Product Description
Avidly collected and fetching high prices at auction, the Dartmouth Winter Carnival poster is a treasured and tangible artifact of one of the College's most cherished traditions. Here, presented for the first time, is Dartmouth College Library's definitive collection of Winter Carnival posters from 1911 to 2010, celebrating Dartmouth's seasonal bacchanal, sports fest, and social daze. In addition to their merit as markers of changing taste in graphic arts, the posters offer a fascinating glimpse into a century of intense cultural and institutional development. As a sustained collection the posters are nearly unrivaled, to the envy of ephemera collectors. Everything is here, from the high-end, design-informed style of the early years to the pop-culture and annual-theme inspired posters of more recent years. A constant element is the effervescence of those Dartmouth days, tinged with the glow of nostalgia: youth, energy, sex, sports, camaraderie, and dragons.

This colorful and memory-evoking volume also includes a catalogue raisonne giving poster dimensions, artists' names, and other relevant information; charming artistic ephemera (dance cards and programs) from the missing (posterless?) years of 1912 to 1934; and rare photos of the poster selection process. In addition, the book includes an illustrated essay retelling the story of Budd Schulberg and F. Scott Fitzgerald's notorious trip to Winter Carnival; an essay about the art of the posters by noted graphic arts scholar Steven Heller; and a poignant piece by alumna and cultural observer Gina Barreca (class of '79) remembering the posters and the Winter Carnival experience from a student's point of view. This is a wonderful book for alumni, collectors of posters and ski posters, and anyone who has ever been touched by the magic of Winter Carnival. ... Read more

Product Description

The Blind African Slave recounts the life of Jeffrey Brace (né Boyrereau Brinch), who was born in West Africa around 1742. Captured by slave traders at the age of sixteen, Brace was transported to Barbados, where he experienced the shock and trauma of slave-breaking and was sold to a New England ship captain. After fighting as an enslaved sailor for two years in the Seven Years War, Brace was taken to New Haven, Connecticut, and sold into slavery. After several years in New England, Brace enlisted in the Continental Army in hopes of winning his manumission. After five years of military service, he was honorably discharged and was freed from slavery. As a free man, he chose in 1784 to move to Vermont, the first state to make slavery illegal. There, he met and married an African woman, bought a farm, and raised a family. Although literate, he was blind when he decided to publish his life story, which he narrated to a white antislavery lawyer, Benjamin Prentiss, who published it in 1810. Upon his death in 1827, Brace was a well-respected abolitionist. In this first new edition since 1810, Kari J. Winter provides a historical introduction, annotations, and original documents that verify and supplement our knowledge of Brace's life and times.

5-0 out of 5 stars life and travails of an early slave in the North
The biography of the slave captured in Africa in the 1700s begins with his capture and goes on to cover "his adventures in the British navy, travels, sufferings, sales, abuses, education, service in the American war [of Independence], emancipation, conversion to the christian religion, knowledge of the Scriptures, memory, and blindness." Prentiss, who wrote down the slave's story, was a Northern abolitionist. It's impossible to say how the slave Brace's story is colored by this. In the Introduction, Winter points to some known omissions. Brace's Christian faith and knowledge of the Bible seem to begin too early in his story; and with long passages from the Bible liberally and somewhat arbitrarily inserted in the text, intrude to a questionable, and certainly unnecessary, degree. Prentiss was attracted to Brace's life story because of how it could promote his abolitionist views rooted in his Christian faith. Brace was a decent person caught up in events far beyond his understanding or concern. He enlisted to fight in the Revolutionary War mainly to gain his freedom. After being freed for his service, he moved from Connecticut, where he was owned by a cruel slavemaster, to Vermont, where he continued to bear physical and financial difficulties. The facts of Brace's colorful, moving tale can be readily sifted out from Prentiss's extraneous matter--leaving a rare, memorable biography of a slave in the North, whose circumstances and options were considerably different from slaves in the South. The circumstances of Brace's capture in Africa and his time in Vermont in the last years of his life are of particular interest.

