Product Description

From his role as FDR’s “negro advisor” to his appointment, under Lyndon Johnson, as the first secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Robert Clifton Weaver was one of the most influential domestic policy makers and civil rights advocates of the twentieth century. This volume, the first biography of the first African American to hold a cabinet position in the federal government, rescues from obscurity the story of a man whose legacy continues to impact American race relations and the cities in which they largely play out.

Tracing Weaver’s career through the creation, expansion, and contraction of New Deal liberalism, Wendell Pritchett illuminates his instrumental role in the birth of almost every urban initiative of the period, from public housing and urban renewal to affirmative action and rent control. Beyond these policy achievements, Weaver also founded racial liberalism, a new approach to race relations that propelled him through a series of high-level positions in public and private agencies working to promote racial cooperation in American cities. But Pritchett shows that despite Weaver’s efforts to make race irrelevant, white and black Americans continued to call on him to mediate between the races—a position that grew increasingly untenable as Weaver remained caught between the white power structure to which he pledged his allegiance and the African Americans whose lives he devoted his career to improving.

A crucial and largely unknown chapter in the history of American liberalism, this long-overdue biography adds a new dimension to our understanding of racial and urban struggles, as well as the complex role of the black elite in modern U.S. history.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who love Hollywood movies
Here is a refreshing change: a Hollywood autobiography (or sort of) written by someone who refuses to take himself too seriously. The result is one of the most engaging memoirs to have come down the pike in quite awhile. Robert Clarke is almost too self-effacing; he is much betterremembered than he thinks. Clarke was never a major star (not even close)but a true-blue working Hollywood actor -- and one with a keen sense ofobservation. Unforgettable as the dog boy in Val Lewton's Bedlam, Clarkewent on to appear in Tim Holt Westerns, played supporting roles (some merewalk-ons) in more prestigious fare and starred in very early televisionswashbucklers. Never boring the reader with endless obscure personaldetails (Clarke, lone among Hollywood survivors apparently, doesn't seem tohave had a horrible childhood), the author recounts working fornext-to-nothing in no-budget B-movies, for Ida Lupino and Jack "justthe facts, ma'm" Webb. and others too numerous to mention. He evenproduced and directed a couple of 1950s sci-fi flicks. All of this isrecounted in engaging fashion and devoid of fake sentimentality. RobertClarke is probably not well-known enough to have been published by RandomHouse -- but that is their loss. Happily, horror specialist Tom Weaverbrought him to Gary and Susan Svehla's Midnight Marquee, one of thesetechnically up-to-par genre publishing houses made possible by newtechnology. It is due to folks like Weaver and the Svehlas that film booksmake such delightful reading these days. ... Read more

Product Description
First published in 1987, The New Oxford Book of Canadian Short Stories was hailed as "a world-class anthology" in The Washington Post Book World and as "a banquet of stories...to be savored and enjoyed over and over again" in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Now, in The New Oxford Book of Canadian Short Stories, Margaret Atwood and Robert Weaver have compiled an updated anthology that surpasses the original in historical and regional balance while providing fiction lovers with another superb collection of works in a handy paperback format.

Featuring forty-five stories, four more than in the first edition, and including new stories by eighteen of the writer featured in the original, The New Oxford Book of Canadian Short Stories offers an engaging survey of Canada's leading writers and finest short stories. But perhaps the most exciting feature is the presence of many new writers, including Thomas King, Carol Shields, Rohinton Mistry, and Dionne Brand, writers who underscore Atwoods conviction that the Canadian short story will continue to grow, mutate, re-seed itself, and flourish. The New Oxford Book of Canadian Short Stories, revised and updated, reflects the increasing diversity of the genre and the growing reputation of a new generation of Canadian writers. It belongs on the shelf of all aficionados of short fiction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An amazing collection
This is truely an amazing collection - incl. stories by Thomas H. Randdall, Alice Munro, Alistair MacLeod, W.D. Valgardson and Neil Bissoondath. Very clever stories that will make you laugh, think and intrigue you. There is a great variation of stories and writers. This is the book that made me get into Canadian writers. It is still one of the best collections of shortstories that I own.
If you like short stories you should also try: Alistair MacLeod - 'Island collected stories', Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) 'Seven Gothic Tales', or 'The Collected Short Stories of Roald Dahl'.

