3-0 out of 5 stars Marlowe's poems
The Everyman's Poetry edition of Christopher Marlowe's poetry is a nice collection. With extensive notes and a lengthy introduction dealing with Marlowe's work and life, it is an excellent resource for students and admirers of Marlowe alike.

As for Marlowe's poetry itself, it can be quite tedious.Steeped in rhetoric and mythology, the long poems drone on for page after pretentious page.Personally, I prefer Marlowe's plays to his poetry but both formats show him to be a cerebral and skilled author. In short, the book is not for the casual reader.

Also of note, the vast majority of the book is made up of Marlowe's translations of other works.

4-0 out of 5 stars the sun's flame-bearing chariot
Marlowe's gifts as a dramatist are easily matched by his poetic accomplishments in other genres. While some may find his declamatory style and tendency toward bombast wearying in the plays, it is perfectly suited to the frieze-like beauties of HERO AND LEANDER, and particularly to the rhetorical excesses of Lucan, whose first book Marlowe translated "line for line." And few translations of Ovid AMORES capture his eroticism and wit as well as Marlowe's. A must-have selection of poems, convenient and affordable, although the apparatus and notes are not as helpful as those in the Penguin edition (now sadly out of print) edited by Stephen Orgel. ... Product Description

When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin of Apollo 11 stepped on to the surface of the moon in July 1969, it marked the pinnacle of eight years of manned spaceflight. Eight short years saw not only incredible technological advancement, but also the unbelievable bravery of an elite team of astronauts who rode the most powerful rockets ever devised. The space race had been in response to JFK’s promise to the nation and the need to beat the Russians at all costs at a time of intense political rivalry. But victory came at a terrible price with the disastrous Apollo 1 launch-pad fire that killed three astronauts and the dramatic, ill-fated Apollo 13 mission. Twelve men walked on the Moon while mankind discovered a new perspective on planet Earth.

Birth of Christopher Carson.--Perils of the Wilderness.--Necessary Cautions.--Romance of the Forest.--The Far West.--The Encampment.--The Cabin and the Fort.--Kit an Apprentice.--The Alarm.--Destruction of a Trading Band.--The Battle and the Flight.--Sufferings of the Fugitives.--Dreadful Fate of Mr. Schenck.--Features of the Western Wilderness.--The March.

Christopher Carson, whose renown as Kit Carson has reached almost every ear in the country, was born in Madison county, Kentucky, on the 24th of December, 1809. Large portions of Kentucky then consisted of an almost pathless wilderness, with magnificent forests, free from underbrush, alive with game, and with luxuriant meadows along the river banks, inviting the settler's cabin and the plough.

There were then many Indians traversing those wilds. The fearless emigrants, who ventured to rear their huts in such solitudes, found it necessary ever to be prepared for an attack.

But very little reliance could be placed even in the friendly protestations of the vagabond savages, ever prowling about, and almost as devoid of intelligence or conscience, as the wolves which at midnight were heard howling around the settler's door. The family of Mr. Carson occupied a log cabin, which was bullet-proof, with portholes through which their rifles could command every approach. Women and children were alike taught the use of the rifle, that in case of an attack by any blood-thirsty gang, the whole family might resolve itself into a military garrison. Not a tree or stump was left, within musket shot of the house, behind which an Indian could secrete himself.

Product Description

William Desmond's original and creative work in metaphysics is attracting more and more attention from philosophers of religion. Putting Desmond in conversation with John D. Caputo, an important philosopher of religion from the Continental tradition, Christopher Ben Simpson casts new light on Desmond's complex, multifaceted, and nuanced thought. The comparative approach allows Simpson to get at the core of recent debates in the philosophy of religion. He develops a rich understanding of how ethics and religion are informed by metaphysics, and contrasts this approach to the decidedly anti-metaphysical stance in Continental philosophy. Religion, Metaphysics, and the Postmodern presents a systematic analysis of Desmond's thought as it advances work on Caputo's thinking and on the philosophy of religion.

