Product Description
Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris were engaged to be married, when they were invited to share the Presidential box with the Lincolns at Ford's Theater on the evening of Good Friday, 1865. When John Wilkes Booth crept into the box, the young couple became witnesses to a central tragedy in American history.

But Lincoln's assassination is only one part of this novel--for in researching the lives of Henry and Clara Rathbone, Mallon uncovered an even more dramatic story of passion, scandal, heroism, murder, and madness. Imaginatively re-creating their lives, he tells the larger story of nineteenth-century Victorian America: a society structured above suppressed impulses and undercurrents that grew stronger as the century progressed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Henry & Clara: A Novel
Only two interesting things ever happened to this uninteresting couple: they were in the theater box with Lincoln when he was shot, and many years later the husband went crazy and killed his wife. While these were highly dramatic events, they were the only high points -- or low points -- in the lives of two remarkably boring people. Mallon has tried to stretch their otherwise idle and pointless stories into an entire historical novel. He fails. Readers will be better served by looking up Henry and Clara Rathburns' bios on the Internet and passing on this tedious book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Afraid to read it.
I am a bit skeptical to read this piece, as Senator Ira Harris was my great great Uncle. Family oral history has told us (and my grandfather who was born in 1886 told us this) that Clara grabbed Booth's boot as he went over the railing and thus accounted for his injured leg as it was twisted when he fell. Apparently the author did not bother to find any living descendants when he wrote the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Wilkes Booth's Other Victims
On April 14, 1865, an engaged couple, Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris, accepted the Lincolns' last-minute invitation to join them in their box at Ford's Theatre. For the nation, the impact of that night's tragedy would be felt at once; for Henry and Clara, the denouement of their own private tragedy occurred years later.

"Henry and Clara" follows the titular couple from their childhood in Albany, New York, where Henry's widowed, ambitious mother sets her cap at Clara's widowed father, Ira Harris, whom Pauline Rathbone sees as a promising politician. A marriage soon follows, and young Henry and Clara find themselves stepbrother and stepsister. Though neither child cares much for the other's parent, Henry and Clara soon gravitate toward each other, and as they mature their feelings grow into romantic love. Before they can marry, though, they must overcome the opposition of their parents, and the outbreak of the Civil War throws yet another obstacle into their path.

There is another difficulty, one the determined and devoted Clara doesn't much want to acknowledge: Henry. For Clara, the mercurial Henry is Byronic, but the horrors of war soon disclose how fragile Henry's psyche truly is. Nonetheless, Clara, deeply in love and not willing to give up easily, presses on with her marriage plans, even after the Lincoln assassination strips yet another layer of sanity from Henry.

Though the story "Henry and Clara" tells is a tragic one, Mallon's wry narrative voice and his sharp eye prevent it from being a gloomy one. His characterizations are superb, with Clara, the main viewpoint character, being a particular success. Even as Clara becomes more isolated and her situation more grim, she never turns into the pathetic victim she might have become with a less skilled author.

If there's a rough patch in the novel, it's at the beginning, where the immersion into Albany politics may be too much for some readers. Persevere, though, and you'll be well rewarded. This was one of the best historical novels I've read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Innocent Bystanders
Last year I visited Washington DC for the first time. I walked for hours and hours. And I was charmed, as I never expected that I would be. Soon thereafter, I read Henry & Clara - a novelization of real people and events.

Henry and Clara Rathbone - two people who grew up together in the pre-civil war era. Henry went to war; was damaged by war. Clara fell in love - with Henry, with politics, with Washington. What would their story have been like without the war? By the time they came together in marriage, their interests and goals in life had diverged. Clara's interests drove them to Washington where she befriended the troubled Mary Todd Lincoln.

Most beguiling are the descriptions of Washington as a small southern town. Clara crossing the square in front of her house to the White House across the street; meeting up with Robert Lincoln in the park. The carriage rides and salons. In that time, the President and family lived in and were part of a neighborhood .

Look at any picture of a momentous event, of famous people. Who are the people in the background? The other people who were there? A hundred years from now, looking at a picture of the motorcade in Dallas, will we know that was Nellie Connelly in the car with the Kennedys? Henry and Clara were at the theater, in the box with the Lincolns that night when John Wilkes Booth struck. What happens to people who experience such trauma? People who, in memory, replay in slow motion the events of the evening until their lives resound with could have beens, would have beens, if onlys, maybes and guilty wishes coming true. Did I wish it? Did I want it? Could I have done something? Should I have done something? Did I even want to do something?

