Matter's Influence on Pollock Convincing!
I purchased "Pollock Matters" because of my deep and passionate (Platonic) love affair with Mercedes Matter. She was the most influential and charismatic teacher I have encountered in my artistic career (Drawing class, Pratt Institute, 1962). The book is very well organized. After introducing Herbert Matter's collection of Pollock's small paintings,discovered by Matter's son Alex in 2002, it continues to discuss the interrelationship of Herbert and Mercedes Matter with Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner and the profound influence that Herbert had on Pollock's thinking and work. The authenticity of the 32 Pollock painting from 1946-49, labeled "experimental/works (gift + purchase)" is the subject of this book, and published in conjunction with an exhibition of them in Fall 2007.I found the last part of the book a little dry, as can be seen from the list of chapters: Scientific Examination of the Paint on Nine Matter Paintings; Analyzing Jackson Pollock: Scientific Methods and the Study of the Matter Paintings; What It Says on the Tin: A Preliminary Study of the Set of Paint Cans and the Floor in the Pollock-Krasner Studio; Fingerprinting Jackson Pollock. Within the framework of subject, this scientific analysis is justified, and I do believe that they are authentic, but Herbert Matter's influence on Pollock is truly ground-breaking! ... Read more
