4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to have for new to advance financial calculations
This book is a concise and informative guide to the concepts and mechanics (maths) and application of financial instruments.

Step by step instructions are given for the HP 12c.

1-0 out of 5 stars odd pages to faint to read
I had read comments on the poor print quality of this book but you have to see it to believe how bad it really is. There is no excuse for this product, it is completely unacceptable. Every single page is poor quality in addition every odd page is extremely faint and hard to read especially when the text gets very small as with fractions in formulas. The beauty of online shopping for retailers is the inconvenience of returning items especially if you are ordering from Canada to a US address just across the border. This book would have vanished from the shelves long ago if it were sold only in bookstores. I can only hope that by adding my review I will help to quell this type of nonsense. I really want to trust the publishers Amazon carries and concern myself with the content not the print quality in reading reviews. Isn't Prentice Hall a name you can trust, I suppose not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite disappointed
This book at this price is a bad & cheapphotocopy --- some pages are of such poor copy quality that its hard to read --no fun to read and study it at all -other than that its grossly overrated for content and presentation

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book !!!!!!!!!!
This book is excellent for learning how to do financial mathematics. It covers the topic from a global perspective, looking at the conventions in different markets in the world such as Australia, UK, France, Germany, Japan, US etc. and shows you how to convert calculations among different market conventions. A truly global book and quite clearly explained!!! Makes a great teaching tool and an excellent reference tool.

Product Description
The New Essential Steiner is an illuminating, completely new introduction to the philosophy and essential writings of Rudolf Steiner, introduced and edited by Robert McDermott, who also edited the now-classic Essential Steiner. This new volume offers selections from a wide variety of Steiner's published works, presenting a broad, accessible overview of Anthroposophy.

In his introduction, McDermott recounts Steiner's life and work, from his childhood and education to his work as a natural scientist, philosopher, scholar, educator, artist, interpreter of culture, and seer. He places Steiner in relation to major traditions of thought and explores the genesis and development of Anthroposophy.

Although Rudolf Steiner is considered by many to be the greatest spiritual seer and philosophical thinker of the twentieth century and is credited with major cultural contributions such as the worldwide Waldorf school movement and the ever-growing biodynamic agricultural movement, he nevertheless remains relatively unknown to both academics and the public. The purpose of this volume is to redress that situation by introducing Steiner's work to a broader audience and making his name more universally recognized.

The New Essential Steiner includes selections from Steiner's writings, which are grouped into chapters that demonstrate the breadth of his thinking and spiritual accomplishments.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Anyone learning or teaching Anthroposophy
I have just finished "The New Essential Steiner" by Robert McDermott.I teach at a tertiary organisation preparing teachers and have found this book an excellent tool to use to introduce our students to the world of Steiner's thinking.Robert McDermott's introduction is clear and appealing. He examines why Steiner is still so little known despite being one of the most advanced thinkers of our age, commenting that too many of his "followers" put Steiner against modern thinkers and movements - a place Steiner would have shuddered to have found himself. He states: "Despite obstacles to the spread of Steiner's ideas and their influence, there is increasing evidence that they have become more familiar and received more credit than they did a generation ago.It is no longer unusual to observe academics and seekers acknowledging that Steiner's innovations such as Waldorf Education, biodynamic agriculture, anthroposophically extended medicine, and anthroposophic arts represent significant contributions to contemporary thought and culture."
McDermott give a clear and compelling introduction to Steiner making clear who he was and what his work was about. He then presents Steiner's work as having 12 distinct branches:
1.Philosophy: Self and World
2.Evolution: Cosmic and Human
3.Anthropos: Body, Soul and Spirit
4.Spiritual intelligence
5.Christ and other exalted beings
6.Reincarnation, Karma and the dead
7.Arts
8.Society
9.Education
10. Psychology
11. Health and Healing
12. Gaia and the Future
In each section McDermot gives a very interesting overview of the field and then presents Steiner's writing about that field. These articles are newly translated with gender references removed, making them much more available to modern readership, and with excellent references and referrals for where else to read more.
As a person who has read Steiner for many years and teaches in Waldorf Education, I found this book a tremendous help in putting areas of his work in relation to one another and to modern scientific thinking.I found the book incredibly interesting, quotable, refreshing, stimulating. It is a book I would highly recommend both to enquirers about Steiner and Anthroposophy and to those very familiar with it as a way to help introduce others, to sharpen their own understanding and to gain an overview of the depth and breadth of Steiner's contribution to the world.