It is a book about loss as much as anything else. Mrs. Lincoln lost her husband. The nation lost its innocence. Henry lost his way and finally lost his mind. Clara lost her dreams and finally lost her life. And what was the real trigger? The war? The assassination? Conflicting goals in the marriage? The sweep of events that was too momentous to survive? Who and what died in the theater box that night? I think it was more than just Lincoln

2-0 out of 5 stars So SLOW!
I really tried hard to get into this book; the subject sounded very interesting. I even took another reviewer's advice and skipped ahead to the assasination (after forcing myself through the first third of the book), but try as I might, I couldn't get into this book. The characters were dull and the story boring. I was immediately drawn in by the prologue, but then the story went nowhere quickly. The part about the assasination was interesting, but the monotony quickly took back over soon after. It is unlike me to not finish a book once I'm already halfway into it, but I just can't seem to muster up the desire to stick it out. I think I'll just skip to the epilogue and see what happened during all those dull pages. ... Read more

Product Description
In a career that spanned the first half of this century, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because his production was so large, this first book to examine his buildings concentrates on the more important ones, which as a body represent an architectural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty.

Although Shutze practiced from 1912 to 1968, covering the period of the ascendancy of modernism through its final triumph, he remained a firmly committed classicist, practicing out of an office in Atlanta where he produced an extraordinary body of monumental commercial and institutional buildings and country villas.

After graduating from Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed a year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize in 1915. Travelling to Rome later that year, he became a member of one of the earliest classes of fellows to occupy the recently completed American Academy on the Janiculum overlooking the city. The magnificent palazzo designed by America's most renowned architectural firm, McKim, Mead, and White, did not however please the fellows, who found it "too new," and therefore not authentic (Shutze would later devote much attention to techniques for instantly aging building facades).

With the coming of the First World War, Shutze and most of his classmates stayed in Rome as Red Cross volunteers, but when the war was over they returned to he Academy and to their studies. During his five years in Rome, Shutze immersed himself in learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He painstakingly measured those buildings as well as the monuments of the Roman Empire, committing the smallest of details to paper and to memory.

Returning to the U.S. in 1920, Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose masterpiece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia where he remained as the epitome of the "gentleman architect," designing some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Atlanta
This is a wonderful book on one of Atlanta's finest residential architects.Mr. Shutze had a command of many styles, but he most famous for his Neo-Palladian Swan House, he built for the Inman's in Buckhead, this home is simply a masterpiece and we are so fortunite that it is today open to the public. This book has wonderful images of the Inman home and many other opulant mansions that Philip Shutze designed in and around Atlanta. The text is quite scholarly and informative, and as I had already stated the book includes many vivid images.Atlanta was fortunite to have had an architect of this calibur designing its great homes during the Golden Age of American craftmanship.Like Houston's great residential architect John Staub, Shutze was a master of many styles, but always knew one didn't need to guild the lilly, so to speak, he also, like Staub, always designed a home to integrate fluidly with it's natural surroundings, this I believe was his greatest talent.Wonderful book on a great talent..highly recommended. ... In this magnificently illustrated book, the words of Australia's greatest writer, Henry Lawson, are immortalised in more than a hundred photographs gathered over a lifetime and carefully selected by Douglass Baglin. Henry Lawson's life is seen in every word he wrote. He was born in the Bush and understood its lonely beauty and his favourite characters were the bush men and women he described in verse and short story. The sense of mateship, the humour and simplicity of bush life have provided the bedrock of the Australian character, here commemorated in the blend of verse, prose and photographs. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Translated from the original Korean?
This is one of the worst textbooks I've had. It honestly reads like it was translated from Korean to German, and then to English. I have the concepts of Cognitive Psychology down pretty well, and I think this book actually caused me to lose some of it in the process of trying to wade through it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!
this book is the most boring text i've ever seen. readers would be discouraged by the ways these authors organize the subjects.
explanations of theories and ideas are overflowed..kept me and my colleagues confusing.
there are always some better books better than this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology
This book was helpful when I was completing my research paper on cognitive psychology. My class has not started, however, the book was very informative. The book is not easy to read however, it a text book for psychology majors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and helpful
As an undergraduate TA, I became familiar with this book when my supervising professor chose it for her undergraduate learning and cognition course. The text presents detailed coverage of the topics in an accessiblestyle. I disagree with the previous reviewer about the value of thediscussion of previous experiments. By providing a discussion of selectedexperiments rather than an exhaustive survey of the empirical literature, the intricacies of problem solving activity in cognitive psychology arehighlighted. The text uses a thematic approach throughout, and incorporatesreal world examples, case studies, and useful examples of experiments onspecific topics. I found myself wishing that this text had been used in thecognition course that I had previously taken.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why Not To Read Fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology
At this point in time I am reading "Fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology" for a class that I am currently attending. My class is wonderful, but this book is very dry.I understand that the subject ofcognitive psychology involves a lot of research and data and all thisinformation is important to the study of this subject, but this book isvery dry and personally boring. The whole book is a review of pastresearch and analyzations of the subject and the author gives no thought ofhis own to the subject. If I wanted to know every little detail of everycognitive experiment I would look that exact experiment up.There is nobasis of the book and it does not help me in the least little bit in mystudies. The content is very dry and not attention holding.I woulddefinately look into something else as far as books go if I wantedsomething interesting!!! ...