5-0 out of 5 stars An agapeic mind and its idiot wisdom
Truly thought-provoking, discussion stimulating, heady stuff. My brain is still tingling. This book allowed me to probe deeper into my own spiritual life.Realizing the daunting task of becoming agapeic allowed me to expand my rationality, my spirituality, my Christianity, and my vocabulary.

Desmond and Caputo's thoughts on religion, the postmodern, and metaphysics are organized and displayed gracefully. The comparative structure made it easy and obvious to see the stark contrast between D & C.

Though the book is not long, each page has rewarding insight.

Dr. Simpson wrote a book that was well worth the time it took me to read it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Oops
Hey, Amazon, the reading level listed under Product Details is an error. It's a young adult novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine read
I read this as an adult, remembering how much I enjoyed the Tripod Trilogyas a teen. This was a fun read with plausible history woven through outthe story. One of the sequels is "The New Found Land," which Iremember to be good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first part of a most overlooked trilogy...
This is the third of the famous (or infamous depending upon one's disposition) 'young-adult fantasy-trilogies' by J. Christopher, and quite obviously (due to it's current order status), the most overlooked one. This particular novel (alas, I do not remember the names of the other two)takes place in present day (you guessed it!) England, and is indeed, toldin the first person by a young man with a slight inferiority complex. Heand his buddy (genius orphan I believe) hang out and play chess, until theyget slung around in time by a big fireball, and end up in analternate-present-reality, where the Catholic church (via the Roman Empire)still controls those precious hearts and minds, and has stifled the growthof science prodigiously....and so the narrator and his friend try to makethings right. Aren't too successful.Sound familiar? It had betternot...it's at least partially original... and kicks off the trilogy nicely. In the next two books these two lads journey to 'the new world'...thenfinally end up in China (which is, quite naturally, much more sophisticatedthan Europe)...and so on. I hope I haven't ruined the plot too thoroughly, but the ending (as per usual with Christopher) is quite innovative (see:Sword of the Spirits Trilogy). Overall, the trilogy is a great read, excellently written...and enjoyable by both young and old. I would suggestreading the Tripod tril. and the aforementioned Sword of the Spirits tril.just to build up the appreciation level, as it were, before delving intothis one. But, for the Christopher fans out there, this is an absolutemust-have (as are the other two in this series), and spotlights J.C. at hismost imaginative (if a tad farfetched) best.A note in addendum isnecessary here, because as with the other two trilogies, theremay-or-may-not-be deep religious symbolism involved here (i.e. the dangersof worshipping 'falsely', and the nature of 'the true religion'.), but it'sall terribly ambiguous and supplants much of what was said about thissubject by him in the earlier two...so take it with a grain of salt.Regardless of this, younger readers will NOT discern this, and theseimplicatory ideas should only add to the enjoyment of advanced reader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tale about a Wonderful Couple!
Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean look and act the part on ice reminiscent to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers on ice. But off the ice, they lead separate lives and married other people probably wisely. Jayne is married to American sound engineer, Phil Christensen who they met and fell in love on one of the ice tours in 1994. Chris' relationships with French Canadian skater, Isabelle Duchesnay ended in divorce. SHe and her brother were Chris' protege in the 1992 Winter Olympics and only won a disappointing Silver Medal. Jayne is a lot less controversial and likable. Anyway Chris divorced Isabelle and married American skater and US champion ladies' Jill Trenary. They are reportedly living in America with their two children. Torvill and Dean are no longer a skating couple but their legacy is quite unforgettable. When they won their first world ice dance championships conquering the Russians, they were awarded an M.B.E.(Member of the Order of the British Empire). Their coach Betty Callaway received one in 1984 as well. During 1984, they set records and an unforgettable four minutes on the ice dancing to Ravel's Bolero. They should have been elevated to an O.B.E. then but that didn't happen until 1999 after they retired from the sport. While other athletes have become dames and knights, Torvill and Dean returned one more time in 1994 to a disappointing Olympic Bronze medal. 1994 was probably a forgettable year in figure skating for those of us who learned that the beautiful sport is filled with jealousy, rivalry, and ugly hatred that makes the sport look as brutal as any other off the ice. Anyway, Torvill and Dean are not like that. They play by the rules even though between 1992 and 1994, the ice dancing rules became so restrictive from music to moves that it is any wonder that the great era of ice dancing was between 1984 and 1992. Since then, it has been a shadow of it's old glorious self. Of course, Dean and Torvill now coach and lives far apart. They were awarded the OBE way too late. Their legacy will not be forgotten. Jayne is a classy lady and quite forgiving compared to other skaters. It's nice that Dean is creative without losing his masculinity. God bless both Jayne and Chris and their futures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot money, IMF Bank of Thailand bailout
The IMF is like a credit union for countries. Each member makes a deposit of which 25% must be in the form of Gold or hard currency, this is called their quota. A member may receive a loan up too three times their quota amount. In an emergency the IMF could approve loans that exceed the 3X quota amount. The IMF central role is too provide policies and resources that give confidence to its members, make available emergency funds offsetting a financial panic, correct maladjustments in balance of payments between nations, and preventing destruction of national and international stability. IMF credibility is their contrarian's superiority providing advice and mandating policies forcing troubled countries too become more efficient and less corrupt. These governments would maintain their control over capital control. However, IMF can not control the inflow and outflow of foreign money. Fast growing countries like Thailand opened their financial systems to hot money. Hot money characteristics were a temptation that could turn into a panic because the money could be quickly be liquidated as a punishment for underperformance.

