This text provides a comprehensive overview of the sociology of aging, and remains the only book of its kind to approach aging from a purely sociological perspective. This new edition is completely updated throughout, with new chapters that discuss the now immanent retirement of the first of the baby boomers, the new form housing arrangements known as semi-independent or assisted living, elder abuse in nursing homes (and quality issues in nursing homes generally), and the long-term problems facing Medicare and Social Security. ... Product Description
Not science fiction, but a scientific fact! This book isthe first common sense scientific explanation of the aging process and"how to" reverse it.The nutrients that we deliver to our cells burn withoxygen and become acidic wastes after giving energy to our body. The bodytries its best to get rid of these acidic wastes through urine andperspiration.Unfortunately, our lifestyle, diet and environment preventour body to get rid of all the wastes that it generates.Gradually, theseleftover acidic wastes accumulate somewhere within our body.Since acidcoagulates blood, the blood circulation near the waste areas becomes poor, causing all kinds of degenerative diseases to develop. The author definesthe aging process as the accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes withinthe body.According to this theory, the reduction of accumulated wastesis re verse aging. This book explains how some of the adult degenerativediseases are caused by too much acidic wastes, and describes the variousscientific devices and methods to reduce these wastes without any harmfulside effects. These devices and methods are being wid ely used in Japan. Alkaline water makers (water ionizers) have been in existence in Japan formore than 40 years. Many in the alternative health industry of waterionizers, magnet and far-infrared devices regard this book as the mostcomprehensive and up-to-date reference book of its kind in the Englishlanguage. It is a "must read" for all who are health-conscious. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Whang excellent re-discovery, a must read!
After reading different books on non-orthodox therapies, I was amazed about the information exposed in this book (but it wasn't the first time I heard about it).
Mr Whang clearly exposes in his book that aging is due to an acidification condition of the body. He suggest that if we eliminate the excess of acids, we can reverse aging problems and possibly, some health problems.

It seems, that aging, disease and weight gain, have a common factor: acidification of the body.
Our body is an electro-chemical machine that needs alkaline compounds to generate electric energy. The byproducts of this electric generation are acids. The body tries to eliminate the over acidification through different mechanism, and when these mechanism are overloaded (due to the life style of these days), then imbalance symptoms start to manifest and then we call them "diseases".

The approach of classic medicine is to prescribe drugs or other treatments to hide the symptoms of the disease. Basically doctors are trying to "cure" protective mechanism of the body. That have no sense. If you eliminate the causes of those "diseases", and remember that essentially the cause starts as an over-acidification of the body fluids, then you can reverse disease and/or aging. These mechanisms to eliminate acids include changes in the diet, use some supplements and use electric devices to help to reinforce the body's natural mechanisms.

Personally, I have emailed Mr Whang to help to expand the information he explained in his book. There are tons of other authors that you can read to increase the information contained in the book.

I give 5 start to this book due to the simplicity and clearly explanation of the information.
I really recommend to anyone interested in the science of aging and health.

To expand the information of this book, I recommend the next lectures:
* The pH Miracle: balance your diet, reclaim your health - Robert O. Young and Shelley Redford Young
* Healing is Voltage: The Handbook- Jerry L. Tennant
* Body electric: electromagnetism and the foundation of life - Robert Becker and Gary Selden

4-0 out of 5 stars Reverse aging
Very nicely researched! Lots of information that most people will understand. I hope Mr. Whang dives deeper into this intriguing concept. I look forward to his next book. He's really on to something!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Alkaline water - just one piece of the puzzle
For a book written in 1990/1991, this is well written. The typesetting and format is easy on the eyes. Sang Whang's spirit in challenging the medical establishment is notable. I agree with many of his thought processes/methods. I read his book after already making alkaline water a major part of my daily existence. Reading his book after the fact has helped clarify various technical details in my mind. The writing style is clear.

Before reading this book I had already learned a lot about water in the past year. And acid-alkaline food values. And acid-alkaline pH. I've watched numerous water documentaries - Blue Gold, Flow, and Water: The Great Mystery (Excellent). Even the most recent James Bond movie - Quantum of Solace - comes to mind -- it's about water privatization. On my reading list are many books about water springs and aquifers.

There is another much cheaper way to create ionized (A fancy word) water. I use a $200 reverse osmosis (RO) system -- but with a calcite cartridge on the last stage. Digital meters shows pH 9.7 (from pH 7+) with TDS of 20 ppm. The RO membrane removes all chlorine and nitrates, etc... too. I'm waiting for a $65 water pitcher ionizer which should give me Magnesium, Sodium and Potassium too.

The author wants to live to 300 years old. The proof is in the pudding. A check of the author's website (Selling Alkalife) shows that he hasn't stopped aging in a significant way - physical appearance (Now 80). That's because the author has missed (2) important aspects of aging - the MIND (Stress more than anything else), and LIGHT (not in relation to the Far Infrared).