Product Description
A series of extraordinary questions begin to hover when we consider the names C. G. Jung and Rudolf Steiner together.

·What is the relationship between their views of psychology?
·How do their views on evil, on the relationship between East and West, on life after death, technology, clairvoyance, the Christ, alchemy, spiritual practice, and many other common interests compare?
·Is Jung’s individuation process the same as Steiner’s development of individuality?
·How does the Jung’s Self relate to Steiner’s “I”?

To answer these questions, Gerhard Wehr — an anthroposophist and C.G. Jung biographer as well as author of books on the Western spiritual tradition — visualizes Jung and Steiner and the essential elements of their thinking together. This opens us to new insights and forms a basis for a spiritual psychology that integrates both approaches.

Wehr’s skilled and articulate understanding of Jung and Steiner takes us into many themes. He clarifies the difference between soul consciousness and spiritual consciousness. He shows how meditation relates to the image work of the soul; and he compares the soul and spiritual views of sexuality.

The author also considers the Grail stream as a way of uniting Jung and Steiner. He discusses the significance of a therapeutic perspective large enough to address the cultural problems of our time. By approaching two such important worldviews with depth, they are enlarged, strengthened, and revitalized. If taken to heart, this work can free both spiritual science of Steiner and the analytic psychology of Jung from the dangers of dogmatism. This is a significant step toward a truly spiritual psychology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound explorations
This is an intelligent, comparative exploration of the work of Rudolf Steiner and Carl Jung, written by a follower of the first and a biographer of the second. Both were explorers of 'consciousness' and though they both had scientific trainings, they yielded towards the revelatory and the religious in their ultimate views about what it means to be a human being. The territory they traversed in doing so had many parallels, assessed and compared by Wehr, in ways that are mostly helpful, and sometimes illuminating.

Product Description
Though Steiner was born with clairvoyant capacities, itwas not until his fortieth year that he could link his innerexperiences with the principal figure of Western spirituality, JesusChrist. After that “solemn festival of knowledge,” as hedescribes it in his autobiography, Steiner received ceaselessrevelations about the significance and detailed course of theChrist’s incarnation. In lecture cycles spanning two decades, hespoke of the hidden background to the four gospels, the Book ofRevelations, and even a “Fifth Gospel” of events that he readdirectly from the spiritual worlds.

This series of talks presents the most accessible and illuminating ofSteiner’s revelations with regard to Christ and his significancefor the spiritual development of humanity. He discusses the linkbetween Buddha and the life of Christ, a description that unitesBuddhism and Christianity, not in theory but in the spiritualactivities of the Buddha and Christ.

Here, too, Steiner describes the relationship between the GreekMystery traditions and the event at Golgotha:

“A ‘sign’ was to be placed before them as well, a sign now tobe enacted before the eyes of all humankind. The ‘mysticaldeath’ that had been a ceremonial act in the Mystery Temples forhundreds and thousands of years was now to be presented on the greatarena of world-history. Everything that had taken place in the secrecyof the Temples of Initiation was brought into the open as a singleevent on Golgotha.”

Utilizing a historical overview, revealing the relationship betweenthe great religious traditions, and how they have conspired togetherfor the good of humanity, Steiner never loses sight of the Gospel’sgreat inner meaning, as echoed in the Gospel of St. Luke: “Therevelation of the spiritual worlds from the heights and its answeringreflection from the hearts of human beings brings peace to all whosepurpose upon the evolving Earth is to unfold good will.” ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Compassion, Love, and the nativity stories of Jesus
These ten inspiring talks by Rudolf Steiner on Luke's much loved gospel about the birth, life, crucifixion, and resurrection of Christ begins with an informative introduction by its editor, Robert McDermott. At the end of the book, McDermott supplies a "descriptive outline" elegantly summarizing each talk and helpfully comparing the Luke gospel to that of Mark with respect to the birth of Jesus. Throughout, Steiner's own descriptions are startling but persuasive. The incarnation of Christ into the body of Jesus required that two Jesus children be born to two separate couples in two different towns. Mark tells about one, Luke the other. The two Jesus children become one at the time of the cleansing of the temple, when they are about 12 years old, as both gospels agree. The composite human body of Jesus received the Christ in its thirtieth year, at the Baptism by John, after which the three year ministry of Christ on earth began. Steiner is able to show how so great an event as the word becoming flesh would reasonably entail such complexities as well as eons of preparation (see also his classic, "Christianity as Mystical Fact"). McDermott's Introduction contrasts Steiner's mode of spiritual research into the esoteric "record" called by the Sanskrit name, the Akasha,
with the exhaustive and impressive research of the Jesus Seminar. The two methods differ substantially. Describing each with exquisite skill and clarity, McDermott shows that they are not mutually exclusive.
In addition, Steiner's comparisons between Buddha and Christ make both figures shine with a wondrous esoteric significance for humanity's cosmic evolution. The entire book brings a deep understanding of both compassion and love and it offers a profound reading of the nativity story as well. An outstanding work by Steiner, excellently edited and introduced by McDermott.

