5-0 out of 5 stars Best SAT prep book on the market
This book presents a unique strategy for attacking the math SAT that is more effective than anything else on the market.Dr. Celenti teaches critical thinking skills rather than formula memorization, which allows students to approach any problem that is thrown their way on test day. This is especially perfect for top students like me, who want so solve the SAT questions that don't fit squarely into the problem types presented by other prep books.By studying Dr. Celenti's material, I was able to achieve a high score (over 750) on the math portion of the SAT.Any serious student should read this book when preparing for the SAT Math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best SAT Math on the market - MUST HAVE
If you only buy one SAT-Math book: this is the one. If you already have other SAT-Math books: buy this one.

The Perfect 800: SAT Math goes beyond the usual techniques given in other such test books: Not only is it complete, it also looks at concepts in depth, seeking thorough understanding, and creating confidence in learning. It teaches the student to think - skill that is lacking in too great extend from the general education. It makes the student competitive. It makes the student succeed.

These analytical thinking skills got two of my closest relatives into MIT, and made them extremely successful once there.

I am glad that Dr. D. Celenti wrote this book, so he can help all capable students achieve their desired goals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
This book will change the way you look at math! No longer is math just numbers and symbols, it's another language which you can master. SAT math is intimidating, but Dr. Dan breaks it down so that you can understand the reasoning behind the problem and get the perfect score. Dr. Dan's method of looking at math as something more than a series of numbers increased my SAT math score by over 150 points!

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Study Tool - Highly Recommended
Dan Celenti delivers a comprehensive study program that develops mathematical expertise while strengthening critical thinking skills that are essential for success on the SAT. Rather than focusing on repitition, this book encourages its readers to approach problems by thinking critically and fosters a far greater level of comprehension and retention than any other study tool that I have used. Now a student at Georgetown University, though far removed from my days of studying for the SAT, the skill set that I acquired through following Celenti's method continues to impact the way that I approach college-level math. The study techniques outlined in this book helped me greatly improve my Math SAT score, and I highly recommend Perfect 800: SAT Math for any high schooler preparing to take the SAT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best pure maths book I used
Over the course of doing an AQA mathematics A Level I purchased around half a dozen books in addition to the ones specified by the college.

I found this book to be by far the best all round pure maths book. Virtually all aspects of the pure maths modules were covered in excellent, relativly (atleast compared to other books) easy to understand detail along with well documented examples.

Most importantly for doing well in exams however is the thousands of well laid out practise questions & answers with about 30 or so normally devoted to each and every aspect along with hundreds of broader past exam questions at various intervals (good for sludging through in lengthy study periods before exams).

It should be known that most (probably all) A Level syllabuses contain modules such as descrete maths, mechanics, statistics etc. which the book does not fully cover.

Overall however I found that by spending many, many long hours going through the thousands of examples and questions provided largely by this book (escpecially in the weeks leading up to exams on pure modules), I was able to achieve an A beyond all my own expectations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Step by Step Guide
The book is a great guide, especially if you aren't entirely sure what you did wrong or what the next step is in a particular problem. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential if you're going to use Saxon Advanced Math
All I can say about this solution manual is that it is ESSENTIAL if you plan on using Saxon Advanced Math. The problems are so difficult that it's very important to have more than just the teacher's edition with only the answers but also this Solutions Manual that actually shows you how to work out the problems.

We homeschooled our kids over a period of years, and Saxon Math, including Algebra 1, was always our choice for math texts.I also teach in a classical Christian school where we use Saxon Math as well.Currently, I'm teaching using Saxon Algebra 2 (2 of my own kids are in the class), as well as Advanced Math.I find that for most students, if they will take the time to read the lesson well, do all of the problems, and then rework any problems they miss then they will achieve a high degree of mastery of the material at hand.

The greatest advantage of Saxon Math is that each lesson provides practice not only for the new problems but also built-in review for every kind of problem the student has previously encountered.Advanced Math is no exception to the rule that Saxon Math texts help students learn math well.

However, there are difficulties with the Advanced Math that don't exist with the previous ones.Personally, I think the book tries to do too much.In the introduction the authors state that it is meant to be a two-year course, and so I have my students do ½ of a lesson per day. This has worked out well so far, but we're still early in the book.

The main problem is that in many of the lessons the book presents 2 or even 3 difficult concepts all in the same lesson. This makes the student's takes much more difficult, even if you only do ½ a lesson per day.

In spite of these deficiencies, if you've used Saxon Algebra 2, then Saxon Advanced Math is probably the next logical step.

