5-0 out of 5 stars This is simply a good book
I use this book at school for a class called "golf course organization and maintenace." It is geared directly to golf courses. The fact of the matter is that it covers every imaginable aspect of golf course maintenance and operations, and I do mean everything. In my opinion there is no other book more valuable for persons training to be golf course superintendents. If your already a superintendent I'm sure it would still be a wise decision to purchase this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the Beginning Greenskeeper
A couple of years ago, I purchased a small golf course in California. I knew nothing about how to keep a golf course in good shape much less improve it. When my superintendent quit, I was up the proverbial creek. I turned to this book for help.It is a great book for those who have had minimal or no exposure to how to keep up the various parts (green, tee boxes, fairways, rough, bunkers, etc.) of a golf course. While I probably won't act as superintendent for very long, I feel armed now with basic greenkeeping knowledge, and it is recommended (and soon to be required) reading for all of my course and clubhouse workers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good. VERY Good.
While perhaps limited to the basics, Witteveen's text is well organized and comprehensive enough to assure that I'll achieve my professional goal of being promoted from Assistant Greenskeeper to Head Greenskeeper within 6 years. In fact, in my opinion, it's on par with Chuck Shick's seminal treatise on the subject. One nitpicky point is that the treatment of cinch bugs, manganese, nitrogen and gophers (and other varmint menaces to the golfing industry) is far too brief. Also, more advanced topics such as the theory and practice of inventing your own type of grass would be welcome. Overall, though, it is top notch!

3-0 out of 5 stars No Magic Here
This book is best suited for the first-time greenskeeper or a greenscommittee member. It contains basic processes such as top-dressing andstays away from specifics like optimal mower height settings for greens. Inaddition, this book stays away from prescribing remidies for such things asexcessive thatch buildup or constant fungus problems. If all you want arethe very basics in management practices then buy this book. If you aresearching for innovative and detailed turf management applications then youwill need to supplement this book with other references. ... Read more

Product Description
This luscious cookbook -- full of glorious recipes for making the most of extra-virgin olive oil -- is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. In 1991 Nan McEvoy planted 1,000 olive tree seedlings on her ranch in Northern California. Today, 18,000 trees later, McEvoy Ranch is highly respected for its fine extra-virgin olive oil. Also producing lavender and honey, and maintaining an extensive kitchen garden, the ranch -- entirely organic -- has evolved into a virtual paradise, replete with heirloom vegetables, fruits, and olive groves as far as the eye can see. With this wealth of ingredients, ranch chef Gerald Gass has created more than 70 recipes combining extra-virgin olive oil with the best the garden has to offer. Comforting soups of winter squash with honey and sage; hearty pasta dishes with olives and tomatoes; savory pork tenderloin flavored with red cherries and spices; crunchy lemon biscotti -- these olive oil-infused recipes are simple to prepare and draw on the fruits of nature as their main ingredients. Stunning photographs of the olive groves, gardens, and recipes make The Olive Harvest Cookbook a lovely gift for anyone who has ever dreamed of living off the land in their own little piece of Eden. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful cookbook
I love this cookbook. The stories about the McEvoy Ranch are very interesting and there is a lot of information about olives and how they are used and crushed. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous, it makes you want to cook every dish.

5-0 out of 5 stars California Dream Come True
If you love the taste of wonderful food and desire the health benefits of true organic olive oil, this book is for you. If you also appreciate beauty, you will relish the sensuous full-color photographs that testify to the remakable people who are making this California dream come true.
Owning this book lets you share in this rich adventure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent.
First off, the recipes I've made so far were all delicious, clear directions and accurate time estimations.

Three complaints:
1.OK, I get it! The McEvoy Ranch is fabulous.Stop selling "the Ranch" on every page.Very tiresome and ended up feeling like I bought an expensive brochure for. . . you guessed it:the Ranch (and some San Fran area restaurants).

2.No calorie or nutrional information. If you are going to take the opportunity to sell me on your Ranch and your friends' restaurants (on nearly every page), at least pretend you care about the reader and include this useful information.I'm no slave to the calorie counter but after you toil thru the ads and self-congratulating genius of buying the wonderous ranch, can the writers condescend to actually assist the reader?Answer:No.

3.The informational section reads like it was taken out of an encyclopedia. Very sterile and boring, basically, no flavor to the writing.

Bottom line:Yes there are some delicious recipes but don't pay full price for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An appetizing cookbook to simply page through
Written by the executive chef of McEvoy Ranch, a place renowned for its organic extra virgin olive oil, The Olive Harvest is a sumptuous cookbook of recipes that showcase the flavors and delights that can be created with olive oil, or that use olive oil as a garnish. Full color photographs by Maren Caruso and explicit step-by-step instructions walk the amateur to professional chef through the steps of creating such delicacies as Lemon-Tarragon Gazpacho; Warm White Bean Salad; Salt Cod with Potatoes, Leeks, and Saffron; Walnut-Olive Oil Cake, and much more. An appetizing cookbook to simply page through, offering succulent and memorable dishes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just average. Unispired and unoriginal.
As an avid chef and artisan who creates my own decorative olive oil bottles, I am immersed in the olive and olive oil culture and I have to say I expected more from this book considering the McEvoy ranch's reputation. I thought the recipes were uninspired and unoriginal and nothing I hadn't seen somewhere before. Who needs a recipe for mashed potatoes or lemon roasted chicken? If you are looking for more unique fare, I would suggest you check out Mustards Grill by Cindy Pawlcyn. In there you will find recipes for butternut squash and goat cheese risotto and salmon roulade with kalamata olive, orange and celery relish.