5-0 out of 5 stars The childhood of boy Jesus
Recorded is the life of the boy Jesus... his childhood.
Recorded is - among other things - how when Adam "fell in Eden" not all of his 'forces' fell with him... some were left behind, kept pure... not to 'fall' until the boy Jesus was born.
The 'left-behind-forces' of Adam entered boy Jesus, which gave Jesus a puresomeness about him... an innonence.

Recorded is what happened in the Temple in Bethlehem...

Recorded are about levels of spiritual awareness:
Imagination - recognizing spiritual entities
Inspiration - interacting with spiritual entities
Intuition - dwelling within the spiritual beings / being one with them.
At level of Intuition one no longer distinguishes between others and self in spiritual surroundings... all are one, are brothers...
Imagination = clairvoyance (according to Rudolf Steiner in his lecture at that particular time) and usually no one reaches the other two levels before going through level of Imagination; However - exceptions were made... some were 'inspired', some were 'intuititive'.
Luke was Imaginitive, who used the words of Inspired people to help him in his recording - according to Rudolf Steiner. Luke called the Inspired (cognitive) seers: "servants of the word" - they serve the word (inspired) but not able to see clear images (as Imaginitives could - like Luke e.g.).
It is possibe for all three to exist...
[Actually: the book "According to Luke" was written by Lucius the Cyrene (earlier Lucius of Ceptulus) - Bishopp of the Church ofLaodicea, kinsmen of Luke and of the 70 selected to be teacher. He had overheard oral conversations of Luke with Paul in time when Paul was preaching in the Church located in Laodicea.
The intention of Lucius was to have a recording for those people of faith living in the Provinces under the Roman Rule (Palestine and other Roman Provinces). Since it was directed to people living in Palestine, and other Roman Provinces, there is no mention of the experiences of Jesus outside those areas (like flight from Egypt for example).]

It is recorded that Jesus developed far faster than other people at that time... and this is recorded by Luke.

In the recording (of the lecture of Rudolf Steiner) there is recorded about human development (physical body - ether body - astral body - Ego a.k.a. I - spirit-Self - Spirit-Mind - Spirit-Man) and how Jesus went through those developments in a fast rate.

So recording is about development of boy Jesus... as seen from spiritual perspective (7-fold nature of human make-up).

Texts between [] are added by me -- are not from recordings in "Luke" book with recordings of lectures by Rudolf Steiner. ... Read more

Product Description
Beginning with a consideration of Nietzsche's inflammatory and critical insight that the modern world is framed by the death of God, Michael Gruber confronts contemporary disenchantment and its necessary offspring, the "universalization of terror." By making truth relative, negating the value of beauty, and rendering questions about the good dubious if not obsolete, terror permeates all aspects of our psychosocial existence with the threat of dehumanization. In response to this terror, which is the fundamental mood of our time, Gruber advocates re-imagining our destiny as a path of initiation.

Describing an inner awakening to the spiritual world, whose earthly manifestation of its inherent divinity invites and necessitates our conscious participation, Gruber offers readings and practices that promote the incarnation of "noble souls." Referring to the work of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Steiner, An Unknown Destiny describes how psychotherapy can move beyond healing the ego to transcending the ego. Gruber shows how opening the soul to meditative or intuitive forms of thinking can contribute to the development of new soul faculties of perception and to the experience of moral freedom. Most important, he shows how the incomplete and continuously evolving Mystery of Golgotha can inspire the emergence and presence of modern human beings infused with Christ consciousness--reverence, wisdom, peace, and love.

