said, it is very easy to read and gives great advice and information. The one area I found really interesting and helpful was the authors have compared many different treatment modalities for anxiety to see which is the most effective. These treatments range from CBT, EMDR, Personal construct theory, etc. This easy to read book is a must for any therapist treating clients suffering from anxiety. It's also fascinating from a researchers point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real help for mental health sufferers!
Susie Macomber's book "Into Fear and Back" is heartfelt and touching, and so much more! It shows how very devastating emotional disorders are to those experiencing them and everyone around them. And IT SHOWS HOW TO OVERCOME such emotional disorders! The book contains new information on the REAL cause of emotional disorders which is not a chemical imbalance in the brain but rather an electrical malfunction in the nervous system. She tells how common foods and supplements can repair the nervous system so that you can recover from so many emotional disorders (anxiety, depression, bipolar, and even schizophrenia).
I know for a fact personally how impacting these disorders can be. I've had a lifelong battle with severe generalized anxiety. Six years ago doctors started me on just a couple medications, just to help me get calm and be able to sleep. But in time those medications started to not work as well, so they added more. . . and more. . . and more.
Here's a partial list of what medications I've been on over the last 6 years;
Ambien, AmbienCR, Lunesta, Gabitril, Propranolol, Indomethacin, Isometh/APAP/Dichlor, Baclofen, Hydroxyzine Pamoate (aka Vistaril), Meloxicam, Promethazine, Topamax, Hydrocodone, Mirtazapine (brand name Remeron), Prednisone, Doxepin (aka Sinequan or Adapin)and Cymbalta (which made me suicidal).
This time last year my family and I were preparing to go on a fabulous 2 week family vacation to the ABC islands. But I was so heavily medicated I had to be pushed by wheelchair through the airport, 15 different types of medication with me at all times, I could barely even put a sentence together. Shortly after that trip I started trying to put into practice what Susie Macomber has written in her book. Today I am drug free for the last 4 months, no small feat considering the many and varied heavy medications I had been taking for the past 6 years. I can honestly say my life and my family's life is infinitely better for having taken her advice and putting it into practice. My only regret is not having it sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raquel
I have read the book and think it is wonderful. So much of it makes sense about our nerous system and even the electrical part of it.I have experienced ( on a smaller scale) some of the very samethings the author did.I have also put some of the things into practice and after only a week I can tell a difference.I also appreciate it because it lets me know there are other people experiencing the samethings and that there is help! This is a must read for everyone because either ourselves or someone we know are experiencing depression or anxiety or both.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent firsthand account and a remedy for anxiety/depression
This book is an easy read; a real page-turner.Susie recounts how she suffered unspeakable torment, which she describes effectively, step-by-step, in a gut-wrenching tale with a happy ending. It's as if you are experiencing her pain right along with her, and later, her joy because of the good outcome she achieved. To have had a physical cause for her psychiatric/psychological illness seemed impossible to the medical community, but her hard-won solution vindicated her premise that she was not mentally ill - though her major symptoms were mental. How many thousands of others have been misdiagnosed and rendered zombie-like with little or no amelioration of pain?

I highly recommend this book to anyone connected in any way to the mental health field. It contains informative facts about our marvelous bodies and the often-overlooked crucial electrical function of the nervous system, affecting every cell in the body. Sufferers will appreciate the insights offered, and may find a solution or at least better understand loved-ones who suffer. This book will stay in my library. ... Read more

Fears in young children are a part of normal development, as is evidenced by numerous studies that demonstrate that approximately 90% of American children have at least one fearful reaction between the ages of 2 and 14. Product Description
Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy and Postpartum earns its important place in the literature by detailing our current understanding of the course, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric illness during pregnancy and postpartum, including breast-feeding—a top priority today because we now know that active maternal psychiatric illness during pregnancy and postpartum can exert long-term negative effects on child development and cause significant morbidity for the mother.

In just five concise richly informative chapters, the nine distinguished contributors to Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy and Postpartum dispel prevailing beliefs and offer invaluable guidance in treating women during pregnancy and postpartum:

  • Course of Psychiatric Illness During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period—Despite the enduring belief that pregnancy is a time of emotional well-being for women, emerging data show that pregnancy is instead a time of increased vulnerability to psychiatric illness.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy—Though the use of psychotropic medications during pregnancy and postpartum raises concerns, the accumulating data support the use of certain SSRIs/tricyclic antidepressants, especially when balanced against the risk to both mother and child of depression during pregnancy.
  • Management of Bipolar Disorder During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period: Weighing the Risks and Benefits—Although the onset of bipolar disorder (BP) tends to occur during women's reproductive years, surprisingly little is known about the impact of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, breast-feeding, and menopause on the course and treatment of bipolar disorder.
  • Postpartum Mood Disorders—Women experience a dramatic increase in their risk of developing severe psychiatric illness during postpartum for a full year after delivery. Often overlooked, postpartum disorders must be identified and treated as early as possible to reduce the mother's risk for recurrent and treatment-refractory illness and the child's risk for long-term development problems due to the detrimental effect of maternal depression.
  • Use of Antidepressants and Mood Stabilizers in Breast-feeding Women—This expanded clinical appraisal of the literature on antidepressant and mood stabilizer use in breast-feeding women shows that additional detailed pharmacokinetic investigations are urgently needed to enhance our understanding of nursing infant exposure and the role(s) of pharmacogenomics in determining infant exposure.

Meticulously referenced and remarkably succinct, Mood and Anxiety Disorders During Pregnancy and Postpartum provides critical information about the course of illness during pregnancy and postpartum to help guide effective individualized treatment decisions-decisions that are ultimately based on the patient's wishes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Work, Takes Time, butWORKS
All I can say is that this book is fabulous. However, only for the diligent. If you are someone who is committed to changing- and actually will follow through, this is the book for you. It has taken me over 4 months, and I am still only 2/3 done with the book.It is not a quick fix and will not be something you can fly thorough. It is amazing, and has changed my life in the most amazing way.I have recommended it to so many people.

5-0 out of 5 stars best anxiety workbook ever! a must have!
This book changed my life. If you want results, I would certainly grab a copy and do all the helpful exercises. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars After 20 years of searching, finally an answer.
I have struggled with a phobia for nearly 20 years. I have tried everything to heal it, from popular audio programs(think late night infomercials) to eft to changing diet to just trying to muscle through it, to cognitive therapy, to hypnotherapy, to YOU NAME IT. I have tried it. This book HAD MY ANSWER. Really and truly, this book healed my phobia. I still get anxiety, but I don't fight it now. I'm practicing every day and shocking myself how much more calm I am, not only with my phobia, but with my life! This book has saved my life. I can't thank the authors enough!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Mindfulness & Acceptance Workbook for Anxiety
This product didn't help me.I find her voice too abrupt and without authenticity, like she was reading unfeelingly from a page instead of thinking about what she was saying. In the first part she asks us to breathe naturally, just noticing how we breathe, but she guides the speed of our breath by saying "in, out, in, out" rather quickly right after that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Acceptance is the beginning
As a mindfulness psychotherapist and author of 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation', I welcome this book. The problem is always in how we relate to our inner traumas and painful emotions. Do we accept them and give them our full attention or do we react out of habit with aversion and resistance? Acceptance is not about giving in and resignation, but about the first step in choosing to form a real relationship with our suffering based on openness of mind and heart. ... Read more

Product Description
The Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-IV (ADIS-IV) is a structured interview designed to assess for current episodes of anxiety disorders, and to permit differential diagnosis among the anxiety disorders according to DSM-IV criteria. The ADIS-IV also provides sufficient information to permit functional analysis of the anxiety disorders. In addition, sections to assess current mood, somatoform, and substance use disorders are included because of their high comorbitidy rate with anxiety disorder and because the presenting symtomatology of these disorders is often quite similar to that of the anxiety disorders. The ADIS-IV also contains screening questions for psychotic and conversion symptoms and familial psychiatric history.A more detailed section is included to ascertain the patient's medical and psychiatric treatment history. Finally, with the exception of Axis II disorders, the ADIS-IV permits the use of the DSM-IV multiaxial system. The Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-IV: Adult Version (ADIS-IV-L) contains all of the sections included in the ADIS-IV.However, unlike the ADIS-IV, the ADIS-IV-L has been designed to establish past (lifetime) diagnoses as well. The ADIS-IV-L also contains a Diagnostic Timeline to assist in the determination of the onset, remission, and temporal sequence of disorders.

The Clinician'smanual has been developed to accompany both the ADIS-IV and the ADIS-IV-L.Because theADIS-IV is designed for the detailed examination of anxiety disorder and related problems, it will be of most value for research and clinical applications directly related to these problem areas.

This item includes both the Clinician's manual and the Adult Client Interview Schedule. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and overly complex interview schedule
This is the third diagnostic interview schedule I've used (the other two were the DIS and the SCID), and it came highly recommended as state of the art for anxiety disorders and related diagnoses. In attempting to implement it, however, our research team found it not logically ordered, confusing and unnecessarily difficult (e.g., the developers have fondness for using multiple 9-point scales for rating symptoms, without fully defining either anchor points or cut-offs).I'm not sure how people really use this instrument, but as for us, we've gone back to the SCID, which is much clearer and easier to use.If you are intent on using it, I would recommend getting special training in its use (including, presumably, which bits of it to ignore). ... The Heal-Your-Anxiety Workbook gives readers a personal understanding of their anxiety issues and triggers. The book will have an attractive look and feel and distinguish it from clinical titles on the shelf. Exercises help readers explore what the underlying causes of their anxiety are, who and what trigger these causes, and how they can effectively cope with their emotions. The exercises and introductions give readers information and insight with a light clinical touch, the attractive packaging makes readers feel they are treating themselves—not an illness or condition.