Product Description
The first half of the 19th Century spawned one of the most exciting concentrations of artists and artistic innovation in history. The French impressionists opened the door to creative freedoms never before experienced, and a community rich in artistic and intellectual talent coalesced to forever change the direction of art. This book documents more than 150 artists who worked, studied, and exhibited in Paris between 1890 and 1950. Many of them have been completely overlooked by scholars and art historians. Their work encompasses the La Belle Epoque, Postimpressionist, Cubist, and School of Paris movements. More than 375 color images of their paintings document this fabulous cultural explosion, and also present a visual time capsule, showing the populace at work and at play in bars, cabarets, and jazz clubs, even scenes of the artists' own studios. This book has been a labor of love; many years in the making. Collectors, curators, and historians will find it an invaluable tool for understanding the art of this period. By documenting artists who have not been written about for many years, the authors offer insight to their paintings, which can still be acquired at equitable prices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TREASURE CHEST
This book will gratify those art lovers and collectors who have an interest in the artists who appear only in the secondary auctions of Sotheby's or Christies, if they appear in American auctions at all. The authors have provided biographical data, to the extent it may be available, on some of the many fine artists with a Parisian connection, who never had a reputation equal to their worth or lost their reputations through the attrition of time. They are fine artists as the pictures which appear with each biographical sketch suggest, yet they never made the breakthrough which, as any collector or dealer knows, is so much a matter of chance, dependent as it is on many factors outside the control of the artist. Hopefully, the great inflation of prices for contemporary and modern art, will stir interest in those, who like these artists, and those who appear in the second volume in this series, can provide considerable gratification, whether or not one can count on an appreciated selling price. Having seen original works by some of this group, I will attest to the worthiness of their efforts, although they may not match Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne or Monet. For a price often within the range of those collectors who hover at the lower levels of the intermediate market, one can own pictures which will give a lifetime of joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystic Uncle and the Magic Bridge
Mystic Uncle and the Magical Bridge
By Jeffrey Winters
Reviewed by Dee Jordan

I read this book from the standpoint of a parent as well as a writer. At first, I was concerned when the boys were so friendly to a stranger, even agreeing to meet with him at night, but fortunately, the story soon revealed its secrets of the man being from another world. This unlikely pair of friends, one with huge feet and the other with a lemon birthmark--both the butt of teasing at school--were chosen to save Ahnu.

Winters weaves a tale of intrigue, courage, wisdom, and personal growth as these boys are trained to become heroes. Young readers will identify with the zest and zeal that two teens have for becoming involved in a life and death situation and putting aside their own personal fears.

With a cast of characters including Bobby, Jeremy, Mystic Uncle, Olan, Leeb, and Liona, the wise mother, the book takes the reader for a magic ride. They ride animals that are a cross between an ostrich and a horse called furds. It's truly an amazing land with kind and gentle people threatened by three humans who found the magical bridge that connected the two worlds. This book holds one's interest and teaches valuable lessons about life in a very original and imaginative style. To find out how two ordinary boys learned how to use self-control to become extraordinary warriors, I highly recommend reading this book. [...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Mystic Uncle and the Magical Bridge
Mystic Uncle and the Magical Bridge is a delightful mythological fantasy about two boys who encounter both a challenge and an inspiring guide who teaches them confidence, trust, courage, and self-expression.Within the pages of Mystic Uncle and the Magical Bridge, the reader will gain an awareness of the availability of choice and concurrent responsibility, a consciousness regarding the intricacy of human motivation, and an appreciation of decision-making skills.Jeffrey Winters touches upon many of the themes that concern school-age readers including bullies, friendship, anger, kindness, fear, caring, loyalty, and dignity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Combines wonderful fantasy, magic, and action-adventure
In Jeffrey Winters' Mystic Uncle And The Magic Bridge, Bobby and Jeremy are two boys who are recruited by a character called Mystic Uncle to save a parallel world. Along the way they learn about friendship, love, loyalty, and overcoming obstacles, all the while avoidingviolence and using their minds to handle adversity. Original and highly recommended, Mystic Uncle And The Magic Bridge deftly combines wonderful fantasy, magic, and action-adventure, together with an embedded "street smart" message that will help young readers stay safe in the violence so commonplace on today's playgrounds and city streets.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Tale for All Times
It was with a sense of fresh delight that I read Mystic Uncle And The Magical Bridge by Jeffrey Winters. The book hits a home run on several levels. On the surface, it's a great, full-steam-ahead adventure yarn about two boys who help an otherworldly character, Mystic Uncle, save his parallel world. But Winters also knows how to craft a spell-binding tale that sparkles with gems of wisdom carefully placed so that they don't get in the way of the story.