"An Unknown Destiny is like a stream of fresh water in which all psychotherapeutic approaches would do well to immerse and possibly transform. Gruber's reading of the works of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Steiner concerning the realm of terror that pervades our world, is not only a tour de force of reflection upon the writings of these seminal figures, but a clear and highly accessible one. Michael Gruber has done a great service to psychotherapy. I learned a lot." --Nathan Schwartz-Salant, Ph.D., Jungian analyst, author of The Mystery of Human Relationship and The Black Nightgown

"Michael Gruber brings together key points in Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Steiner to point out the connection between psychotherapy and the path of initiation appropriate to our time. In this way, he locates the essential spiritual challenges from our greatest thinkers. Gruber has an appreciation of the mythic that approaches, at times, that of A.K. Coomaraswamy. But he does more. He shows how living thinking, the fresh experience of being, and the awakening from technology's hypnotic thrall, can all become realities for us. In doing so, Gruber clears a path for the self-aware individual to become no longer a passive recipient of mass culture, but a point source of love and wisdom." --Michael Lipson, Ph.D, psychotherapist, author of Stairway of Surprise

"Michael Gruber has written a truly remarkable, courageous-beyond-belief book. He shows how modern psychology serves terrorist structures of consciousness. He further shows that only a truly spiritual psychology can break through these forms. His creative reading of Nietzsche opens the path of therapy as modern initiation. His work with Rudolf Steiner reveals the presence of pathologies of spirit that are still being approached as psychological difficulties; and how to approach them anew. Finally, his understanding of Heidegger shows the way to the imaginal reality of the unity of person-world. A truly breakthrough book!" --Robert Sardello, Ph.D., author of Love and the World and Silence, cofounder and codirector of The School of Spiritual Psychology ... Read more

Product Description
A gift was given you at your first breath--have you opened it? It came from the stars and impressed itself into you at your most vulnerable moment. In this introduction to astrosophy, or star wisdom, a science with ancient roots and modern relevance, David Tresemer shows how the patterns written in the heavens influence a person's life. Taking as an example the remarkable life of Rudolf Steiner, Tresemer demonstrates the Oracle of the Solar Cross, whose four points interact throughout each of our lives to shape opportunities and challenges that our souls must face.

Steiner spoke often of the "starry script" and hinted that, whereas its patterns impress themselves upon the human psyche, we can also influence this heavenly text, altering it in service of the continued development of humanity. Through stories from the life and examples from the work of Steiner as well as the Star Brothers and Sisters who share aspects of his Solar Cross, Tresemer illuminates this truth.