In the 90s, emerging markets trend was towards ending capital controls. Banks were acting strangely. Banks were increasing loans, at the same time as, the portfolio investors were retreating and selling out positions. 1992, the US Treasury Bond was below 6%. Investors were tempted by yield chasing seeking double digit yields in Malaysia. Japan was one of the strongest investor. Many of these investors borrowed low cost money from home markets and invested it into higher yield emerging market securities capturing 15 to 23% yields. This sets the stage for disaster in Thailand.

1997, Thailand central bank was armed with $38 billion in reserve dollars. The Thailand central bank believed $38 billion was more money than the speculator would be willing to bet against the baht. But through 1997, speculation increased against the baht as investors borrowed money to sell short on the currency betting that the currency would drop and they could buy back at cheaper levels. The Thailand central bank could defend the baht by raising interest rates increasing bond and bank deposit appeal. The second way to defend the Baht was to enter foreign currency exchanges and pump up the demand for the currency. The Bank of Thailand did a lot of buying because it was obligated to keeping the exchange of one dollar to 25 baht. Buying baht reduced the amount of Baht in circulation in the Thailand economy.

The Bank of Thailand was too clever by engaging in a currency swap. A swap involves a promise by participates too buy or sell a currency for another with a promise to trade the currencies back after a certain amount of time. The Bank of Thailand swap secretly amount to $23 billion. The Bank of Thailand reported that they had plenty of dollars for business. Problem solved! However, when the swap reversed the Thailand bank would be scarce of dollars to make payments on foreign loans come due. Most of the reserve dollars were committed for future transactions. The market continued selling short and the bank could not beat back the speculators. The Bank of Thailand had one more weapon, the Bank of Thailand order all 29 local and foreign banks to stop lending baht to foreigners. The baht would cease to flow outside of Thailand. Then suddenly Thai banks and corporations began selling baht in exchange for dollars to pay back short-term debts coming due. Foreign creditors were demanding immediate repayment of their loans when they came due. The Bank of Thailand could not cover the frantic baht selling and dollar buying, they did not have enough dollars in reserve.

The IMF demanded the Thai government create a budget surplus by increasing the value-added tax from 7 percent to 10 percent. The IMF insisted that Thailand devalue their currency and devaluation made increased exports and cheapened imports for foreign countries. The Thai economy did not need monetary tightening; the GDP dropped 10 percent and growth went to zero. Thailand was experiencing a recession. Unemployment rose to 6 percent. Thailand had banking system structural problems. Bank of Thailand had secretly loan $20 billion to ailing financial institutions attempting to stabilize these banks and prevent runs on deposits. The IMF insisted the Bank of Thailand stop the secret bailouts. IMF smartens up and supported a comprehensive guarantee on deposits and liability of financial institutions. Japan rescued Thailand with a $4 billion loan matching the IMF loan of $4 billion. The complete Thai bailout package totaling $17.2 billion.