And who better to place these gems than Mystic Uncle, a wonderful, somewhat enigmatic character who wins our hearts on first meeting and stays in our minds long after we close the book. With Mystic Uncle's gentle and patient guidance, the young heroes learn that self defense skills are valuable tools, but brain not brawn is the best way to cope with challenges encountered along the highway of life.

Mystic Uncle And The Magical Bridge will be enjoyed by readers of all ages; but, in many ways, itserves as a cautionary tale for kids that practicing values such as respect, dignity and friendship are the best way to overcome hardships. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Provocative, realistic, readable
This book, unlike most about spirituality and life, reveals insights that are, though perhaps challenging, both moving, realistic and practical. The writer appears to have a connection to people's souls, an ability to relate intimately with our deepest fears, joys and prejudices. Product Description
Author Jeffrey Winter says the following about his work:

Our state of being at peace with the world and with ourselves is in direct relation to our desire for and pursuit of truth. In the introduction to my first book, An Abundance of Life, I stated that my own path has been fueled by what Einstein termed, "A deep desire in one's heart to know God's thoughts," to know what it is that God wants one to do.

As time will accomplish while on life's journey, it has clarified that point. It is not so much determining what it is God wants us to do and then doing it that brings peace, as it is discovering who He wants us to be.

He wants us to recognize that we are His, that we always have been and always will be. That we are, in His eyes, worthy of all blessings which exceed even our highest expectations. This worth grows not out of us, nor any merit we might presume, but out of His view of us, out of His awe-inspiring mercy.

This realization that we are worthy of love and are loved beyond and above all things, is what fuels that which we do. It makes us able to proclaim with and understand St. Paul who said, "In all things, do as unto the Lord…Unto His glory," whatever and wherever those "doings" may be.

In a life such as that, we can confidently meet all things and be risen up as victorious warriors of life. ... Read more

Product Description
Largely ignored for decades, the World Bank increasingly finds itself at the center of an international political maelstrom. Attacked by the Right as the last bastion of socialism and by the Left as an instrument of economic imperialism, the Bank has struggled to adapt to a changing post-Cold War era. Still the world's leading development institution in terms of size and influence, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development's failure to articulate and implement a convincing strategy to reduce world poverty has left it vulnerable to the charge that, at least in its present form, it has outlived its usefulness.

In a book neither funded nor controlled by its subject, leading North American and British scholars critically examine the World Bank. They contend that an institution that has grown to unmanageable proportions through internally driven change cannot realistically be expected to effect its own reform program. All the Bank's previous attempts at self-redesign have failed, and the contributors argue it is beyond reform; it must be reinvented.

Reinvention involves a thoroughgoing and externally controlled process of transformation, starting from basic principles and encompassing three closely related dimensions: operations, or the fit between the Bank's lending program and its development objectives; concepts, its vision of development and anti-poverty strategy; and power, which includes the Bank's relationships with member countries and the wider public, as well as structures of internal governance and accountability. ... Product Description
The art world is only beginning to realize the profound influence the Paris art community of the early 20th century had on what we now identify as "Modernism." Regional groups of figurative painters, from California to Russia and Australia to Scandinavia, absorbed many influences and crossed paths with leading artists who worked in Paris. This important new book highlights the work of 204 newly discovered regional Modernist painters, especially some from Belgium, with carefully researched biographical information about each one. Over 350 color photographs display their dynamic works. These paintings helped t spread Parisian ifluence throughout the world, and often are showcased in galleries today. This pioneer work documents many of the artists for the first time. It is a companion volume to the authors' previous book, Modern Figurative Paintings, The Paris Connection (Schiffer, 2004) which covers a different group of artists and paintings. ... Read more
