The flavor of the original, edited for little ones
When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.

And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.

That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:

Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game

Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.

The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.

I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

Small book for younger readers/listeners
Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books; also, don't confuse these books with many other Pooh books, such as read-alongs or cassete tapes or Disney versions.

This little book is a near-exact reproduction of a Chapter One in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." great starter
my five year old is starting to read. This helps him a lot b/c the words are big and he can see them clearly enough to sound out each word. Some are still a little hard. He can only make it to the third page before he looses instrest. But he's 5 and is just starting. I defantly recommend this to parents who are looking for a fun way to introduce reading. Start out by reading it to them one night while they are taking a bubble bath. The next night let them try to sound out the easy words. Later go for bigger words and so on. Excellent introduction to Columbus for young readers
I must admit, my kindergartener and I are great fans of the Step Into Reading series of books. Since my daughter had completed the Step 2 books in the Step Into Reading series of books, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Step 3 books. I was a bit hesitant because I noticed there is quite a big leap between the Step 2 and Step 3 books, especially in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. The vocabulary is more advanced with higher order words, and the sentences are longer. I was also concerned that my daughter might not like the topics which seemed to be more 'academic' with history-based stories. My worries were unfounded. She loves the books and is reading them with very little help from me (and I enjoy listening to the stories!)

These books are excellent for building children's reading skills as well as increasing their confidence in reading. Once you've completed the Step 1 and Step 2 books (I would advise proceeding level by level), the Step 3 books are not as daunting as they might first appear. In "Christopher Columbus", young readers (intermediate level) will delight in the adventures of Columbus and his crew, enhanced by vivid, full color illustrations.

I can't recommend these books highly enough - they are great for building reading skills, and also educational. This book is a great introduction to Columbus for children ages 5 and up.

Early readers, slightly advanced readers, this fairly short book is interesting and informative.If your kid needs to grasp history a little better, this is a book to look at.It's done in a way that kids enjoy and actually pay attention to.Worth the money, easily.

Good Starter Book For Learning About Columbus.
Hi!:) This book is nice and informative without being too long and boring. It will most likely appeal to children around 5 or 6 through about 9 or 10. After that, they may want to read another, more in depth biography about this remarkable and fearless sailor and explorer.
The illustrations are realistic and well done.
I, as a parent, felt that the ending was a bit weak, but children will certainly gain a better understanding and clearer picture of the explorer, and his sacrifices, upon reading this book. Wording is simple and uncomplicated. A step 2 book.

Good book!
My daughter is crazy about learning about bones!She is 7 and loves to read this book.

Great introduction to the skeletal system
My boys, ages 7 and 5, love this book. The illustrations are wonderful, and the text is easy to understand. It is educational while still keeping their interest. The text is accurate, but simple enough that my seven year old can sit and read this to his little brother without any problems. To the reviewer who complained about the reference to Halloween: yes, it does have one page that mentions Halloween, but in no way does it advocate it or state any opinions on the merit of Halloween - it simply states the fact that some people think skulls look scary and wear skull masks on Halloween. That's it. You can't shelter your children from the reality that there is Halloween and many people do celebrate it. Even if you don't celebrate it, there is nothing in this book that should keep you from purchasing it for your children.

Good starter on human body
Bones (Step-Into-Reading, Step 2)

My boy is 4 and loves to learn. I started buying more educational books for him in the learning to read type books because they are simplified. Level 1 might be too simple but2 and 3 are reliably in his range of understanding and sometimes level 4 is too. Although some level 4 have too much information or are too complex for a 4 year old. It depends on the topic and maybe on which brand of early reader it is.

All brands of early readers give small bites of information with illustrations. This makes them easy to absorbed.

This book is a good introduction to the human body bones. It is just basic info but it makes some good points and has decent pictures to go with it. If there was a version with a little more scientific information he might be ready for that but I have yet to find one. Other books on the human body have way too much information and are too complex.

I recommend this as a starter for young children.

This is a good book to start introducing bones of the body.There is only one page about Halloween and it said very little, so don't base your opinion on that.It talks about how we would look if we didn't have bones and how our skeletons match our body size and shape.Great book.

A Part of Western Culture
Critiquing Dickens' Christmas Carol is a misnomer. Rather, it is Dickens who critiques us with this masterwork.

A Christmas Carol has burrowed into the very heart of our Western Culture to where few people would be confused if you referred to someone as a "Scrooge," that is to say a skinflint, miser.