3-0 out of 5 stars More politics and culture than economics
This book attempts to show the Thai economy both before and after the "blood baht" of 1997.The book did an adequate commentary on the build up of the social and political structure but did not deliver on the economic side too much.It also gave the consequences of the crash in much the same way.In short the book is good to read if you want to see how the general population lived both before and after crash. If you want an in-depth critical look at the Thai economy and the underlying reasons for the crash as well as the economic ramifications afterwards then this book is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Well Written, Insightful and Comprehensive
This is the most interesting and easily read book I have ever come across dealing with issues of economic and political development. Thai politics and economics are complex and confusing. This book makes sense of theconflicting strains in Thailand and will enable even a novice to makessense of of information from Thai newspapers. Fascinating for anyoneinterested in global economics or Thai culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best "war book" I've read.
beyond the burning lands by John Christopher... I finished it last weekend, and I won't lie, I waited for monday just to check out the next by christopher. I LOVE this series, and I can't wait to finish this one. I personally think its better than the harry potter series, but thats just me. This is serious and darker than Harry Potter, and also embodies what one undergoes in life, no matter what the situation. sadness, lies, anger, hatred are allcharacteristics of a human. Christopher Hooked me on the first book, The Prince In Waiting, and I absolutely loved it. The Structure and dramaticism is incredible and the way he transposes his characters into feelings we can all relate to, And Luke, most of all being a confused man in a changing world.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best of the three
The pacing is odd at times and the book could have done with the last couple of chapters being stretched out somewhat, but in the end this is a fairly satisfying read. The best part, from the point of view of someone who has read most of John Christopher's post-apocalyptic young adult fiction (bizarre genre, no?), is that Christopher *finally* manages to develop some decently written, even believable, female characters. Pity that strength is set to crash and burn in the third volume of the series.

3-0 out of 5 stars VOLCANIC EMOTIONS AND EVENTS
Luke's adventures continue as he learns about the Seers and their scientific discoveries in their underground sanctuary near Stonehenge. Although he realizes that the national religion is pure bunk, Luke wants to use it to further his own ambitions. But he is too young and restless to wait for years until the Seers--who study and recreate ancient Technology on the sly-- are ready.

The hot-headed hero sets off on his own to explore the lands beyond the volcanic barrier to the England of the medieval Future. Seeking the mythical city of Klan Gothlam in the country of the Wilsh, Luke meets a fair princess and a hugesea monster.Again he must evaluate an entirely new lifestyle, but despite the dangers of this journey, Luke must confront the greatest challenge to his Crown Prince status when he returns home. Not on a par with PRINCE IN WAITING: a good story but unevenly paced. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful, exciting, thought-provoking
Love, greed, betrayal, family, gender roles, racial identity--an amazing number of themes intertwine in this terrific story of one young woman's adventure.Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rollicking Fun
This book was a rollicking good time -- great summer read with fantastic, strong female lead. If you liked Ahab's Wife, you'll love this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Farley can and will teach your grandmother to suck historical eggs.
By my troth, this book sucked eggs!As previous reviewers have suggested, it is half dry historical tidbits meant to show of Farley's ability to research, and half trashy bodice-ripping erotica. His attempt at a female voice is laughable--literally, I rolled right off the couch when he suggested that young ladies get their period at the blossoming age of 17.Anne's voice in the novel was so muddled that at one point, I stopped to seriously consider if there were two narrators the entire time and I had simply missed it.Farley took an opportunity to have a passionate, sexy female lead and turned her into some weird boi-obsessed spinster.By the time Mary Read made her appearance halfway through the novel, I was only in it for the steamy girl-on-girl action, which was poor even by literotica standards.

I love Anne Bonny and Mary Read, and I really would've gobbled this book up even if it was bad like Michael Jackson--but it was bad like Anne Rice! You wouldn't believe the stuff he wrote!"A large bead of warm sweat dripped from Read's face into the hollow between my breasts. The perspiration mixed with my own and trickled down my belly, disappearing between my legs."When my friend asked me what was so funny, I couldn't even read it aloud I was laughing so hard.

