The publication of the Sonnets was in a manner forced, if we are to credit the Author's statement in his preface to the first edition (1592). The reference is to the quasi-surreptitious edition of Sir Philip Sidney's ' Astrophel and Stella" of 1591, the " rascally bookseller " being Thomas Newman, and the editor no less than Thomas Nashe.
