1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
I enjoyed Fanny, by this author, quite a bit.I was expecting something similar with this novel, a sweet, clean romance. The writing was still good, but that's where the similarities ended. This story was far from sweet or clean. If you don't mind the hero having mistresses while married to the heroine, or the author using a sexually depraved scene to show you how evil the villian is, this book might work for you.But this was definitely not the book for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth Character Study
This is a well-written, interesting, and unusual love story.

On the surface, it is a standard Regency marriage of convenience story:Beautiful young heroine marries rich handsome lord in marriage arranged by Father. But almost immediately, the author takes you into the complex, emotional life of this young woman. The story takes some unexpected twists and turns on the way to true love.

It develops into an in-depth character study of the heroine, the hero, and several of the supporting characters as well, which is amazing in such a short book.

All of the characters seem familiar, but none of them are quite the stock characters you expect.

It is one of my keepers that I re-read and it made me want to find other books by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written account of the status of women in the Regency.
If you are a fan of Regency novels, FIND A COPY OF THIS BOOK.It is oneof the best in the genre.

This is an extremely well-written account ofthe role and status of women during the Regency period.Ms. Clarkeskillfully weaves socio-economic and psychology lessons into a veryaffecting book. These are characters you grow to care about.Even the"not so nice" characters are presented in full dimension.Nocookie-cutter bad guys here.

It is one of the few in the genre that Ihave re-read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Regency!
Mallory inherits the job of caring for spirited girls, twins, whowere not that much younger than Mallory. This story is tight, fast-paced, endearing, and humorous in well-placed areas. Mallory is a strong lead character, a great romantic interest--if only her heart's target would not be so fast to web another woman...
Highly recommend reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Regency
Dilys Byrn had been in love with Travis Gallant since she was a young girl. He was in love with her adopted sister. She thought she'd never see him again. But when things changed and he came back into her life, she loved him more than ever.

I liked this book. The characters were good. My main complaint was the old story of the debutante who also writes a novel that takes London by storm, fears losing her anonymity, and gets found out. That's overdone, I think.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful innocent plots to win a perilous prize in love
Dilys Byrn had been an inexperienced, easily infatuate young girl when she fell head over heels in love with handsome and dashing Lord Travis Gallant. But Dilys had reached the reasoable age of marriage now, and should have had enough good sense to forget the man who had become the most notorious rake in London. Yet while the most eligible gentleman of the ton courted her, Dilys courted scandal by clinging to her impossible dream of love. A very interesting book and worth the effort. ... Read more

Product Description

Ranging from the novels of James Fenimore Cooper to Louis L'Amour, and from classic films like Stagecoach to spaghetti Westerns like A Fistful of Dollars, Mitchell shows how Westerns helped assuage a series of crises in American culture. This landmark study shows that the Western owes its perennial appeal not to unchanging conventions but to the deftness with which it responds to the obsessions and fears of its audience. And no obsession, Lee Mitchell argues, has figured more prominently in the Western than what it means to be a man.

"Elegantly written. . . . provocative . . . characterized by [Mitchell's] own tendency to shoot from the hip."—J. Hoberman, London Review of Books

"[Mitchell's] book would be worth reading just for the way he relates Benjamin Spock's Baby and Child to the postwar Western."—The Observer

"Integrating a careful handling of historical context with a keen eye for textual nuances, Mitchell reconstructs the Western's aesthetic tradition of the 19th century."—Aaron M. Wehner, San Francisco Review

Excellent book that relates a very specific and particualr genre like the western with a very wide source of refernces, from baby care to painting. It has a very good historical background that helps understand the obsession of gender and sex in the western genre.I particularly enjoyed the chapter where the author talks about Leone's living dead, it seems like if Jim Jarmusch had read it carefully for his "dead man". ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Although highly regarded during his short life--and honored by artists and architects today--the American artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-78) has been largely ignored within the history of art. Matta-Clark is best remembered for site-specific projects known as "building cuts." Sculptural transformations of architecture produced through direct cuts into buildings scheduled for demolition, these works now exist only as sculptural fragments, photographs, and film and video documentations. Matta-Clark is also remembered as a catalytic force in the creation of SoHo in the early 1970s. Through loft activities, site projects at the exhibition space 112 Greene Street, and his work at the restaurant Food, he participated in the production of a new social and artistic space. Have art historians written so little about Matta-Clark's work because of its ephemerality, or, as Pamela M. Lee argues, because of its historiographic, political, and social dimensions? What did the activity of carving up a building-in anticipation of its destruction--suggest about the conditions of art making, architecture, and urbanism in the 1970s? What was one to make of the paradox attendant on its making--that the production of the object was contingent upon its ruination? How do these projects address the very writing of history, a history that imagines itself building toward an ideal work in the service of progress? In this first critical account of Matta-Clark's work, Lee considers it in the context of the art of the 1970s--particularly site-specific, conceptual, and minimalist practices--and its confrontation with issues of community, property, the alienation of urban space, the "right to the city," and the ideologies of progress that have defined modern building programs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Artist. Nearly Great Book.
This book is about all there is on this guy. Kudos to Pamela Lee for sticking her neck out and getting a book out on him. It's WAY overdue. At times the analogies and stuff are a bit tiring... though maybe I mowed through it in too much of one sitting.