This man goes way far out of his way to edit out the coolest parts of the Bonny/Read story, instead going for an overall less complicated narrative. The result was pretty much poop. The characters lacked complexity, and he went for the silliest, most salaciously trite plot twists possible.Mary Read is pregnant with Anne Bonny's hallucinogenic baby, while Anne Bonny is pregnant with Jack Rackham's baby, but Jack Rackham is dead and gay?Anne Bonny's fake father wants to kill her so she can be more dead than she would be if she were executed?Poop is a traitor?Nooooo, not Poop!Little Poop seemed like such a nice boy!Whoops, belated spoiler alert!

This book is hilariously bad.If you keep that in mind, it's like reading Plan 9...only with more lesbian pirates.I gave it a rating of two instead of one mostly because it only took me a day to read.If it had robbed me of any more time on this earth, however, I would've banged down the author's door and personally demanded my life back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & interesting read
As a lover of historical fiction, this one fills the bill although in a totally different way than most fictional looks at history.I had never heard of the pirate Anne Bonny or Mary Read, but they did become credible characters in this page-turner.At times I felt like I was reading a history book, at other times it became almost a farce, and at some points a touching almost erotic love story. It truly is a yarn filled with an interesting look at piracy in the Caribbean and at some very unusual lives with some unexpected twists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women Pirates!!!
Anne Bonny, an actual person involved in a 1720 trial of Pirates in Jamaica, was a fascinating character born in Ireland. She is desperate when her father abandons her and her mother, and her mother dies on board a ship sailing for America.
She passes herself off as a young man named Bonn, and finds work on the William, sailing under the command of Calico Jack Rackam, a chaismatic pirate with a price on his head.Bonn is entranced by the sea, the ship's violent crew, and a mysterious swordfighter named Read, who has a secret of his/her own.
When Bonn, Read, and Calico Jack are captured, dark secrets are revealed and the book has a surprise ending.
It seems that no matter who you were before you joined the pirate crew, it no longer was important. You were one of the gang, the team, one for all, and all for one, even when the governor of Jamaica had a price on your head.
This was a hard book to put down, even for a 70 year old grandmother!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sumshine all over
Reviewed by Madison (age 4) and Hailey (age 2) Schlarman and Mom for Reader Views (10/10)

"John Denver's Sunshine On My Shoulders" is adapted from John Denver's well-loved song "Sunshine on my Shoulders," with beautiful and colorful Illustrations to follow along with the timeless lyrics. Here is what my daughters had to say:

Madison:

"The book is happy.I loved it.Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy.Sunshine on the water looks so lovely.Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry.Wait!Eyes come first before water. [starts song all over again] Sunshine always makes me high.I liked the pictures of the little girl. She was on the swing going high! She had pretty flowers."

Hailey:

"I like it.Sunshine, flowers - look at all the ants!There's a birdie!She's swinging by water.There is a bee!She's singing.She's playing like papa (guitar)!She's happy.She's cryin."

Mom:

"John Denver's Sunshine On My Shoulders" was a cute adaption of John Denver's song.My girls really enjoyed reading it with their Papa (grandfather) as well as with me because my father can play the song on his guitar. Both girls enjoyed the book although there is not much to it in regards to words. The book repeats the same lyrics twice with illustrations to go along. The illustrations make this book!It brings the life of the song to the reader and my children really connected to the illustrations. I chose to give this book 3 stars because it is not long and is very simple in regards to the wording. While my children like to read it is not a go to book for them due to the repetition.More often than not my two-year-old will just look at the pictures which were a wonderful part of this book.I felt the book was average, a good book if you would like to teach your children about the simple beauty in nature. It is not good for story telling or imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for little ones!
This is a charming book with lovely illustrations and when viewed along with the John Denver CD it simply has captivated my youngest students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, heart-warming book
I've loved John Denver's song since my young adult years and this book is a beautiful expression of the warmth and joy that shine through the music.Christopher Canyon does an outstanding job with the illustrations! A summer day shared between a child and an adult with love and tenderness, exuberance and happiness--it leaves me with such a satisfying feeling. And since swings and daisies and butterflies are also three of my favorite things...it shouldn't surprise you that this is a book I'll treasure for a long time and hopefully share with grandchildren when they come along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!
This book is a hit with my 2 year old daughters!Although they will ask for some of the "Barefoot" sing-along books first, they also really like this book and CD.They have learned the song and sing it all the time.Great illustrations and of course, with John Denver signing, it is a special find!

