Excerpt: Richard Sharpe is the central character in Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series of historical fiction stories. These formed the basis for an ITV television series wherein the eponymous character was played by Sean Bean. Cornwell's series (composed of several novels and short stories) charts Sharpe's progress in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. He begins as a Private in Sharpe's Tiger, he then becomes a Sergeant by the end of the book, He then becomes an Ensign in the 74th Regiment and he was promoted to lieutenant in the 95th Rifles during Sharpe's Trafalgar and was gradually promoted to a field commission of Lieutenant Colonel in Sharpe's Waterloo. The stories dramatise his struggle for acceptance and respect from his fellow officers and from the men he commands. Sharpe was born a guttersnipe in the rookeries of London. Promoted on the battlefield, he leaves his own class behind to take a commission in an army where rank is usually bought. Unlike many of the officers he serves with, Sharpe knows how to fight. Sharpe is described as "brilliant but wayward" in Sharpe's Sword, and is acknowledged by the author to be a loose cannon. A highly skilled leader of light troops, he takes part in a wide array of historical events during the Napoleonic Wa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=445710 ... Read more

Product Description
1820s Britain: after the wars with France, when unemployment was high and soldiers could be paid off, when the government was desperately afraid of social unrest, any crime was drastically punished and thousands were hung. But one could petition the King and an investigation might ensue! The man in the dark cell in Newgate Prison was due to hang in a week. He had been found guilty of murdering the aristocrat whose portrait he was painting. He claimed to be innocent -- but then the hangman had never hung a guilty man, he said. But even in 1820, the Home Secretary could occasionally use his powers to grant mercy if his investigator found cause and Rider Sandman, once of the First Foot Guards, is given the job.Rider Sandman, a hero of Waterloo, has family debts to repay but when his first steps in the investigations produce a sizeable bribe to look the other way, this only arouses his smouldering anger over the condition of England, a country which he and others in Wellington's army had fought to preserve.Stepping between gentlemen's clubs and taverns, talking to aristocrats, fashionable painters, their models, and their mistresses, dodging professional cut-throats and deceptive swordsmen, Sandman uncovers a conspiracy of silence, a group whose proudest boast was that they would do anything for any one of them.Sandman is a wonderful character, as yet undaunted by the sleazy streets, dank jails or the looming scaffold, and uncorrupted by politicians, sneering gentlemen or frightening bruisers, an investigator in the making and a brilliant, but very different, hero for all Bernard Cornwell fans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Save the Best for the Last
I first became interested in Bernard Cornwell reading the Saxon Chronicles of the Last Kingdom, but I realize that the Arthurian Chronicles are a whole lot more fun. Excalibur sure beats them all. I think the part when he helped his son from Merlin was quite good. Also, the war with Mordred. In earlier books, we always thought Mordred was a wimp and couldn't quite see him become a formidable rival to Arthur. In a way, Arthur may have perpetruated his own end. Who would allow such a powerful man to live in peace?

4-0 out of 5 stars A fitting end to the Warlord Chronicles
In the third and final episode of his Warlord Chronicles Cornwell wraps up all the loose ends, like what happened to Derfel's hand.He also returns to the more traditional telling to find his ending for the Arthur story.I found the ending of the Arthur portion of the tale very satisfying but was a little disappointed in the ending the Cornwell wrote for Derfel. In the end Derfel is a warrior again which is the way I am sure my friend would have wanted it but I really wanted Derfel to have one last glorious triumph to end his tale.I guess that would have been impossible as Derfel is the author of the story, life is inexorable. All in all a great ending to a wonderful and much more believable and satisfying retelling of the Arthurian legend. P.S. If you are looking for the Holy Grail, check out the "Archer's Tale" another great series by Cornwell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant performance
This was the best audio book I've ever heard. It was like watching a film, as you experienced the story and never felt you were just being read to.I would recommend this audio book - with reader Richard Armitage - to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance! This is the version to have.
I've listened to all of Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series in audiobook format (and read them in hardcover, too) and this is the best of them all. Richard Armitage's reading is vastly superior to the other narrators (Tom Sellwood, Jamie Glover, and Gerard Doyle). Mr. Armitage is a master storyteller. His narration does not sound like the book is being read (as it sometimes does in the other versions) -- it's being performed -- no, it's lived. The pacing is impressive -- calm and contemplative when required, intense and passionate for the action sequences. He adds just the right level of humor (sometimes wry but without too much sarcasm) which is sorely lacking in the other audiobooks.

Mr. Armitage's range of voices and accents is astonishing. He's lucky to have such flexible vocal chords to be able to go high enough yet gentle for the women and children and never sounds false or forced. Hild, Gisela and Thyra are particularly wonderful, exuding patience, passion and rage. I lost count of the number of male voices he created but the range is stunning -- some very bass, some very tenor -- age, class and region all incorporated so smoothly that at times I forgot that one person was creating them all. Every voice, even the least incidental ones, has a distinct character.

It's a shame that Amazon doesn't sell this version but you can get it through audiobookcollection{.com}. This company is in the UK but they do ship overseas. I truly hope that Mr. Armitage will be available to record an unabridged version of Sword Song, the next book in the series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical fiction
For some unknown reason, most of the reviews are listed under the Kindle edition, even though it is the same story. It is always interesting to read about my Saxon and Danish ancestors. My ancestors always seemed to fight with each other, but enough survived to have descendents. The story makes you wonder how they lived through the time period. Some were like myself, i.e., they had no desire to be a king, but others had ambitions to seize a throne.

The present novel gives us further adventures of Uhtred. There is no particular ending to the novel, and the author writes these novels somewhat like his Sharpe novels where the characters continue though a long series of battles. Many of the main events were real, and many of the main characters were real. The life styles and people's attitudes are well researched. ... Product Description
Created from first-hand written accounts and contemporary military manuals of the time, this text presents an insight into the nitty-gritty of everyday life for the British soldier in wartime leading up to the Battle of Waterloo. It includes photos of original items of equipment and of modern day re-enactment groups, revealing what it was really like for ordinary soldiers and their camp followers. Find out how the rifle developed from the musket; what kit the soldiers carried; how they kept dry in the mountains of Spain; what they ate; how the infantry faced charging cavalry; what the battlefield was like after "victory". Re-enactment is a growing "family" activity, so there were plenty of troops and "camp followers" to help the author illustrate the lives of the men and indeed the women and children who accompanied the regiments on campaign. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Starbuck Chronicles read by a wonderful narrator - Tom Parker
I finally tore myself away from my Sharpe's audiobooks and listened to the four (so far) audiobooks for the Starbuck Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell and read by Tom Parker.I didn't think I'd be that interested in another Civil War story, but these are terrific.I've listened to all four several times now - unabridged.Mr. Parker does great accents and the characters just come alive.Rebel is probably the weakest of the four, but once you get into it, it's hard to resist.I just hope Mr. Cornwell hurries and writes the next one to put me out of my misery! ...
