5-0 out of 5 stars How could I have forgotten Little Lulu?
I was shocked to find that my son and daughter-in-law had never heard of Little Lulu -- this startling fact came to light when my husband and I adopted an unusually small MinPin and I named her Little Lulu. The next day I bought this book for my 6-year-old granddaughter. She loved it! So later I bought her another in the series, and she loved that, too. These are good-quality paperbacks; the production values are high. And the stories are charming, bringing back mothers who wore dresses and pumps every day in the house, fathers who dozed in arm-chairs after dinner and called their wives "Dear", and a just slightly old-fashioned America.I don't think our 6-year-old notices any of that. For her Little Lulu is great entertainment; for me, a swirl of nostalgia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the greatest...
I recently finished plowing through the collected paperback editions of the classic 1940s/1950s "Little Lulu" comics, and wanted to put in my vote... yes! yes! yes!True, it's a little disappointing that the strips are reprinted in black-&-white and not in the original color versions, but the real genius of these works is in the draftsmanship of artists John Stanley and Irving Tripp, and once you get onto their wavelength, even these half-size B&W reprints are a pure delight. They can say so much with such economy -- a single panel of Lulu's unbridled mischief can have you laughing your head off, and here, in this multi-volume collection, you've got a real treasure trove of some of the best graphic-art humor produced in the 20th Century.Great stuff, highly recommended, and major kudos to Dark Horse for making this artwork both available and affordable.

5-0 out of 5 stars *THE BEST ONE YET!!!!!*
I think that Little Lulu Volume 7 is the best issue in the whole collection because of the theme and the stories were side-splitting.I can't wait for another Volume of Little Lulu! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mischief, Mayhem & Charm
Little Lulu is a classic comic character, having debuted in 1935, the creation of Marge Buell. For the past 70+ years, this charming, clever, innocent character has been bringing smiles to children and adults alike with her G-rated adventures. In Little Lulu: The Bawlplayers and Other Stories, Lulu and the gang, her friends Alvin, Tubby and others are present to engage in misadventures, sneakiness and rollicking good times. Whether the boys and girls are engaged in psychological warfare or Tubby is trying to steal Lulu's ice cream, the book presents 200 pages of charming vignettes that will amuse children and help transport adults to a simpler time in their lives--or, perhaps, in the world.

The Bawlplayers and Other Stories is a collection taken from original Little Lulu comics, which have aged well and retained their charm even after decades. It is a well made and attractively packaged book harkening back to the days of innocence, not smugness, in comics. It's a nice escape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Installment #20 of a superb reprint series
The 20th package of reprinted hijinks from John Stanley and Irving Tripp -- this one covering Dell's LITTLE LULU #94-#99 (1956) -- is just as enjoyable as all those that have come before, though Stanley's weariness is slowly becoming apparent. This is best seen in the "Witch Hazel" stories, which seem more and more perfunctory; surely Stanley could've found SOME other way to match Lulu against Hazel and Little Itch that didn't involve a shabbily-dressed Lulu picking beebleberries? Some of Stanley's plot hooks are getting a little "out there," as well. The collection's very first story, "Two Foots is Feet," has Lulu and Alvin driving each other into hysterics by repeating the words "foot" and "feet" over and over again. Alvin I can buy, but the level-headed Lulu going gaga over something so silly is harder for me to accept. Lulu is in much better form in a story in which she pesters a new boy in town, promising not to introduce him to any other girls. Funny stuff, as always.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Lule - in color, too!
I was pleasantly surprised to received the album in color, since other books in the Little Lulu collection are in B&W. Good stories, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars a delight for all ages
I'm thrilled someone was intelligent enough to re-release these gems.I grew up on little Lulu comics as a child and I am enjoying them as much (if not more) in my middle age.The humour is good clean fun and anyone can relate to the childhood experiences captured in the stories. Some of the situations they get into are just hilarious. The earlier black & white editions were good, however, these full colour editions are superb. The paper is glossy and good quality and they will surely last for another generation to enjoy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Cast-Iron Man Rides Again
First, let me say that I have a pro-Calhoun bias, not because of his stance of slavery, but rather because through sheer strength and tenacity he was able to elevate himself to a place in government and history. Calhoun started by working hard at Yale to succeed in spite of his disadvantages. Once he did, he would then work hard to make a name for himself in politics, as Secretary of War, Vice-President, and Senator. He did this through hard work, a brilliant intellect, and unending commitment to his identity and lifestyle. The commitment to his identity and lifestyle is what I admire in the man, and Bartlett captures that with a great zest. All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the era leading tot he Civil War, or men of principle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but distant biography
After reading this biography of John Calhoun, I had completed reading about the lives of the "Great Triumvirate" of Webster, Clay and Calhoun who, as Representatives, Senators and Secretaries of State were the most dominant non-Presidents in early-19th Century America.

