4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
This book - Grover Sleeps Over - was my daughters favorite book when she was a child.Unfortunately I did not keep the book.My daughter is now expecting her first child and I wanted to get a copy of this for my grandchild. The book was the exact same one, arrived in excellent condition, was packed very well. The seller was wonderful to deal with and the book arrived very quickly.I hope to use them again in the future if other books are needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars read to tatters
My son is autistic, and the year he was 5, we read this book to tatters. The colorful, warming pictures showing the Muppets with familiar comforts of childhood--spaghetti with meatballs, sleeping with a cat, the nightlight, playing with blocks--made this book a hit with a child who will probably never attend a sleepover.I just finished putting yet another layer of tape on the binding today.A household classic!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Neat Book
I think this is a neat book because it tells how Grover is scared to go on his first sleep over.I think all kids are scared when they stay the night away from home for their first time and this book tells about it.This is a good book for a child who is scared to go on their first sleep over.It will teach them that it's not so scary after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
Grover Sleeps Over by Elizabeth Winthrop was one of my very favorite books. It's a great book for pre-schoolers.The main character, Grover, is on the television show Sesame Street. The whole story is about Grover's first sleepover and how he feels apprehensive about it.Grover is worried about eating good cereal and not having a night-light.His mom tells him everything will be fine and to just have fun. This is a wonderful book.I highly suggest you read to a pre-schooler Grover Sleeps Over. This is easily a five out of five stars. ... I love this book for the beautiful story. The author, Elizabeth Winthrop, stays close to exactly how the Bible describes what happened. The illustrations are beautiful--sort of art deco in style, I think, and really give a sense a majesty and peace and wonderment to what is happening. It's a beautiful book both for the words as well as the pictures. 3-0 out of 5 stars An illogical adaptation of a traditional tale
According to the author's note, Journey to the Bright Kingdom is an adaptation of the well-known Japanese folktale, The Rolling Rice Cakes.

In all versions of the original story, an elderly man accidentally drops part of his lunch down a hole in a field. When he hears tiny voices sing out with joy, he deliberately drops the rest of his lunch down the hole. Finally, he puts his ear to the hole, loses his balance, and falls into a magical kingdom inhabited by mice. The mice reward him for his generosity before helping him return home.In some versions of the story, the behavior of the kind and generous old man is contrasted with that of his greedy neighbor, who tries to frighten the mice into abandoning their riches, and is punished for his malice.

Journey to the Bright Kingdom bears little resemblance to any version of the original.A ferryman marries an artist who goes blind, then gives birth to a daughter, Kiyo. One afternoon, the daughter takes a different path home from school and finds herself in a field, where she shares her last bit of lunch with a passing mouse. From that day on, the child stops at the field every day to befriend the mice that share her food. When Kiyo's mother sinks into depression, the girl shares this information with one of the mice, who invites her mother to the field.Kiyo guides her mother to the meeting place, and when they visit the magical kingdom of the mice, her mother's sight is temporarily restored. The mice then give the two a tiny bale that contains an endless supply of rice. The mother instantly recovers from her depression, even though her newfound sight leaves her once she departs from the bright kingdom.

This story is such a dramatic departure from the original folktale that I wonder why the author bothered to mention its origins.

It also doesn't make a lot of sense. The mice claim they are rewarding Kiyo for her generosity, but they have a mountain of rice in their underground kingdom, as well as an endless supply in the magical bale. Why would they bother surfacing to share a child's lunch every day, when they clearly want to keep their kingdom a secret?

I wish the author had thought this through, as the story is tenderly told, and the pencil illustrations are beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing, excellent illustrations
In this excellent book, children's author Elizabeth Winthrop takes the story of Jesus' crucifixion from the gospel of St. Matthew, and, remaining true to the King James Version original, adapts the story for the young reader. Going along with the text is Charles Mikolaycak's wonderful illustrations, which have subdued colors and a style that goes a long way in supporting the text.

Now, this is the unvarnished Biblical text, and the images of a bleeding Christ might be a bit much for very young readers. But, that said, if you want to introduce the young person in your life to the real reason for the season of Easter, then I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Christian Easter
It is a good tool to use to share the Resurrection of Christ with young children. This adaptation stays true to the text of the King James version of the Bible and the illustrator's interpretation of the text is inspiring. ... Read more