2-0 out of 5 stars okay, but less than expected
The Advanced Math book did arrive, but its condition was much more delapidated than expected, cover was quite marred and corners very worn, many pages inside were written on, and an unremoveable sticker was on the front.Yes, it does have the problems and we are using the book, but it clearly is in worse shape than any of our books which we have used for five years.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Do It
We have used Saxon Math from Pre-Algebra on. We are just finishing up Advanced Math and just ordered Saxon Calculus today for next school year. We also use Dr. David Shormann's DIVE CDs along with the textbook. This is a great help for teaching the new concepts in each lesson. As with all Saxon Math texts, repetition is the key, and although thirty problems a day can be daunting, we have found that our son (almost 12 years old) is able to better retain the concepts that way. Our method is to work side-by-side with him keeping an eye on the solutions manual while he is working.

If at all possible, start your student off with Saxon as early as possible. This will give you much needed continuity through the levels, something very valuable for any student who may proceed at a faster pace than Public School.

1-0 out of 5 stars Saxon is the King of Rote.
There are some things that can only be mastered by rote and there are other things for which rote learning is simply hazardous. In this case, mathematics.

First, students who successfully complete the Saxon math cirriculum don't need to worry about not scoring well on standardized tests. If this is your sole or primary concern, this or any other "cookbook" text will do. If, however, you are interested in REALLY learning mathematics, and MASTERING it, you need to abandon this cirriculum before it is too late.

Saxon does not teach you math. What Saxon does is outline a recipe for any given problem, and then has the student plug-and-chug ad infinitum. This is not math. Math is more than rote computation.

Math is not an instrument, like Saxon contends. Mathematics is really more of an art. Does a successful artist/painter master his delicate and difficult art by drawing the same image over and over again?

Students that successfully complete this program will be left with the false impression that they have mastered mathematics when in fact they have not. They will be in a for a rude awakening when encountering higher mathematics, especially mathematics in which theory, if not necessarily trumpeting application, is equally balanced with application. You can guess as much when Saxon writes in his Algebra 2 text: "It is important to understand why we do things in algebra, but it is also important not to let the emphasis on understanding interfere with our ability to do." NONENSE! If you know why, then you know how. And the why should always come first.

Unfortunately, there aren't any alternative texts, so far as I know, that I can heartily recommend. So all I can suggest is that the serious student of mathematics look around. I did this for Calculus, and came across three excellent texts by three outstanding authors: Michael Spivak, Tom Apostol, and Richard Courant. Their texts put Saxon's and all the other cookbook texts on the market to shame. ... Read more

Product Description
This book contains a compact, accessible treatment of the main mathematical topics encountered in economics at an advanced level, moving from basic material into the twin areas of static and dynamic optimization. Nearly half of the book is devoted to a survey of univariate calculus, matrix algebra and multivariate calculus. This fundamental material is made vigorous by the inclusion of a variety of applications. The later chapters focus on the Lagrange multiplier technique: when it will work, why it works and what economic insights it yields. The properties of maximum value functions and duality are explored, as are the Hamiltonian conditions for dynamic problems in the optimal control format.Dynamic programming and the calculus of variations are also covered.

Much of the discussion proceeds at a heuristic level and by worked example, but the theorems and proofs required by the most analytical user are also to be found. The underlying message is that the language of mathematics can be productive, giving expression to the ideas and facilitating approaches from which insights flow that may be hard to come by in other ways. The book will be particularly useful for final year undergraduates doing mathematics for economists' courses, and postgraduate students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The title could be improved
I have the entire set of Schaums books. I used this one before starting my PhD studies in Economics. The Math is a great primer to every doctoral level student. The title of book should be 'Advanced Math for scientists, engineers, economists, and every doctoral student'. The book sells itself short by restricting itself only to natural sciences and engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very good review
I got this book to review for my class.. it was really helpful, i had lots of examples and problems and mostly each problem shows off a trick and an important point... i am happy that i got it

4-0 out of 5 stars It is what it is
Good reference for those rare occasions when you need to be able to use a [insert dead Frenchman's name] function.

3-0 out of 5 stars worth the purchase
I used this book as a text for an applied math course. The presentation of the book is well done. The emphasis was on gaining competency through practice and not on proving rigorous theories per se (though some of that is included). The author worked out in detail many example problems that I found to be helpful.

As a caveat, there were MANY typos in the book.A few of the theorems were even stated incorrectly. Some of the answers in the back of the book are incorrect. For at least one homework problem that I know of you are tasked with proving something that is just plain wrong. The end result: lots of wasted time.I found the treatment of linear algebra to be a little outdated; he focuses mainly on properties of determinants and inverses, which these days is not the way to approach applied linear algebra.