To learn about LIGHT's affect on us I recommend a DVD, Exploring the Spectrum, and a book - Health and Light by John Ott. To learn about the mind - National Geographic: Stress - Portrait of a Killer, and check my Amazon profile.

In summary, if one is new to alkaline water - the book is a good read, if not - maybe one could pass on it.
Though I am still absorbing some of SW's comments on ionized air.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very indepth; highly recommended
It has a lot of common sense and data to back up his conclusions. Following his approach will produce healthy results.

4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth Information Piece
This book is like a backbone book on how the human body works and ages as regards alkalinity and acidity. It is written kind of like a fact-book in many places, sometimes going more deeply into the chemical nature of things than "John Q Public" wants to know, but its comforting to see its been investigated on this level. And the author always comes back to explaining in plain terms. I recommend it as a basic book for those interested in alkaline water. But don't buy this expecting to find a "miracle pill" type cure for aging. ... Read more

Product Description

Fred C. Pampel describes how age combines with other components of inequality by comparing the influence of group membership on social inequality before and after the life course transition to old age. He looks at the differences in public policy and how age inequality -- more than the other sources of inequality -- relates closely to government policies and studies other societies in which both age group differences and overall inequality differ from those in the United States. Pampel makes a comparison of the United States with other nations a central component of the book, providing greater understanding of the larger forces that shape old age.

Product Description
Political struggle situated within and between cleavages based on sexuality, gender, and age is examined in this volume. The collection offers cutting edge work that challenges traditional notions of what is political sociology and what constitutes political behavior. Political activism organized around identities of transgender, intersex, lesbian, gay, and old age demonstrates the increasing importance of identity politics for political sociologists and social movements scholars alike.

The authors combined in this volume teach students and scholars of political sociology the continued significance of questions related to the culture wars and art as an agent of change, the role of political opportunity and threat in social movements, transgender and intersex political activism, the advantages and disadvantages of late-life liberal political activism, and how everyday life or just living constitutes social movement activity. The readings raise important questions regarding the intersection of sexual minority, race, and gender. Additionally, the readings explore "identity politics" from the vantage of several different contexts using a variety of methodological approaches and theoretical views. The authors hope this volume will stimulate other political sociologists and social movement scholars to further explore political behavior that is based upon and motivated by some of the most intimate aspects of our lives. ... Product Description
This study demonstrates a textual approach to analyzing policy documents to establish a method of study applicable to any social policy documents. This method should be analytically adequate to this kind of material and of critical interest both from the standpoint of substantive policy areas (here, policy on ageing and "the aged") and the broader standpoints of democratic practice, social stratification and the emancipatory possibilities of social theory. This study should interest policy analysts, critical discourse analysts, sociologists and social gerontologists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text book!
I got this textbook for my psychology of aging class and I loved it. It covers all the different physiological and psychological aspects that tend to either decline or stay the same with age following a dual theory point of view. What I liked about this text book is that it is laid out in a very clear way, and the text itself is very easy to understand. Following each chapter there is a summary of the main points covered in the chapter and some questions for thought, both of which are very helpful when trying to memorize concepts. All in all I really like this text, especially when I compare it with another textbook that I used for my kinesiology class. Some of the same concepts were presented in both books, but my kinesiology textbook was so wordy, that I tended to loose myself while reading it. This one is straight to the point with just enough information to help the student and not confuse him/her further. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Caring for yourselg and your aging parents
A must read for the young generation, too bad it was not available when my parents were old. My daughter has raised some poignant ideas and questions , since she read this book. Give it to your children, they will appreciated later in your life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Totally Satisfied
This book would be very good for someone with a parent just starting into the elder care system. If your parent is already in the system and you are feeling very frustrated, guilty or generally upset with the situation it is not much help.I thought it would focus more on the "Yourself" and less on the parents. The focus was the parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Caring for Yourself While Caring for Your Aging Parents, Third Edition: How to Help, How to Survive is a super resource that covrs so many aspects ofthe aging process of one's parents. It handles many situations and instructs and advises appropriate steps to take.

It talks from many points of view.It deals with sibing issues and how to keep things reasonably fair even if oe sibling is not in the living area of the aging parent while one is nearby. It coers the only child's perspective. Most of all it illustrates proper and improper conduct. This gets you to think about your own situation and how to better handle it.

Most important of all, this wonderful resource has a Department of Aging Directory which will help get you started when you feel overwhelmed. It also makes the caregiver think deeply about his or her own future and being part of a loving environment.

This is certainly a resource you want to keep around during difficult times. It is definitely a difference maker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Claire Berman Speaks to My Heart
Claire Berman's book speaks to my heart. As the child of an aging parent, I have come to realize that the difficulties I face as a caregiver are at least as much, if not more, emotional than physical. Her stories, whether directly related to my circumstances or not, address my raw emotions and help ease the pain.

Her personal style of writing is unusually apt for those who are a parent's caregiver. She addresses care for aging parents from the perspective of a person who has made her own mistakes and learned from them. She writes as a friend rather than an impersonal "expert." I recommend this book for anyone who faces this demanding task.