Aside from presenting us with some of the most memorable images in literature as Scrooge is taken by the Ghosts of the Past, Present and Future to review his life and probable ending, we are brought along with his and given opportunity to review those elements in our own lives.

A Christmas Carol was not just a nice story of the Christmas Season to give warmth and cheer.

Far from it!

Dickens had an agenda. Just as in his other famous works, like Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, Dickens longed to make a social statement to draw attention to the poor in England, their plight and hardship. A Christmas Carol is about Scrooge as a person, but also as representing a class of the wealthy whose abundance is wrested from the large working poor such as Cratchett and his family. THEY are the point. THEY are the ones Dickens sought to draw to public attention.

Heaven help us is we simply see this book as nostalgia and fail to see the point Dickens had to make then and which still applies today!

Abrridged
Even though you wouldn't know it from the information shown above, this is an abridged adaptation, apparently prepared for young children.Which is fine if that's what you want.The illustrations are first rate and the quality of the book is excellent.However, if what you want is a graphic representation of Victorian London, rather than the screenplay for "Mr McGoo's Christmas Carol", then look elsewhere.

A Christmas Carol
Scrooge was a man whom lived in a small old house that at one time belonged to his departed business partner, Jacob Marley. Though he could meet the expense of the most expensive clothes available, he chose to dress in the fashion of a lower-class civilian. He worked in a counting house with only his clerk Bob Cratchit for business. Scrooge was a grumpy old man whom believed that Christmas is for rich people.He also thinks that Christmas is also just a reason to miss work and get gifts to one another and also to exchange the gifts. Most people respected his dislike for Christmas holidays, and continued to dislike him, despise him, even hate him.He doesn't believe in all of the good cheer, happiness and charity that the season promotes, and he makes sure everyone knows how he feels about the Christmas spirit.His money was what he lived by.One night Scrooge was visited by his friend, which was Marley, who was also grumpy and cold as Scrooge was.When Marley visited Scrooge, Marley told Scrooge that if he continues to be stingy and so selfishly he would continue with greed as his assemble.He also tells Scrooge that three spirits will haunt him.On Christmas Eve, Scrooge received three visits from three specific ghosts.The ghost names where the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.Those ghost showed him the true meaning of Christmas and the true meaning of his life.They showed him his error in valuing money over people. Scrooge saw his long forgotten past, realizing all the good quality he had deserted, and all he had done to guide him where he was now. He saw his childhood, his grief and pleasure. He saw his relatives and acquaintances. He also saw himself turn from all these through his greed as his age progressed.

A Christmas Carol, written by Charles Dickens is a book of being given a second chance.Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character of the book, is a grumpy old man who feels he has no time for anyone.As an owner of a firm called Scrooge and Marley's, Scrooge runs the business while Marley has been dead.On Christmas Eve, exactly seven years from Marley's death, his ghost visits Scrooge.He tells him that soon three different ghost will visit him during the night.

The book is cleverly written and fun to read.It often makes you put yourself into Scrooge's situations.My favorite part of the book is when Scrooge visited the past.I think it would be great to revisit all of the things you used to have in life.My least favorite part of the book is when Scrooge is dead in the future, instead of mourning, everyone is interested in his death will.It would be horrible to leave earth in such a way that all anyone wants is your money.
As far as recommending the book for others, I believe its a great story especially for the holidays.If you are into the Christmas glee spirit then you would like the book, especially the ending.A Christmas Carol can make you angry, cry and laugh all throughout the book.Its a story of one man whos favorite words, "Bah Humbug" becomes sincere and realizes all that he can accomplish in life. ... Glorious Treatment of a Holiday Classic!
A few years ago, I was in a production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL at my community's playhouse.One Sunday evening after the matinee and before the evening performance, I stopped in a Barnes&Noble and decided to pick this book up.It looked like a beautiful adaptation of a classic holiday story that had made my Christmases special for years.

I was not disappointed.

Just take a second now to look at the cover of this book.Whether you have it in your hand, or you look at it on Amazon, just glance at it for a few seconds.Do you see the intricate detail artist Dean Morrissey puts in his illustration?The bricks on the wall, and shadow on Scrooge's face.The snow on the pavement on the ground.This intricate attention to detail is present throughout all of the illustrations.They are gorgeous, and they bring vibrant life to Dickens' classic.

