4-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase
I Love this book, it was a bit used more than I it would be but its still great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Soothing Touch ofSouthern Beauty to Display and Enjoy Over and Over Again
I purchased the book "The Art of Jonathan Green' with the desire to capture and keep some of the southern charm felt and beauty witnessed on a recent visit to Charleston, South Carolina. The book is simply amazing from cover to cover. It is one to be displayed so that all can be captured by the beautiful imagery that reaches from beyond and through each page and touches the soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grace
It is given to particular artists to do the impossible. Claude Monet paints light. Andrew Wyeth paints time passing. You can hear Jonathan Green's paintings. In "Bessie Mae", he paints not only the singer, the song itself springs from the canvas."Silence With The Birds" transfixes the mind, making common imagery so new that you may as well have just been born. Green belongs with those rare artists whose work leaves you seeing and feeling the world in a new way. You can spend an hour with this book, go for a walk and see fresh grace in the movement of the human body, sense something new in your step. All that and more, you will find in this book. There is in every painting the identifiable signature and the present quest -something that goes to your belly, and makes you whole. This is world-class art, visionary, accomplished, redemptive. Green's work expresses the spirit of a people who endured hundreds of years of brutal oppression, created the greatest religious songs in the language and fought a revolution without guns. Here is love, made visible. As in Rilke's poem about Apollo: 'You must change your life."

5-0 out of 5 stars a beautiful book
a beautiful book of green's work
if you are a fan of his artwork--this book is an excellent compilation in both presentation and accompanying text

5-0 out of 5 stars Jonathan Green's art is a quite simply a celebration
of color and of life. His vivid paintings make you feel glad to be alive ... Read more

Product Description
"If there's one thing we learned coming up on Daufuskie," remembers Sallie Ann Robinson, "it's the importance of good, home-cooked food." In this enchanting book, Robinson presents the delicious, robust dishes of her native Sea Islands and offers readers a taste of the unique, West African-influenced Gullah culture still found there.

Living on a South Carolina island accessible only by boat, Daufuskie folk have traditionally relied on the bounty of fresh ingredients found on the land and in the waters that surround them. The one hundred home-style dishes presented here include salads and side dishes, seafood, meat and game, rice, quick meals, breads, and desserts. Gregory Wrenn Smith's photographs evoke the sights and tastes of Daufuskie.

"Here are my family's recipes," writes Robinson, weaving warm memories of the people who made and loved these dishes and clear instructions for preparing them. She invites readers to share in the joys of Gullah home cooking the Daufuskie way, to make her family's recipes their own. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great on stories short on cookin
This book is long on stories and short on seasoned cooking. Most are bland.Good history though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good "Lowcountry Cooking"
This is a wonderful cookbook if you want to learn how to prepare what some South Carolinians call "Lowcountry" fare.I made the Fried Crab Rice on a couple of occasions, for my family and my co-workers and for both groups it was a hit!In Charleston, SC one dish that is hot on the restaurants' menu is Shrimp and gravy, well Sally teaches you how to make this dish. The best thing about this cookbook - the recipes are easy to prepare.I really enjoy the Author's entertaining comments about growing up on Daufuskie Island, which is off the coast of South Carolina. This cookbook is a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vacation, Visit, or Visceral Living
If you are not yet blessed with living on South Carolina's Daufuskie Island or even a vacation here, reading and eating from Sallie Ann's recipes is the next best thing.Enjoy!

Product Description
First Edition. Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston 1986. Good/Good condition. Overall book and jacket are in real good condition. Book looks almost unread. Probably Conroy's most memorable novel, made into the 1991 movie with Nick Nolte, Barbra Streisand, Melinda Dillon, Blyth Danner, and Kate Nelligan, and directed by Streisand. It's a gut-level story of a family's intense dysfunctional pain rediscovery, realization, romance - all kinds of R's in this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING Service and Product
I bought a coveted book, The Prince of Tides, on-line with Amazon.Least expensive, perfect condition, easy transaction, fast shipment, everything exactly as described. How good can it get?No better than this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prince of Tides
This book is a compelling read; one of those rare books that one cannot put down, and at the end, feels a sad nostalgia. The story is deep and a bit complicated, but far superior to the movie of the same title, which starred Streisand and Nolte.Conroy is a genius of our language, writing in a poetic yet brutally honest style, which challenges one's vocabulary on every page.I loved it! ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The publishing event of the season: The one and only Pat Conroy returns, with a big, sprawling novel that is at once a love letter to Charleston and to lifelong friendship.Against the sumptuous backdrop of Charleston, South Carolina, South of Broad gathers a unique cast of sinners and saints. Leopold Bloom King, our narrator, is the son of an amiable, loving father who teaches science at the local high school. His mother, an ex-nun, is the high school principal and a well-known Joyce scholar. After Leo's older brother commits suicide at the age of thirteen, the family struggles with the shattering effects of his death, and Leo, lonely and isolated, searches for something to sustain him. Eventually, he finds his answer when he becomes part of a tightly knit group of high school seniors that includes friends Sheba and Trevor Poe, glamorous twins with an alcoholic mother and a prison-escapee father; hardscrabble mountain runaways Niles and Starla Whitehead; socialite Molly Huger and her boyfriend, Chadworth Rutledge X; and an ever-widening circle whose liaisons will ripple across two decades-from 1960s counterculture through the dawn of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s.The ties among them endure for years, surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, and Charleston's dark legacy of racism and class divisions. But the final test of friendship that brings them to San Francisco is something no one is prepared for. South of Broad is Pat Conroy at his finest; a long-awaited work from a great American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Conroy in South of Broad
Pat Conroy has provided an intriguing plot that incoorporateswell-developed, evolving characters with a map of Charleston, old and new, that calls me back to visit the Holy City. He ties up all the loose ends, dramatically and fully moving his characters fluidly through 30 years.... all written in delicious and sometimes edgy prose. Well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reader is obviously not from Charleston
I have picked up this book a few times and started reading with delight but because of some other things I want to read, I decided that this book might be best listened to on cd.I was enjoying it until I realized the reader of the book is mispronouncing the Charleston name of Huger. He is saying something akin to Huggie when the word should be pronouced just like the two letters U-G.You would think they would have taken a moment to get that right. It has taken away some of the enjoyment of the book because anyone familiar with Charleston would know how to pronounce the word.Perhaps someone in the know should have been on hand whilst recording.I am shocked to think that Mr. Conroy would allow this to be recorded under his name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best work yet!
All of Mr. Conroy's works are superb but I think for sheer enjoyment, this is the best. ... Read more