The book will include approximately 8-10 chapters which will address the emotional/interpersonal facets of anxiety. Exercises such as worksheets, reflective questions, and meditations will help readers determine underlying causes of their anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
Before purchasing this workbook; my understanding of what the general term "anxiety" encompassed was very limited. This workbook provided an awareness in me of how great the scope of anxiety is and the vast effect it has on my life. Working through this workbook has given me a wealth of knowledge about the variety of anxiety disorders and which physical and mental habits in my lifestyle contribute to this issue. The information and direction provided in this workbook has given me tremendous relief and hope! In just a matter of weeks, since purchasing this book and following it's advice, I have noted a marked improvement in the level of anxiety in my daily life. Learning that anxiety disorders can be managed through methods of change in behavior and thought, versus years of psychological and/or pharmaceutical therapy was a great relief!
I highly recommend this book and am purchasing six more copies for the two siblings, two nephews, a niece and my mother, who also suffer from anxiety. I believe that the lives of my loved ones will be greatly improved by the information provided in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, if not the best I've found for anxiety so far
Having gone through an incredible amount of research and reading on this topic over the last couple of years to help myself through anxiety, I have to say this is one of the most approachable and informative books I've found.I appreciate the format of the book, the fact he doesn't push pills, rather discouraging use of them in favor of conquering the anxiety, the relatable examples of people with anxiety (recognized myself in some unexpected ways through those examples) and the way he breaks down the different kinds of anxiety. The exercises are helpful. He is realistic that anxiety can be conquered but it requires maintenance so we don't fall back into bad habits (which is so true), and he provides excellent guidelines (a relapse prevention plan) to staying anxiety free in the long run (which not all books cover). He also covers the importance of nutrition, exercise and what happens in our brains when our anxiety is peaked which was helpful and it helped me (especially the nutrition part). Like the editorial review stated, the book itself is nice to handle and is very conductive for use as a work book as it opens flat.It is not at all overwhelming, it has just the amount information needed (and maybe a little more).I highly recommend it, renewed it from the library three times and I have been reading it and using it and am planning to buy it.I have found the book to be very valuable, helpful and just what I needed. So much so, I felt compelled to sign on and specifically write a review for this book, because I would like other people to benefit from it too or at least give it a try. Definitely give it my full recommendation. ... Read more

Product Description
We like to think of childhood as a carefree time, but for the many children with anxiety disorders it's anything but. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common anxiety disorders in children. It causes intense worry and anxiety that can disrupt emotional, academic, and social development. The good news is that GAD is highly treatable and children can be taught to manage and even overcome it.

Child psychologist, Timothy A. Sisemore specializes in helping anxious children and in I Bet I Won't Fret he gives kids fun and engaging exercises to help them relieve anxiety and worry symptoms, change anxiety-inducing self-talk, and communicate about their feelings. These activities can be done on their own or as part of a therapy program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful - lots of activities....
My 11 yo son, who has Asperger's Syndrome, is working through this book. His worries range from not getting enough sleep to asteroids hitting earth, or germs on his hands, or global warming's effect on snow, and so on."I Bet I Won't Fret" is a very useful book on many levels.

First, the fact there is a book designed just for kids to work on anxiety helped my son believe me when I said, "Many kids have anxiety, it's not just you."It was less stressful just to know and believe he wasn't alone.

Second, it is written so that kids can do it independently, they set up their reward (it is a behaviorial approach and so includes the idea of rewards for working through the book) with their parent and then can do the exercises independently.I'd say 4th/5th through middle school.

Third, there are a variety of activities to choose from - learning to recognize stressors, analyzing how others handle worries, changing self-talk, developing an anti-anxious plan, relaxation and breathing, problem solving, talking back to worries, and so on.This is helpful because every child is different, and some strategies will be more useful than others for any given child. There are bound to be a few real gems for any child in this book.

I would definitely recommend going over the exercises with your child, however, for the insights you can gain, and also to model your own responses to the questions or examples.

The author says most kids with anxiety disorders benefit from seeing a counselor, and that this book is intended as a companion to therapy so that parents can help their kids at home.We are not seeing a counselor since I am still looking for one who is experienced with Asperger's Syndrome, but even working through it independently, my son has made some gains.
