Product Description
In this book Charles Mwalimu explores viable grassroots representation mechanisms in African constitutions in order to positively integrate indigenous and modern systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. A comparative study method is used to examine the constitutional principles of chieftaincy and local government and their impact on human rights. To establish and prove lack of positive integration Mwalimu connects this failure to poor constitutionalism, development and stultified growth and human rights violations. This book proposes remedial actions to build nondiscriminatory constitutional regimes eradicating violations of human rights. ... Read more

This book addresses the new role of the state in supporting the private sector in Africa and Asia. The book starts from the premise that governments have lost their previous roles of direct control and regulation, and then examines their new set of roles within a 'free' market. It examines these new roles and whether or not the agencies charged with the task have the capacities to deal with these new expectations. ... Read more

Product Description

The revolutionary political upheavals in Africa in the early 1990s continue to have an impact almost two decades later.  Drawing on original interviews, this book argues we must look to the defining period of transition, and the workings of the transition governments, to understand how politics in these countries changed since the fall of dictatorial one-party states.  Transition governments leave legacies with respect to the relevant political players and their strategies, the institutions of government, and the nature of the political agenda.  These legacies are apparent in Benin, which successfully transitioned to democracy, as well as Togo, which failed to democratize.

Product Description
During the independence era in West Africa(1958-1984) many nations embarked on ambitiousprograms aimed at rejuvenating their traditionalarts. These programs were realised through newcultural policies such as authenticité, with musicbeing a prime focus. In the 1960s West Africangovernments created dozens of orchestras throughoutthe region. They paid the musicians a salary, boughtthem musical instruments, and instructed them to"look at the past" for inspiration. Herein lies thefoundation for such famous orchestras as Bembeya Jazzand the Super Rail Band, groups who were at thecentre of a cultural renaissance which inspired thewhole continent. This book examines the majororchestras and musicians of the independence era, andexplains the role of the government and griots in thecreation of the new musical styles. The text issupported through biographies of musicians, descriptions of traditional musical instruments, andextensive discographies of African recordings. ... Read more

Product Description

With independence from colonial rule, Africans had hoped for liberty, prosperity and a new beginning.Instead, they have experienced have brought nothing but economic misery, famine, senseless civil wars, wanton destruction, flagrant violations of human rights and brutal repression. Africa Betrayed is a powerful attack on the dictators who have ruined an entire continent.Dr. Ayittey writes devastatingly on the horrors of black neo-colonialism, arguing that it is naive for commentators to blame Africa's misery on external factors: African leaders have betrayed both the just aspirations of their countrymen and Africa's indigenous political systems, which in no way endorse tyranny. He argues that a second liberation struggle is beginning throughout the continent - one that will sweep away the kleptocracy and rediscover the African traditions that have endured throughout the horrors of both white colonialism and black neo-colonialism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Depressing Description of Current Conditions
I was a geographic specialist concerned with the mapping of Africa from 1964 to my retirement in 1998. I well remember the high hopes we once had that the newly freed Africans would be able to develop and join the developed world on equal terms. The author, of African heritage himself, has covered in great detail what went wrong. Resulting in the current anarchial state of affairs, with international and civil wars, ethnic cleansing, and economic ruin. With the end of the Cold War and the cutting back of aid from the First and Second Worlds, the Third is greatly the worse for it. This is a dam sad book and I never could finish it. ... Read more

Product Description
Natural resource governance is central to the outcomes of biodiversity conservation efforts and to patterns of economic development, particularly in resource-dependent rural communities. The institutional arrangements thatdefine natural resource governance are outcomes of political processes, whereby numerous groups with often-divergent interests negotiate for access to and control over resources. These political processes determine the outcomes of resource governance reform efforts, such as widespread attempts to decentralize or devolve greater tenure over land and resources to local communities.

This volume examines the dynamics of natural resource governance processes through a range of comparative case studies across east and southern Africa, in an effort to better understand the factors that account for the different outcomes of reform efforts in different contexts. These cases examine issues such as land tenure, of tourism development, and wildlife conservation, and participatory forest management, and are drawn from the work of both academics and field practitioners from across the region. ... The Horn of Africa, the scene of Somali Nationalism, is the vast, arid triangle lying against the Indian Ocean and contains French Smaliland, the Somali Republic made up of the former British and Italian Somalilands, and those substantial parts of Kenya and Ethiopia in which Somalis live. Somali nationalism feeds, as does that of other African and Asian peoples, on the concept of self-determination, and aspires to the political unification of all this territory of some 374,000 square miles into a single "Greater Somalia." ... Product Description
Onwumechili provides an exciting perspective on African military coups, and reminds us that democracy is not synonymous solely with Western societies. Instead, democracies existed in traditional Africa where the military's role was clearly defined and limited. Thus, as Professor Onwumechili argues, the modern African military is a deviant institution. He also delves into ways to prevent military coups and his case studies provide persuasive arguments in favor of the effectiveness of his suggestions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Analysis but brief
I just read the book and it fills a huge void in the area of military and politics in Africa. The book does quite well to chronicle the litany of military coups in the continent as well as other threats to democratization. However, I find the book quite brief and this should not have been the case. One finds himself/herself asking for more particularly because the information is presented in an entertaining style. In fact, the author's predictions about democratization and the military rings true at the moment. However, the book's recommendations about how to contain the military appears theoretically adequate but I fear they may not be practical. In any case, African policy makers may do well to consider the book's recommendations since other strategies for containing the military have failed. ... Read more

Product Description
Heterosexual Africa? The History of an Idea from the Age of Exploration to the Age of AIDSbuilds from Marc Epprecht's previous book, Hungochani (which focuses expli citly on same-sex desire in southern Africa) to explore the historical processes by which a singular, heterosexual identity for Africa was constructed—by anthropologists, ethnopsychologists, colonial officials, African elites, and most recently, health care workers seeking to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This is an eloquently written, accessible book, based on a rich and diverse range of sources, that will find enthusiastic audiences in classrooms and in the general public. Epprecht argues that Africans, just like people all over the world, have always had a range of sexualities and sexual identities. Over the course of the last two centuries, however, African societies south of the Sahara have come to be viewed as singularly heterosexual. Epprecht carefully traces the many routes by which this singularity, this heteronormativity, became a dominant culture. A fascinating story that will surely generate lively debate Epprecht makes his project speak to a range of literatures—queer theory, the new imperial history, African social history, queer and women's studies, and biomedical literature on the HIV/AIDS pandemic. He does this with a light enough hand that his story is not bogged down by endless references to particular debates.Heterosexual Africa?aims to understand an enduring stereotype about Africa and Africans. It asks how Africa came to be defined as a “homosexual-free zone” during the colonial era, and how this idea not only survived the transition to independence but flourished under conditions of globalization and early panicky responses to HIV/AIDS. ...