This guy cut up buildings and would jack parts of them up with foundation jacks for chrissakes. Damien Hirst on steriods 20 years early.

5-0 out of 5 stars an object to be preserved
Gordon Matta-Clark is one of those artists largely understood lightly, if at all, partially because of the lack of coverage of his work in most of art history. Lee's book goes a long way toward building a scholarship ofG.M-C's work, especially in terms of its conceptual and analyticalunderpinnings.

When seen in conjunction with P.S. 1's retrospective ofhis drawings in 1998, and the recent republication of the only bigmonograph, G.M-C seems poised to be included in newer histories of art, which does a great service to everyone.

I read a good chunk of this bookflying from JFK to SFO, and I found it to be well-written, cogent, andcompelling as a document of G.M-C's work. I came away inspired. Hopefullyhis films will be the next portion of his oeuvre to be rereleased. ... Read more

Product Description
In this wise, stimulating, and deeply personal book, an eminent jazz chronicler writes of his encounters with four great black musicians: Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Milt Hinton, and Nat "King" Cole. Equal parts memoir, oral history, and commentary, each of the main chapters is a minibiography, weaving together conversations Gene Lees had with the musicians and their families, friends, and associates over a period of several decades.Lees begins the book with an essay that tells of his introduction to the world of jazz and his reaction to racism in the United States when he emigrated from Canada in 1955. The underlying theme in his book is the impact racism had on the four musicians' lives and careers and their determination to overcome it. As Lees writes, "No white person can even begin to understand the black experience in the United States. . . . All [of the four jazz makers] are men who had every reason to embrace bitterness--and didn't." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars first class service
A very efficient service, received the book promptly. I could confidently recommend the seller in the future

3-0 out of 5 stars You Can't Steal a Central Idea
Two caveats with this book:(1) It was reviewed in The Economist as being for the general reader, but it really is meant for the jazz aficionado. There is a lot of name-dropping, and lists of albums and songs that might as well have been Sumerian kings to me.(2) The jacket misleads when it says "the underlying theme in his book is the impact racism had on the four musicians' lives and careers and their determination to overcome it."I agree with the other reviewer who complains that Lees sometimes thinks it's still 1955 (with regard to race)-maybe an effect of his Canadian upbringing-but there's not too much of this. The real problem is that there IS no underlying theme. This book goes all over the place, and I DO mean even within each separate chapter/biography.

But the vignettes of these four great artists' lives in mid-century are often quite memorable anyway.Oral history, biography, music criticism, history of the Prohibition period, anecdotes of racism; cameo appearances by Jackie Gleason, Cab Calloway, and Louis Armstrong; there's a lot of interesting stuff here.Think of it as a magazine with most of the articles running together.

5-0 out of 5 stars An accurate history of great musicians
First- and second-person history as practised by Gene Lees and Nat Hentoff is accurate, human, informative, entertaining and deeply satisfying. It is also a refreshing palliative to the third- and fourth-hand histories that often pass for fact nowadays. To refer to Lees' writings on race as "ranting," as one reviwer has it, with that word's connotation of violence, polarizes the matter and misrepresents the thought and care that have gone into this book's discussion of race. To "skip all that," would be to remain ignorant and in denial of what it took for the four subjects of the book to achieve their status in the pantheon of American artists. Don't skip all that: read the whole thing to learn, from the artists themselves and the people close to them, more about Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Milt Hinton and Nat King Cole and to understand the social environment they lived and worked in.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed but nice
This is a fun read, essays on four jazz greats based largely on personal recollections. But there is just too much of the author, a failing in all of Lees' books. We must endure his rantings on race (the man still thinks it's 1955) and politics. Indeed, race is the focus for the book, even at times overshadowing the musicians and jazz.Skip all of that, and there is much to learn and to be enjoyed. ... Read more