Each of the Triumvirate had their assets and their flaws. As this biography illustrates, Calhoun's great assets were his integrity and his intellect; his great flaws included his inflexibility and his adherence to promoting and continuing slavery.

As a biography goes, this one is good but not great. It is a generally well-written work, but Bartlett has a tendency to speculate as to what Calhoun and others were thinking at particular moments and let a pro-Calhoun bias sometimes remove the objectivity from his work.Despite this, I still did not feel I could really relate to Calhoun, who comes off kind of remote.

Overall, there is more good than bad in this book, however, and as an introduction to an important historical figure, this is a worthwhile read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Biography on a Great American
John Calhoun is probably one of the most interesting Americans to ever serve his country. A member of the American troika that included Clay and Webster, Calhoun was a staunch states right and slavery advocate. This bookbegins by examining Calhoun's youth and how his father Patrick instilledhis virtues in his son. Calhoun went to Yale and later law school inConnecticut. Calhoun was then elected to the U.S. House of Representativesat the time of the 1812 disagreements with Britain. Calhoun was to remainin politics until his death almost 40 years later. Calhoun served as aRepresentative, Vice-president, Senator, and Secretary of War and State. The book is at its best when it details Calhoun attacking the status quo, something he did often. In fact, with todays sell-outs that we callpoliticians, it's nice to see that someone once stood up for what hebelieved in. Bartlett spends some time pointing out Calhoun's ironies--oneof which was that as great a man as he was, his kids were spoiled brats.Only one of his children was up to his immense intellect, and that was hisdaughter Anna. Since women didn't have careers in the 19th century, shecouldn't follow him into politics. Try and find this book at the library ifAmazon doesn't get it in stock. ... Read more

Product Description
Recent inroads in higher-dimensional nonlinear quantum field theory and in the global theory of relevant nonlinear wave equations have been accompanied by very interesting cognate developments. These developments include symplectic quantization theory on manifolds and in group representations, the operator algebraic implementation of quantum dynamics, and differential geometric, general relativistic, and purely algebraic aspects. Quantization and Nonlinear Wave Equations thus was highly appropriate as the theme for the first John von Neumann Symposium (June 1994) held at MIT. The symposium was intended to treat topics of emerging signifigance underlying future mathematical developments.

This book describes the outstanding recent progress in this important and challenging field and presents general background for the scientific context and specifics regarding key difficulties. Quantization is developed in the context of rigorous nonlinear quantum field theory in four dimensions and in connection with symplectic manifold theory and random Schrödinger operators. Nonlinear wave equations are exposed in relation to recent important progress in general relativity, in purely mathematical terms of microlocal analysis, and as represented by progress on the relativistic Boltzmann equation.

Most of the developments in this volume appear in book form for the first time. The resulting work is a concise and informative way to explore the field and the spectrum of methods available for its investigation. ... Read more

Product Description
Motorcycling as Spiritual Adventure

It was love at first sight. Perhaps it was recognition at first sight, as when two friends separated for a long time meet once more and resume where they left off. Whatever “it” was, John and I were astounded and unprepared. However having found one another, we resolved to journey together. Innocently we set off, not foreseeing we would meander through strange landscapes; terrifying emotional ones of jealousy and fear, blissful ones of perfect understanding, crazy kaleidoscopes of coming and going through exotic cities, pastoral countryside, dessert, ocean, field and mountain. Nor did we know that, as in every life, these spiritual, emotional, and physical territories would weave themselves indistinguishably together.

John and I were born into military families whose peripatetic lifestyle bred wanderlust into our bones. We’ve lived in seven countries on four continents, explored all over the globe and have visited or resided in most of our own fifty states. For twelve years the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been home but wherever we sink temporary roots, to travel has been our passion.

Given this preference for an itinerant life style, it isn’t surprising that John’s work as an airline captain is also his joy. To fly is to travel constantly and to live with a pilot is to share many of those travels.

Our explorations teach us that no excursion remains simple; no undertaking is only one dimension. The more we learn this, the more enamored of travel we become, seeing a significance in each trip that reverberates through the days following our return.

Most of our jaunts have been short voyages circumscribed by the requirements of work or family. Rewarding as these have been, we have longed for a real journey; a lengthy excursion through new territory, combining the qualities of pilgrimage, adventure, distance and renewal.