Rich in art and anecdote, this groundbreaking book gives insight into the foundations of anthroposophy and shows how great acts, feelings, and thoughts by human beings on Earth shine out and impress their patterns into the cosmos. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars history as an image of destiny
Although astrology remains a viable method for discerning hidden threads in our lives, the "knowledge" behind it is hardly taken seriously by mainstream science today.
How can we take seriously the idea that planets have an influence on our lives, now that we know how distant they are from earth? Even more so, how can we take seriously any effects of the constellations, now that we know in our post modern relativism that we could equally or democratically find the same pattern in any of the billions of randomly placed stars that stretch across the heavens?
To approach the profound wisdom that informs ancient astrology, without violating the advances we have made in knowledge, we must first find a way to hold a tension between what we know to be true today AND what we may discover through fresh immediate experiences that may at first appear to violate what we know to be true today.
One way to achieve this is to demonstrate the connection between the historical facts of an individual life and the movements of the stars that are shown to have synchronous significance with those facts. If we modern people can feel the "rightness" of the connection, the unmistakable significance that goes way beyond random coincidence, and if we can hold that tension, we are in a position to ask some very interesting questions, such as: how can it be so? And, what methodology is this that brings such convincing results?
David Tresemer's (with Robert Schiappacasse) book, Star Wisdom and Rudolph Steiner provides us with such an experience. He shows in convincing fashion, for this reader anyway, how and in what way the facts of Rudolph Steiner's historical life can be associated to certain constellations (in particular, that constellation that lies behind the sun at the time of birth). From this association a meaning emerges (i.e. not a subjective interpretation). This meaning is a recapitulation of an ancient wisdom which Tresemer originates in Zarathustra. It is a wisdom that speaks of our lives as expressions of a destiny which has its origins in the stars.
Tresemer gives us a way to perceive the ordinary events of our lives as an image! This capacity should come as no surprise since the ancient Israelites have brought us this wisdom when they discovered that their own historical lives were an image of God's purpose.
Tresemer's method is called the Oracle of the Solar Cross, and he has succeeded in finding his way to objectivity within the inner world so that his conclusions carry both internal and external validity, as he himself explains in the book. Thus, his method and conclusions can be examined by open (and I stress "open") inquiry, a point that the modern mind should find satisfying.
This book should not be relegated to those shelves that say Esoteric, New Age or Steiner. It is far too important a book. This book is for those individuals who are seeking a way to connect the wisdom of the past to the knowledge of today in a way that does violence to neither.
Owen Barfield once said that it is a relatively easy matter to be objective about the external world but very hard to find objectivity within the inner world. In fact not many scientists even try the latter. When one tries, the results are shocking. It is as if a connection happens between our ordinary human existence and the unfathomable mysteries that originate and inform our existence. It feels to this reader like a "coming home".
Tresemer delivers a shock of recognition that at the same time can disturb our modern prejudices about our origins. It is a shock of affirmation that says, "Yes, this who I am, this is who I really am!"
What this book accomplishes in terms of Steiner's life can also be achieved in each of our lives. We each can experience the unfolding of our historical selves as an image of our destiny i.e. where we each belong "in the greater scheme". One method of achieving this is the Oracle of the Solar Cross, which is the methodological underpinning of the whole book.
It is an immensely practical book that teaches true knowledge while at the same time gives us a way to end the stunning isolation that the modern ego endures so much today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A primer on dangerous scams!
Part I of Steiner's book is called "You Can Be Taken." No matter who we are or how smart we think we are, we are vulnerable to the snares of the con man. Why? It's not because we're greedy or stupid. It's because we are trusting. We trust people we think are sincere and being sincere is certainly a quality of trustworthy people. However, as Steiner points out, if what the person is selling is nonsense, it doesn't matter that she's sincere. As Steiner says: "If you consult an astrologer to make life decisions, you are giving up control over your own life. You are living your life based upon mystical nonsense. That is true whether the practicing astrologer whom you consult is a fraud or a sincere true believer"(6).

Steiner's book is a how-to manual in protection from cons and scams. He begins with the warning that anybody can be taken, including you. If you fail to learn lesson number one, don't bother reading the rest of the book. He describes how he uses cold reading to fool people into thinking he's psychic. Cold reading is the name given to a set of techniques used by psychics, astrologers, palm readers, numerologists, "or any of numerous other mystical practitioners of nonsense" (21). The reader "starts cold, with no information" about his or her client.

"The reader begins with generalities which are applicable to large segments of the population. He or she pays careful attention to reactions: words, body language, skin color, breathing patterns, dilation or contraction of the pupils of the eye, and more. The subject of the reading will usually convey important information to the reader: sometimes in words, and sometimes in bodily reactions to the reading."

"From observation, the reader will feed back to the subject what the latter wants to hear. That is the overwhelming guiding principle of the mystics: Tell 'em what they want to hear. That will keep them coming back for more."

In addition to cold reading, Steiner explains that psychics are often quite sensitive and perceptive people. They pick up on subtle clues. This surprises most people and leads many of them to attribute this sensitivity to being psychic. Thus, the sensitive, perceptive person gets a lot of feedback from others about their psychic abilities. "Hearing that enough, the person begins to believe that he or she is indeed psychic" (29).

Steiner doesn't think most psychics are frauds. He thinks the majority are sincere but wrong, and that none of them truly help the police solve crimes, despite what the media and the public might think. In fact, both the media and the public provide the same kind of after-the-fact finding of meaning that dominates cold readings when they give psychics credit for assisting the police. The alleged psychic detective supposedly helps the police locate the body of a murder victim. The psychic senses the body will be found near running water and, shock of shocks, the body is found by the edge of a river. Steiner was once in Iowa where this happened. His question?"Where in Iowa do people live that is not near running water?"

After the psychics, Steiner takes on the astrologers. He considers astrology to be a pseudoscience. But he also argues that it is a form of bigotry because it prejudges people. He has a hilarious chapter entitled "Hitler was an Aries."