Product Description

Outlining the career of a politician whose two campaigns for the White House helped change the course of American politics, this in-depth study explores the religious convictions of James B. Weaver and the role they played in his political contributions. Offering a panoramic view of some of the great events of the 19th century—the California Gold Rush, the Civil War, and presidential politics, from Abraham Lincoln to the rise of William Jennings Bryan—this insightful and detailed account also sheds new light on the influence of third parties in presidential elections and the federal government’s role in reducing economic hardship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weaver, more than a footnote
During the last quarter of the 19th-century James Baird Weaver, a third party politician from Bloomfield, Iowa, railed at the injustices found in government, big business, banking and transportation. He championed the rights of the veteran, farmer and labor. Although cartoonist Thomas Nast depicted Weaver as an ass, his national campaigns for the presidency in 1880 and 1892, finally found acceptance in the progressive administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Robert Mitchell has done a superb job of bringing James B. Weaver to his rightful place in American politics, which is not buried in the footnotes of some other politician's biography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings to Life a Forgotten Reformer of the Gilded Age
An unexpectedly fascinating account of James B. Weaver, a proud son of Iowa who managed to play a critical but largely overlooked role in many political reform movements of the late 19th century. The real delight of this book is not so much in discovering Weaver himself, who, truth be told, seems to have been rather a self-righteous (albeit utterly sincere) prig, but in the vast tawdry panorama of Gilded Age politics.Mitchell clearly loves the period, and his concise and engaging prose displays his mastery of all its sordid details. As we follow Weaver's political evolution from Democrat to Republican to Greenbacker to Populist (and partly back to the Democrats), we encounter themes that still resonate today, such as the malleable ideologies of the major parties, the pervasiveness of corruption, the shifting politics of race relations, and the excesses of financial capitalism. While only a few kooks still care about temperance or free silver, others of Weaver's highly-principled crusades seem sadly familiar, and the reformers' touching faith in the power of the federal government to promote the welfare of the common man is striking.Readers of the investing class may delight in General Weaver's many failures and scorn the simplicity of his beliefs, but there is a new reformer on the scene who got his start in Iowa . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Iowa Statesman
This is a highly readable, enjoyable, biography about James Baird Weaver, 1833-1912, a statesman from Iowa who always spoke his mind and had some before-his-time ideas about government. He was a member of Congress in the times when debate would get wild and wooly and he went to the point of fisticuffs when another member began hurling personal insult. An editorial by the Des Moines Register about the incident stated that if there was another such incident, General Weaver need not return to Iowa....unless he soundly thrashes the other Congressman! Mitchell's book is the first researched biography written about Weaver since 1919 and he presents scholarly research in a highly readable way. The gold vs silver controversy makes sense to me after reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A forgotten hero speaks anew to our times
SKIRMISHER is clearly a labor of love and a display of effortless skill by Robert B. Mitchell. Mitchell is fascinated with the underdog fighting ahead of his time on issues that will come, ultimately, to define the 20th Century and beyond in American politics. He is also keen on reviving our knowledge and the reputation of a great "almost was," James B. Weaver, civil war hero, congressman and third-party presidential candidate in an era of notorious corruption (Grant's presidency; the stealing of the election of 1876). A primogenitor and mentor to William Jennings Bryan, it was Weaver who devoted his career to fighting the gold standard and the cabal of robber baron bankers and their political lackeys who enabled them to starve development among farmers, merchants and the working classes with their dominion over credit. The misbehavior of banks echoes loudly and ironically today; the lesson is clear--greed and corruption will find a way. Mitchell's pure skill as a writer brings the elements of biography and history to vivid life. He shares the fruits of his nonpariel research in lucid, colorful sentences that betray his delight in the now-quaint sensibilities of the Progressive Era, where Temperance was a major issue and the viciousness of personal attacks in the political arena make today's campaigns seem tame. We owe a debt to Mitchell for rekindling our awareness of this seminal figure in such an engaging and pertinent book. ... Read more

Product Description

As seen on The Daily Show, July 24

State secrets, warrantless investigations and wiretaps, signing statements, executive privilege -- the executive branch wields many tools for secrecy. Since the middle of the twentieth century, presidents have used myriad tactics to expand and maintain a level of executive branch power unprecedented in this nation's history.

Most people believe that some degree of governmental secrecy is necessary. But how much is too much? At what point does withholding information from Congress, the courts, and citizens abuse the public trust? How does the nation reclaim rights that have been controlled by one branch of government?

With Presidential Secrecy and the Law, Robert M. Pallitto and William G. Weaver attempt to answer these questions by examining the history of executive branch efforts to consolidate power through information control. They find the nation's democracy damaged and its Constitution corrupted by staunch information suppression, a process accelerated when "black sites," "enemy combatants," and "ghost detainees" were added to the vernacular following the September 11, 2001, terror strikes.

Tracing the current constitutional dilemma from the days of the imperial presidency to the unitary executive embraced by the administration of George W. Bush, Pallitto and Weaver reveal an alarming erosion of the balance of power. Presidential Secrecy and the Law will be the standard in presidential powers studies for years to come.