Now, for the treatment of Dickens' writing.This book is abridged, but is marvelously done.Many of the lines are Dickens' own, and all of the cuts come from lengthy descriptions that aren't essential to the story.Dickens' overall tone and beautiful use of language are present in this book, and they make the tale of Scrooge and his redemption as inspiring as it's ever been.

This is a nice introduction if you've never read the Dickens original (though I can't imagine anyone hasn't).However, if you have read it, this is a must-own if you value Scrooge and his ghosts as an essential part of the holiday season, as I do. ... Read more

Sisters of Scituate Light
During the War of 1812, sisters Abbie and Rebecca Bates are tending Scituate Light while their father makes a brief trip to shore. When a British warship arrives in the harbor, the girls must think quickly to protect their home. Armed with only a fife and drum, the girls play "Yankee Doodle Dandy". The British, fearing what they assume is the imminent approach of American soldiers, retreat and never return to Scituate Light. Abbie and Rebecca are later hailed as heroines in the community.

Krensky uses the sisters' own words (gleaned from later accounts of the incident) for the book's dialogue. Vibrant illustrations enrich the retelling of this classic lighthouse legend, although the depiction of the British soldiers as sneering villains is too stereotypical and does not match the style of the rest of the art.

Finally, a book worthy of this true story!
This true story is a natural for a kids' book. During the War of 1812, when the British Navy was raiding the American coast, Abigail and Rebecca, the daughters of the keeper of Scituate Light in Massachusetts, successfully scared off a British warship by playing "Yankee Doodle" on fife and drum, making the British think the Home Guard was on its way. Krensky, who has written many fine children's books, does a great job with the text, using the sisters' own later account of the event as the source of their dialogue. Schuett is an excellent illustrator (I particularly like her Spring Thaw and Come and See), and the art is engaging, dramatic and pleasing to the eye. (My only quarrel is with the slightly too cartoony depiction of the British sailors.) A far cry from the run-of-the-mill illustrations you get in children's historical nonfiction. The story has been done before as a children's book, but this book is far and away the best version. If you want the perfect audio accompaniment to the book for your class or at-home use, get the CD "Airs from who knows where" by the Gloucester Hornpipe & Clog Society: on it Diane Taraz sings the terrific, catchy song she co-wrote, "An American Army of Two," which tells the same story. Wow this book kept me reading it,I just couldn't put it down
The Wynd family is a family that has been practicing magic for generations in secrecy.But one day they get in trouble with dragons. How they fool the dragons is what this book is about. This book The Dragon Circle wascool because it was like a little adventure.And I really like to go onadventures so I could kind of relate to the fun.

Brilliant
This is a visual feast for the brain, yet maybe a tad short. His other book in the series, has the children set in a haunted house, I have only read the first two chapters but the same brilliance, shines in this book. In dragon circle I can imagine the scenes that would be shot if this were afeature film, I would like to contact the Author, and propose that heconsider it. A Classic Pooh Story
This is a classic and favorite Pooh story. It's been told many times and it's been seen on television / video. This is a wonderful retelling, adapted by Stephen Krensky (who also does the "Arthur" chapter books) and featuring the original-style illustrations.

In this story, Christopher Robin leads Pooh and our other friends in the Hundred Acre Wood on an expedition, or as Pooh calls it, an "expotition." Some are a bit frightened at first, but they know they're okay as long as Christopher Robin is around.


This is a story of adventure and discovery. It has classic Pooh charm and shouldn't be missed by Pooh fans.

Little Chaucer is really upset at the thought of missing out on winter fun with his friends so when his parents are fast asleep in their cave he slips out and explores his first Winter!

Cute little story and sooo reminds me of how the kids really are at bedtime alot not wanting to go "seepy" wanting to keep playing instead and then when it's time to get up they wanna "seepy"! Has Beautiful illustrations!

With Fall nipping the air we know that Ol' Man Winter's on his way, so it's a perfect time to meet Chaucer, a cuddly little brown bear who is perplexed when his best friends, Nugget and Kit, say, "We're going to miss you a lot."Chaucer wanted to know where he'd be when they were missing him, and was told that he'd be sleeping because that's what bears did.

His parents verified that fact for him - bears slept in the winter.However, Chaucer was not convinced, so when his parents settled down to snooze he went outside.Snow fascinated him, especially the flakes that landed on his nose and tongue."It's magic," he said.

His friends were very surprised to see him, and immediately decided that they had to teach him about snow.Well, save for slipping on the ice Chaucer loved everything about winter and so will young readers as they see it through this little bear's eyes.