Steiner's chapter on the blood readers (chapter 8) is a riot. The theory is based on a Japanese book translated as You Are Your Blood Type. It is a deliciously funny story and I won't spoil it for you: Get Steiner's book and read it for yourself. (You already know the main plot. Substitute blood type for sun sign, palm lines, forehead furrows, foot shape, birth date, facial features, bumps on the head, etc.)

In a single chapter, Steiner takes on the Ouija board, tarot cards, remote viewing, reincarnation, alchemy, channeling, dowsing, biorhythms, the Bermuda triangle, Edgar Cayce, and Nostradamus. He relates these items to personal experiences in interesting and amusing ways. His style is easy, entertaining, and enlightening.

Part III could save you a lot of money. It's about various cons, swindles, and scams, including pyramid schemes and the three-card monte. Part IV is called "the cruelest scams." Here Steiner assails psychic surgery, faith healers, and those who claim to communicate with the dead. He writes of the latter: "It is unconscionable that these bunco artists prey on bereavement, love, superstition, and human emotions to rob the bereaved of not only their money, but of the opportunity to come to terms with reality. By perpetrating the illusion that their customers can actually communicate with dead love ones, the crime of fraud takes place in one of its most hateful settings." According to Steiner, "There is no reliable evidence---NONE, not the slightest shred--that living humans can communicate with the dead" (150).

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors
This book is rife with mathematical errors, both in the text and in the solved problems or their answers. I skipped over many of the problems in the first half of the book and still encountered an error every few pages. In the second half of the book, there are many parts that have a mathematical error on every page, sometimes more than one error per page. If you already know the math you can spot the errors, but if you haven't already taken classes in the math this book is about, it will lead you astray and confuse you badly. Most of the errors are in the answers to problems, and if you can use Maple or Mathematica you can find out the correct answer, though it's a terrific waste of time. But there are also serious factual (mathematical) errors in the text itself. These are probably typos; there are other errors and style inconsistencies that make me think the book has not been proofread even cursorily.

I emailed McGraw-Hill about this. When I first wrote this review, I had not received a reply from them after waiting almost two weeks. However, after 2 1/2 weeks, I did receive a reply from an editor apologizing, informing me that they were going to contact the authors to "rectify every error" for the next reprint, offering a refund of my purchase price, and thanking me for informing them.

Better late than never, and I'm much more inclined to consider Schaum books in the future now. If I eventually find a newer printing on the shelves, I'll check a few of the errors I know about and update this review as to whether they were corrected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for brushing up on undergrad math only
This book is a pretty good review of undergraduate college mathematics through differential equations. It stays on a pretty elementary level. Two-thirds of the book is dedicated to precalculus topics and calculus involving single variable functions. The last section of the book squeezes multi-variable calculus, differential equations, and even vector calculus into just a few chapters. The problems are unique - they are pretty useful at showing how you use the various types of math reviewed to work some physics problems. However, if you are looking for a more advanced math tutorial aimed at physics students I suggest "The Mathematics of Classical and Quantum Physics" by Byron. That book includes discussions and problems on the theory of vector spaces, analytic function theory, Green's function method of solving ODE's and PDE's, and the theory of groups. Plus the price is low at between ten and twenty dollars depending on whether you get it used or new, making it comparable in price to this book. However, if you feel you are not up to conquering Byron's book, this outline would be an excellent warm-up for it. The following is the table of contents for this Schaum's outline, since at the time I am writing this the contents are not yet shown.

Product Description

While sitting on a French terrace overlooking a three-hundred-year-old olive grove at sunset, a man listens as his wife confesses her love for someone else. Preparing to leave after twenty years of marriage, she details her erotic and emotional life, a confession that leaves her husband spent but delirious with love for her. The imminent loss of the passion of his life leads him to experience the power of desire, grief, and flushed obsession—and thus begins this riveting monologue at the end of a marriage, one that is mesmerizing with anger and regret.

Entirely alive in these intense moments, the husband examines every experience, every feeling that floods his mind with grief and anticipation. And this need, this experience, becomes one of absolute truth, as the story itself becomes composed of complicating love and loss.

Negative Space joins Steiner's earlier fictions—such as Bathers, Dread, and The Catastrophe—in evoking the dark texture and brilliant detail of erotic loss. The result is an exploration of heartbreak and sexual obsession the reader will not soon forget.