Some people have a “dream house”, John and I have always had a “dream trip.” Incipient builders, planning over a number of years, change dimension and style as their tastes change. We too changed our minds about which route to take but as often as the itinerary changed the mode of transportation remained the same — a motorcycle.

I learned to love motorcycles on the back of a boyfriend’s bike during my freshman year at Penn State. The rides on Jim’s motorcycle seemed incredibly daring, adventuresome to me and his unconventional vehicle became associated in my mind with all the freedom and exhilaration inherent in leaving home for the first time.

Having already humored one aficionado, it didn’t surprise me when our honeymoon turned into a bike trip despite having expected something different. When John’s mother, Mary Lou, gave us a trip to Puerto Rico as a wedding present, I envisioned languid days on the beach followed by dancing under the stars and packed accordingly. Instead, wearing John’s rolled up trousers, I toured the island on the back of a rented Kawasaki dirt bike. It set a precedence for the rest of our marriage and inspired us to envision the perfect trip. We’ve spent many hours since, imagining the excursion.

During the early years we wanted to blast through the Pyrenees on agile Italian Ducatis. No autobahns for us, the twistier, steeper and wilder the road the better; we longed for bouillabaisse, red wine and fast bikes. Or drive from Tierra del Fuego to Fairbanks or take a year or two off and circumnavigate Africa with the babies strapped to our backs. Poverty and ambition delayed and frustrated these grand schemes but there were lots of short trips on second-hand bikes we rented, borrowed or bought. Although we never got as far south as Magellan did, the world opened to us and we traveled extensively. Even so, John and I continued to fantasize about a series of long, leisurely motorcycle journeys. As time went on, though, and we began to dream of crossing our own continent.

Product Description
For many years, Gunter Grass (born 1927) has been one of the world's most vital literary figures. From the publication of The Tin Drum through his latest pleas for sane government and civil treatment of Germany's "foreign citizens" in the 1990s, Grass has been at the forefront of both literary and political worlds. This representative volume features two important works: Cat and Mouse and The Meeting at Telgte. Both speak to our time, but under very different settings. It also includes a selection of other works to give a well-rounded view of a writer whom John Irving characterizes in his foreword as "the greatest living novelist today".

The German Library is a new series of the major works of German literature and thought from medieval times to the present. The volumes have forewords by internationally known writers and introductions by prominent scholars. Here the English-speaking reader can find the broadest possible collection of poetic and intellectual achievements in new as well as great classic translations. Convenient and accessible in format, the volumes of The German Library will form the core of any growing library of European literature for years to come. Select list of volumes now published:

-- German Medieval Tales -- German Humanism and Reformation -- Immanuel Kant: Philosophical Writings -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: The Sufferings of Young Werther and Elective Affinities -- Friedrich Schiller: Plays -- "Intrigue and Love" and "Don Carlos" -- Friedrich Schiller: "Wallenstein" and "Mary Stuart" -- German Fairy Tales -- German Literary Fairy Tales -- German Romantic Novellas -- German Romantic Stories -- German Novellas of Realism -- German Poetry from 1750 to 1900 -- Georg Buchner: Complete Works and Letters -- Rainer Maria Rilke: Prose and Poetry -- Gottfried Benn: Prose, Essays, Poems -- German Essays on Art History -- Essays on German Theater -- Hans Magnus Enzensberger: Critical Essays ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for Grass Readers
I was ensnared into reading this book by the promising name of the author. While I do not regret having read this book, I do not think that this does measure up to the'Tin Drum'. If you are planning to read Grass for the first time, tehn this is not the book to get started with.

Some people, especially those who can not find fault with anything, least of all with literature, might say that the humor here is subtle as compared with the humor of the 'Tin Drum' where it was more ribald. To use the word 'subtle' in that sense would be more a misuse of the term than anything else. The humor remains dark here. The background remains war and nazi Germany. But still the main the theme is that of an adolescent hero (Mahlke) and hero-worship by the narrator (Pilenz) and others.

It would be a fair asumption that most of us have had some heroes during our school days. Therefore it is not too difficult to identify with the theme and the narrator of this book. The narrator here is Pilenz and his hero is Joachim Mahlke. Mahlke is a catholic teenager with an abnormally protruding Adams apple. He is a year older than the rest of the group. He is the best swimmer and diver and he often spends his time in a barge nearby the shore that went down during the war. He has the largest penis in the group and he is the most prolific masturbator. But he generally stays away from adulation. After a daring stealing act whereby he stole a nazi-German officer who was visiting his school, he gets expelled from hisand the narrator's school. Later he joins the army and becomes a tanker. There also, he becomes a hero all of which is told in a 3rd persons voice. After his first furlough, he decides not to turn up for his military work again. Then an intrusting climax.