5-0 out of 5 stars Even without music, this book is special!
If you think this is just a sing-a-long book, think again! The true beauty of this book is the artwork.Even if there were no words printed inside, the art alone makes this one of themost beautiful picture books for children I've ever seen.I have given it as a gift twice, but when I recently learned I was having my first grandchild I immediately bought one for myself.I love the larger, paper-page version just for its size, but the board book version would be wonderful for a toddler.Even if you never heard of John Denver or never liked his music, the simplicity of the words without being sung make a beautiful poem that any child can learn. In fact, now that I think of it -- I think I'll also order the board book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Sometimes Handy Book
I would like to cast a somewhat dissenting view of this book. It is certainly a good place to start for information on various projects but comes up short on construction techniques. Perhaps an older source, Procedures in Experimental Physics (Lindsay Pubs), is better. Of course, it was written in 1938, so materialscited might be out of date, but the construction techniques aren't bad. I recently decided to build a good sized water tank (40" by 6" by 3") of acrylic and found nothing about construction tips. I was thinking of building something that probably required casting, and found a paltry two pages on the subject.

It would be good to see it updated every 5 years or so. I see the pub date is 1991. Things have changed a bit. It has a very good list of references, but with the advent of the web, it would be good to see some the reference material cite the web.

5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot work in my lab unless you've read this!
This is a _great_ book! I buy a copy of this for every student who starts work for me--which I consider to be a fine investment. Practical, hands-on information is given on a huge variety of skills needed by those working in Physics labs. From glass blowing to vacuum systems, to instruction on attaching BNC connectors, it's all in here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Have never seen a book which was able to pack so much practical information into so few pages, and able to explain complex concepts so simply.

If you have to work with any type of laboratory equipment you would be insane to NOT have this book on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for researchers
This book is an invaluable reference source for anyone whose work requires them to become involved in unfamiliar (physical science related) technologies.Though it would certainly be useful to laboratoryresearchers, it is equally valuable for the scientist or engineer who needsto apply these disciplines. As a physicist involved in design ofcommercial instrumentation, I have often had to become involved in variousdisciplines which were outside of my area of formal training and this bookhas commonly been my point of entry into unfamiliar terrain. This isn'tjust a "how to do it" book, but also provides a solid groundingin the basic theory.Over the years I have used this book as aprimer/refresher for: (a) vacuum technology; (b) light optics; (c)charged-particle optics; and (d)mechanical drawing. In each case, thisbook provided me with the fundamental concepts, equations, and techniquesto become productive, often without access to any other source ofexpertise.Though I do, of course, employ other sources as my knowledgeadvances, I still find myself regularly referring back to this book.

Iknow of no other reference that manages to pack so much useful informationinto so few pages. And yet, it remains easy and enjoyable to read.Partof this may be due to the abundant drawings which have a certain charm oftheir own -- echoing the style of the famous C.S. Stong illustrations inthe "Amateur Scientist" section of Scientific American.

