IMHO
I'm sorry this book is out of print.When I read it the first time I had just moved to New England from southern California.I had been around wood stoves in my life but never really operated one, I just knew I wanted one. Especially since this was the late '70s when fuel was a big deal.Thisbook taught me more about wood stoves and fireplaces than I ever thoughtthere was to know.Not only does it explain exactly why things do whatthey doand make sense to the layman but it tells you the theory so youcan carry that information with you forever.You'll learn about airinfiltration and the migration of air through houses.The light went onabout a lot of things I had noticed but had no clue why it was occuring. The Third World War, August 1985: a Future History
Even though 'dated', it is still an execellent work of writing. And with today's climate: The Russian Republic again flexing it's muscles; The Peoples Democratic Republic of China (aka Mainland China, Communist China), flexing it's muscles and both with large nuclear capabilities, and the Extremists tryng to obtain fission grade Uranium or Plutonium. This is a scenario that is still on the horizon! And, as such is worth reading. When originally published, Primie Minister Margaret Thatcher gave copies away to other Heads of State asking them to read it. And I agreed with her then, and agree with her now.

reads like a real history
An excellent book, the author wove a believable war scenario between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The weapons and tactics were true to what were available at the time and it made fascinating, if scary, reading. ... Read more

Interesting, Authoritative, and I Even Found One of My Ancestors Mentioned In It!
I enjoyed this book, particularly when I found one of my ancestors mentioned in it. He was neither a hero nor one of the bad guys. He was some young kid who was helping move the boat from one place to another, in preparation for a storm if I remember correctly, and the comment about him was something like, "I don't know that man. I think he works for (some name)":)

Oh well, one takes genealogy the way it is. Maybe as he aged, he would have been more memorable.

At any rate, you may enjoy this book if you had ancestors on the Winthrop Fleet of 1630 or if you just like that part of the history of America.

A Good Book But Not Perfect!
I live in Portland and am in the wine business, so of course I own a copy of this book.

The pros:

It does contain a good number of wineries and highlights their history briefly.
The text also contains contact information for a number of wineries, which proves useful.

Cons:

There is a lot of space dedicated to tasting notes on individual wines, my beef with this is that these notes become obsolete quickly.I would have preferred more detail on the history of the individual wineries and producers.

A lot of the information in this book is of use for those looking for a little light reading on NW pinot noir, but it pales in comparison to the amount of information in the Oregon Pinot Camp pamphlet.

Essential for Pinot lovers
An excellent book.The only problem is that the world of wine changes faster then books can keep up.I live in Paso Robles and this book has very little on the exciting things being done with Pinot Noir here.Both Jack's Creek and Windward were worth inclusion, butwere probably just overlooked.Still, it is really essential to have this book if you love good Pinot Noir.