Throughout the novel, you have the nazi Germany and the unmentionable fuhrer as the background. The cruelty of that age is not explicitly stated here. It is amazing now for us , blessed with the advantage of hind sight, to observe that most ofthe Germans of that age did not recognize the fundamental evil of what they were supporting. They still had cold winters, they still had flowers bloom in spring, they still had wonderful swimming seasons in summer. The nazi youth's childhood was as naughty and gloomy as ours. Nothing was different, yet everything was fundamentally different. It is equally important in this context to note that the very reason for which our hero turns a deserter was not that he found out that he found war to be evil. It was more due to a combination of fear and boredom.

The prose here is at most times banal, unimaginative and boring. Compare that with the wit and intelligence of `Tin Drum'. Only the descriptions of the church rituals and the sentences where all words are combined without period, commas etc remain the same.

I would recommend this book to someone who has already read Grass. If you are a first timer to Grass, start with the ` Tin Drum'. Otherwise, you would develop an `anti Grass ' syndrome. Finally I must admit to be a Grass admirer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tea Party, American Revolution and Adams Brought to Life
Amazing read.Learned more that I ever have in any history or law class. Starts a little slow with intricate details of the Puritans then really pulls you into their daily lives and struggles. The author vividly brings the main and surrounding characters to life. This biographical novel tells the amazing story of Abagail, John and their families. If enjoy novels or wonder where today's Tea Party got it's origins, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Have To Read This One
I first read this book years ago in paperback, but lost it while moving around the country. It remained one of my favorite books (love story) of all time. Recently, I found it in a nice, used, hardcover edition. It now sits proudly on the shelf with my classic literature. The author did a wonderful job at telling the story of John and Abigail Adams, their deep and enduring love for each other, and also their love for a new nation. You will NOT be disappointed in this book. 5+ stars!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars To see the early nation in a different light
I would have never picked up this book on my own to read, but because I recently joined a new book club, and this book was the pick for themonth, I reluctantly began reading it. I never expected to like it, and I certainly never expected to make it through its 600 plus pages in just a few weeks.

The book shows readers a different side of the life of one of our founding fathers, John Adams, as told through the eyes of his wife. While I have taught government classes and led discussions about the founding fathers, never have I read about them in such an intimate and personal way. This book shows us the John Adams that his wife Abagail, called Nabby, knew and loved. It gives a human face to one of the men often given superhuman qualities in historical texts about the early history of our nation and our founding fathers.

I really enjoyed it, and you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Adams - A Joy to Know
When I first read this book many years ago, I fell in love with John Adams. Stone brought to life not only this most honorable of our founding fathers, and his beloved wife Abigail, but other "characters" of our nation's revolutionary history such as Samuel Adams, a rabble-rouser who was afraid to ride horses. So many intimate details of John and Abigails's life together were brought to this novel that you feel as though you know and love them both. You can't go wrong with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's so romantic
"Those Who Love" got me hooked on the saga of John and AbigailAdams. Thiers was a true love match that endured through joy and pain, triumph and trajedy. Stone's sprawling novel follows the pair from thierspirited first meeting, through the hellish American Revolution, and intothe turbulent White House years. A fantastic read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A broad survey of twenteith century art
Based on the work in the SBC Collection, which has nearly 1,000 works of American art of the twentieth century, American Images provides a survey of art of that period. The thirteen essays take us roughly chronologically through the art of twentieth century using as reference points the work in the collection. From realist work we progress through Modernism with abstract and Cubist influences, Pop and Minimalism, to the diversity of the close of the century.

The book also contains a (selected) Catalogue of Work held in the collection, and a Bibliography arranged to follow the pattern of the essays. The essays themselves are illustrated with 72 black and white pictures, and there are 160 colour plates to be found following the relevant essays. Some 400 thumbnail black and white pictures illustrate the Catalogue of Work.

An informative book covering a wide range of work both two and occasionally three dimensional art, it is well illustrated. Perhaps some of the images could be larger, a number of the colour plates are reproduced quite small relative to the page size for no good reason, and of course the landscape pictures do not fair too well either on the portrait proportion page. There are however a few double-page spreads and a fair number of good sized images.

While there are many familiar names included in the survey and some familiar works of art, there are also many less familiar pieces, adding greatly to the appeal of the book.