Thisbook is so good that I own two copies: one for my office at work and thesecond for reference at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for all experimental physicists
This book is extremely useful for all people working in a physics lab. It covers a lot of subjects at a level that you cannot find elsewhere, intermediate between a deep "academic" coverage and a simplehandbook. ... Read more

Product Description
Written from a distinctively Pentecostal perspective and In keeping with the ethos and spirituality of the Pentecostal tradition, to which at least 400 million Christians belong, the writers explore how their scholarship might be contextualized within their own local church body and strengthened by the dynamic interaction between the Holy Spirit, the body of Christ, and the Word of God. The series is conceived of as part of the ministry of the body of Christ, for the glory of God. The structure of the commentaries reflects the dialogical way in which the tradition tends to approach the biblical text. Each volume begins with a series of questions designed to identify corporate and individual issues illuminated in the biblical book. An introduction proper then discloses the need, process, purpose, time, and place of composition, and a detailed discussion of the genre and structure of the book forms the basis of organization for the exposition that follows. This commentary on the Johannine Epistles, by a leading Pentecostal scholar and editor of the commentary series, provides a running exposition on the text, extended comments on texts of special significance for Pentecostals, and acknowledges and interacts with major options in interpreting individual passages. It also provides periodic opportunities for reflection upon and personal response to the biblical text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight, Great Commentary
John Christopher Thomas is a professor at the Church of God Theological Seminary in Cleveland, Tennessee. He is not only a great scholar, but a great person as well.I was his student and I know him as Chris.
I have read quite a few commentaries on the Epistles of John, but Chris Thomas for me offered unique insight. He basically sees 1 John as a supplement to the Gospel of John that corrects any misunderstandings that the community had concerning what was said in the Gospel. One thing Thomas does very well is stay consistent with this methodology.Whereas, many commentaries spend much time speculating about the opponents that John takes on as being Gnostics or antinomians, Thomas does not allow these speculations to influence much in his interpretation of the text. The commentary is written in an easy to read format, but is very scholarly at the same time. This commentary series has a reflection and response sections that causes the reader to interact with what he or she has read in the text.
Chris uses a Chiastic structure that looks like this for 1 John
A Prologue: Eternal life1:1-1:4
B Making Him a Liar (Walking) 1:8-2:2
C New Commandment (Love)2:3-2:17
D Antichrists 2:18-2:27
E Confidence(Do Not Sin)2:28-3:10
FLove One Another 3:11-3:17
E1Confidence(Keep the Commands) 3:18-3:23
D1Antichrists 4:1-4:6
C1God's Love and Ours 4:7-5:5
B1Making Him a Liar(Testimony)5:6-5:12
A1Concluding Remarks:Eternal Life 5:13-5:21

Chris shows how the Epistle works into the central message of love one another, and then works back out again.I would recommend this commentary to everyone. It is excellent scholarship with great insight for personal application.Looking forward to his next commentary.

Product Description
Acting Pilot Officer John Freeborn reported to RAF Hornchurch on 29 October, 1938. John was posted from Flying Training School to join the already acclaimed 74 'Tiger' Squadron at eighteen years of age. One of the first people John met when he arrived at the station was Bob Stanford Tuck of 65 squadron. At that time the Squadron was equipped with the Gloster Gauntlet. A Flight's Commander was a well built, handsome South African man called Adolf 'Sailor' Malan. On first meeting Malan, John thought he seemed nice enough and soon learnt that he was a determined leader, a fine flyer and an aggressive fighter pilot. 'He was definitely the best shot there was' John recalls. 'Without question Malan was a brilliant marksman, but I could out fly him and I bloody told him so too.'

John flew many operations with 74 Squadron in Spitfires during the early years of the war and The Battle of Britain; he was awarded the DFC for his efforts.

During a brief respite for 74, John Freeborn was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and on 29 August he was given command of A Flight. In 1941, the first couple of months saw 74 Squadron, now based at Biggin Hill flying across the Channel with 92 and 66 Squadron conducting fighter Sweeps and Circus sorties over the French coast. On 17 February 1941, John Freeborn learnt that he had been awarded a bar to his DFC. At that time he had destroyed twelve enemy aircraft and damaged many more.

In December 1941, John Freeborn's time with 57 OTU came to an end and shortly after, he was posted to the United States of America as a Liaison Officer. Throughout the following years John would serve in 602 Squadron as a Squadron Leader supernumerary, then onto 118 Squadron as Commanding Officer and then finally he became the RAF's youngest Wing Commander, responsible for the 286 Italian Wing stationed at Grottaglie. In 1946John Connell Freeborn DFC and Bar left the Royal Air Force with honor and distinction. ... Read more