I'm more forgiving of these blunders because the book is low priced. All in all it was helpful to me as an aid to learning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Organized

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent supplementary book
I must have bought a corrected version of this book because I did all of the problems and I don't remember coming across too many errors.Or perhaps I'd gone through so many GRE books at that point that I no longer even noticed the errors. In any case, even though I thought this book was a decent source for GRE math questions, there are several reasons why I cannot give it more than 3 stars.

First of all, it's rather slim.I paid the full retail price at a store and I felt that I overpaid. It only took me two nights to complete the entire thing.Second, I agree with the other reviewers who complained that the questions weren't "advanced" enough. They are right -- the book doesn't go quite far enough. For example, the permutations and combinatorial section doesn't include any questions with indistinguishable items.Any book that claims to be a guide to an 800 should include that. Finally, I think the subtitle, "Your Only Guide to an 800" is dishonest.Nova's GRE Math Prep Course is a far superior book, and is, in my opinion, the best guide available for scoring an 800 (check out my review for it).

I think the authors of the book were a bit lazy and complacent, but overall, I thought it was an okay product. It certainly can't hurt you to buy the book and do all of the problems. The more practice you get, the better you will do on the GRE.I prepared a lot and I got an 800 the first time I took the exam.It felt easy and I finished with two or three minutes left on the clock.

1-0 out of 5 stars Abundance of Typos Continue
I purchased this book in September 2010 from Kaplan's website directly, without seeing the reviews here. I've almost finished all of the problems, and all of the statements of the previous negative reviews are still valid. The number of typos in the book suggests that Kaplan doesn't care about the quality of their products or their customers' success on the GRE.Besides the typos, I recognize many of the problems from the Kaplan Math Workbook and the general GRE preparation book. I also agree with a previous review that the book fails to address the main problem with advanced questions--a lack of sufficient time.

I just submitted a review directly to the Kaplan site, but it is not displayed on the book's webpage. I also contacted customer service, but they merely offered to refund my money. They did not mention a willingness to correct the typos. I DO NOT recommend this book if you are looking to boost your score to an 800. If you are searching for practice problems, [...] is a nonprofit website that provides mathematics instruction and practice problems for free. While it isn't directly targeting the GRE, the scope, US K-12+ mathematics, includes many of the same problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother buying this if you want to do well on the GRE!
This book is awful - the answer keys are actually incorrect for some of the sections! How am I supposed to learn anything if the authors can't even double-check their own work? Unbelievable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality: Too Many Errors
Wow.Simply put - way too many errors.Do not buy this book until the errors are corrected.Kaplan has lost a lot of credibility - errors range from simple typos, to text formatting errors, to simply incorrect math.Hard to believe this made it through the editing process. Avoid. ... Read more

Product Description
The material presented in this course covers the medium-difficult to difficult problems on the math SAT and should therefore prove challenging to even the best math students. By going through the intensive drills in this course, students will not only sharpen their skills in solving difficult math SAT questions but will also develop the confidence needed to tackle similarly difficult problems when they encounter them on the actual test.

This video course consists of a 96-minute video tape and a 79-page workbook. The design of the course is based on a thorough analysis of the medium-difficult to difficult problems on numerous math SATs. On the math SAT, problems appear in order of difficulty, with the medium-difficult to difficult problems appearing in the last third of each set of question types -- multiple-choice, quantitative comparisons, and student-produced response questions. An analysis of the medium-difficult questions led to the development of five categories of problems -- shortcuts; tricks, traps, and exceptions; complex problems in algebra and geometry; word problems; and advanced math. These categories are not based simply on areas of mathematics but on similarities of problem-solving skills needed to solve these problems.

The workbook serves as the student's guide to the course. A background information section introduces the student to the course, and then goes on to provide numerous useful tips for taking the SAT, answering the most frequently asked questions about the test. The first section provides the illustrative problems discussed on the videotape and the sample problems to be completed by the student. This section constitutes the core of the course for the student. The second section offers additional problems for the five distinct categories of problem types. These are used to supplement the student's practice and are especially appropriate as homework exercises. Finally, the third section contains annotated solutions to the problems presented in the second section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Text
This is clearly one of Prentice Hall's better efforts. The material in this book is so well developed that it can be used as an additional reference during a precalc course for the algebra element.

Examples are color-coded to show steps. There are lots of sample problems included. The only drawback to this book is the large amounts of photos and drawings that aren't necessary--but these are present in this entire series of math books.
